As awesome and safe as SCUBA is in the 21st century, without proper training it is still dangerous. Just attended a 60th Anniversary celebration there and realized I'd never rated them so will correct that now. If you're reading this - you probably fit under one or more of the following: 1) You're considering becoming a diver, 2) You're a diver new to the area; 3) You need to find a local place to service or buy equipment. I think I can recommend them on all these points. I got qualified as a diver there in 2008. They've answered my questions, given me advice. The training has prepared me for events both expected and not, thus enabling me to have fun instead of fear. In short, they've literally kept me alive. They have instructors with varying personalities. I think it's safe to say that all of them have the skills to help you gain certification/improve. However, they all have different personalities. I'd recommend asking about that - perhaps even going as far as interviewing instructors to gauge compatibility. They've arranged purchases and travel, even when I wasn't buying from them. Some items can be bought cheaper through the internet, but we will always need a local shop to provide pool training, fill our tanks and such, so I frequent them to help keep them open. They organize group dive trips to exotic locations at a fair price. During the summer they get small groups to go to local quarries so you can both practice and gain friendships. I met my primary dive buddy in this manner (having a dive buddy allows you to dive more often!). They're not perfect, but they're all about encouraging/enabling you to get out and dive. Personally, I've always wanted to take advantage of this pastime, but never had the time or the funds to go. So, it was nice to find more about it in the nicely laid-out store. I had a horrible experience. I had trouble breathing thru the regulator and during check out at the bottom of the pool I sucked water into my lungs and was choking horribly. I signaled to the dive instructor that I was choking and that I was going up to the surface. He came over and held me down by the shoulders until I was able to breathe air through the regulator. Physically held me down. I thought I was drowning. I probably was. When he let me go I surfaced and left. Then I got a letter from the dive shop offering me expensive private lessons since i "failed" to complete the course. The instructor was a part-time instructor; I think his day job was being a lawyer . read more

Very good instructors here. Their very good with all ages. The staff is very patient with kids. The instructors are very knowledgeable about the actual art of swimming and there very big in technique. I would highly recommend The Dive Shop for beginners and advanced swimmers. read more

Every time i've gone in this place i've had a really horrible experience. They are extremely rude and arrogant and try to communicate that they know everything. They talk down to you like you don't know anything. I'm an experienced diver. I don't know everything. I like having a dive shop that can help me out with my questions. On my last visit, i was trying to rent a tank and use it in their onsite pool. Upon arrival they told me that i would have to have the service records of all my equipment before being allowed in their pool. In my entire diving experience i've never heard of a shop doing this. My friend's other dive shop owner (who confirmed my friends equipment servicing for them over the phone) said he had never in his 30 years heard of such a thing. They claimed it was a liability issue yet didn't even have us sign a waiver to use the pool. It was all very odd and they were extremely rude about it. They quickly got heated when i ask questions about it. My gear is under a year new but that didn't matter. You must have proof of servicing to be able to use their pool. I really think it was a racket to get money for servicing equipment, get me to pay for rental gear, or just establish some sort of sick dominance over the customer. It wouldn't have been so bad if they would have at least been respectful and kind. Its sad because there really aren't many dive shop options in memphis. This one is a very nice facility. But what makes a good dive shop is its people. I can say for certain that i couldn't recommend this place to anybody. They don't strive to serve the customer. read more

We have had an absolutely fantastic experience with The Dive Shop! We are new to scuba,diving, and went thru the whole open water program. Randy Wright, the CFO, Lisa Collins, the Manager, Lee and Sheena, CSRs, and all the staff were professional, knowledgeable, courteous, and dedicated to providing the best experience possible. Ken Harkleroad was the best instructor you could imagine-professional, patient, knowledgeable, and devoted to his students. Great facility, excellent training equipment, and a staff ready, willing and able to adapt to your personal needs. Randy provided us with recommendations for our open water certification dives in Key Largo. The outfit he recommended, Quiesence, was first rate! My daughter is a competitive swimmer and she is always in need of new suits. Someone suggested I might try the Dive shop and so I stopped in. They had a couple of racks of suits and I was happy to find one in her team colors and it was on sale so I wanted to buy it. Since it's a different brand than I usually buy and I wasn't sure on the size I asked if I could return it if it didn't fit. The clerk (a woman) told me I couldn't because it was a federal state OSHA law. Sounds good in theory but I can find no such law, federal or state. Additionally, because my daughter swims competitively we buy swimsuits every few months from all different retailers (online and in store) and not once have we ever had a problem returning a suit as long as the tags are still on it and it has not been used. Clearly the Dive Shop just doesn't want to deal with returns so why not just say it's their store policy? Why throw out a bunch of fancy sounding words about OSHA or state or federal laws that don't exist? Their suits were reasonably priced but I won't be buying them here; I'll go somewhere that has a better return policy and where the store employees don't lie to me. read more
