My husband was sent to the Richmond VAMC from the Orlando VA for Y90 radiation treatment for liver cancer last year in August 2024. The Richmond VAMC wanted us to stay here. The first room had mildew on the bathroom walls. They put us in another room and as soon as you opened the door you could smell the mildew. We notified the Social Worker Ms. Graham on the transplant team at the Richmond VAMC of the horrible conditions at the Doorways. We informed her that we didn't stay there. We stayed with my cousin who lives local. My husband was blessed to receive a liver transplant on 09/11/25. Ms. Graham knew we would not stay at the Doorways due to the conditions and our experience in August 2024. I returned to the Doorways on 09/21/25 and took the attached pictures and videos. Nothing has changed except they have taken the chain locks off of the breakfast refrigerator. I am a retired RN and Army veteran and, no immune compromised patient, veteran or their family should be forced to stay in such a substandard and nasty place. I wonder what the Joint Commission of Health or the County Health Department would say about transplant patients, veterans and their families being forced to lodge here with no other options. And also, the Richmond VAMC refusing to reimburse Veteran's for lodging and meals if they choose to stay elsewhere post transplant surgery. This is the situation we are currently faced with for staying elsewhere now that my husband has been discharged from the hospital but, not ready to return to Orlando VA for care. SHAMFUL!

This is such a wonderful facility with an amazing, caring and helpful staff. It's a place for patients and their families to stay during treatment, sort of like a Ronald McDonald House. You need a referral from your doctor then you can simply check in with your photo ID. It's very easy. There is a $30 deposit but if you don't have the money to pay it they will allow you to stay anyway. Even though it costs them about $50 per day for each guest they only ask a fee of $18. As you would expect, if you can't pay they aren't going to kick you out so you will still have a room. Their website says they provide a healing, emotionally supportive environment for those who need to be close to the hospital but not far from the feeling of "home." This is not mere lip service, they take their mission seriously. How can they afford to carry out their mission and maintain the facility? They are supported by grants and donations. They also have occasional fundraisers. The staff is made up of a few paid employees and large staff of volunteers. Various community organizations donate meals and their time to The Doorways. There are several kitchens throughout the facility and guests are able to prepare their own food if they wish. The refrigerators, freezers and cupboards are kept stocked and guests are free to enjoy the contents. In addition to the kitchens there are many small common areas where guests may comfortably entertain visitors. There is a shuttle that runs between the hospital and The Doorways so you don't have to suffer the burden of driving the confusing maze of streets many of which are one way. My cousin recently underwent a serious procedure at the VCU Medical Center. She and her husband live in West Virginia so The Doorways was a real blessing to them which relieved them of the burden of hotel expenses and navigating to and from the hospital. I live in Chesapeake and was able to make the drive to Richmond and have a wonderful visit in a very relaxed and comfortable setting. Other family members were also able to enjoy visits at The Doorways. I am just so thankful for the existence of this amazing organization and the wonderful work they do.

It is opposite of the side that the Lumpkin Slave Jail is located. You can take an underpass to walk freely between the two sites. This was the first designated burial spot for the city's enslaved and free residents of African ancestry, dating back to as late as 1799. This one and a half acres was considered poor quality and had no other use but the cemetery. It was also the site of public hangings. Other names the site has been known as Potter's Field, were Burying-ground for Coloured persons, Grave Yard for Free People of Color" and Grave Yard for For Slaves You will find a memorial obelisk here with a plaque dedicating the cemetery. Their is also a spot with a couple of information placards that look likes a spot that people hold rituals and leave sacrifices/personal effects. The vast majority of the grounds is low cut green space. Additionally, there is a vacant and decrepit building there. I do not know what it was prior, but it looks historical. This is a nice place to visit. I would not consider it a long stop, so I would probably couple it with a visit to the old Lumpkin Slave Jail and other nearby attractions to maximize your time.
