Great course, great people. Course is structured so that any one regardless of background can learn. I graduated with a background in business and by taking the Dev Masters course was able to quickly learn what I wanted to about data science. While the program offers a lot of office hours to take advantage of most of the work to go beyond simple understanding must be done on your own outside of the classroom. The teachers are very good at explaining the overall concepts and helping with specific problems, but just sitting through the classes will not get you enough experience to really learn the subject. The classes themselves are taught very well and supplemented with a lot of hands on learning experiences. You can even tailor your hands on projects to what you specifically want to learn. I would recommend this course to anyone whose primary goal is to learn how they can leverage data science in their respective field. I completed this course last year in July. The whole experience was good from start to finish. Enrolling was simple and straightforward. They were willing to work with me regarding my payments which is always nice. The classes being on the weekends allowed me to continue my job at the time without overloading my work schedule. The class size being on the small side allowed me plenty of time with the instructors and the ability to have all my questions answered. The best part in my opinion was that if you get lost on a subject or feel like you are being left behind, you can always retake any class whenever you want. Which is at no additional cost to you, it's already included with the price. Even after completing the class I've taken it again to help brush up on some subjects. I started the program with no experience in coding. So I spent the first month doing python and statistics prework and audited classes on Saturdays and Sundays just to get myself familiarized with data science and machine learning concepts. The following month, I started fresh with a new cohort and finished the entire program with a portfolio of 6 projects. Following is roughly what my program, Mastering Applied Data Science, looked like. Each quarter was about 3 to 4 weeks long. First quarter we had classes which are lectures with in-class exercises. In the second quarter, we worked on projects and met once either on a Saturday or Sunday to present our projects. In the third quarter, we had lectures again. The fourth/last quarter was back to hands-on projects. A lot of information is covered in 12 to 16 weeks. Lecture classes are a lot of information with in-class mini assignments and exercises which help in understanding the material better and to get in the habit of typing code. People teaching the class are really knowledgeable and take the time to explain concepts and answer questions. They are really patient with answering questions and if people don't understand a concept they will happily explain the concept again. Because it is hard to digest all the information, a lot of things start to make sense during hands-on project weeks, at least that was my experience. We got datasets with some instructions and the following week, we presented our projects. This project-based learning was helpful for me in two ways. I had to explain my findings and thought process to others and answer any questions they had. This is a big part of Data Science because Data Scientists are expected to present and communicate what they learned from data and how can they address the business problem. Project days are also great because you get to learn from other people and what they did differently. I have learned and mastered a wide range of data science and machine learning skills because of the program, but I will list a few of those skills. Python, data analysis, cleaning, visualization. Regression and classification predictive modeling, train test split, Kfolds, cross-validation, different methods of grid-search, hyper-parameter tuning, sampling (Zia did an amazing job at explaining this concept, its importance, and how to effectively do sampling). Instructors are really helpful, knowledgeable and dedicated to teaching. I remember making office hour/ mentoring appointments with Kate to talk about the projects and she would give me constructive feedback to improve them and push me to do better. First half of the program is manageable and you can get relatively good learning and applying data science concepts. But second half of the program is overwhelming because the program also covers big data (spark), tensor flow, computer vision, recommender system, and natural language processing. These are more of specializations, except for maybe spark to work with big data. So each specialization would need weeks to months to get good at them. But if you don't understand any of these concepts they welcome you to repeat it without charging for it. You will get exposed to a lot of information and they will do their best to explain the concepts and answer any questions you have. You will learn a lot in the program if you invest time in it and take what they cover in the class and practice that outside of class, work on projects and work incredibly hard. read more

** This is a review for the Mastering Applied Data Science course. ** A little bit about me : A couple of solid moons back, I heard about this small buzzword: data science. It was during one of my statistics research-based psychology class, my professor had kind of glossed over the term. But it was different, because in her own special way, my professor told us to keep an eye out for it. I took it a step further, I immediately dived into it. I shifted my next semester's classes to orient towards data science with a couple of more statistics based classes & some programming classes. One semester went by & I realized that maybe this wasn't the right idea to move forward. Some concepts & actual job descriptions that were being thrown around, like deep learning & computer vision, was beyond what my school was capable of to teach me. I knew this is what I wanted to do & even with the right foundation, I believe that we all need a guide on where to go with that foundation. How I found theDevMasters : So I decisively looked up the nearest education alternatives, UCI CSUF UCLA & some other peppered courses in LA. But again, academia. theDevMasters popped up because of their weekly meetups on data science. I attended their Santa Monica one & instantly loved it, mainly because even though the concepts were there, the hands-on was not so much fluff that I was suffering through another academia episode. The approach had the industry viewpoint behind it & this was honestly what I had been looking for but I found it without looking too hard. My experience before the course : Since I am new to Python, I went through the Prework designed for Python beginners. It was well organized, with some challenging exercises that made me really use my other programming concepts before, but I felt very prepared after those couple of sessions of walking through to learn it. My stats was already okay, so I only made suggestions to those portions of the Prework. My experience during the course: Boy did I realize that one: I should have started this sooner & two: man was I both jittery from the excitement from learning extremely new things everyday & tired because that was some hardlong 8 hours each day spent learning those concepts. We went over Pandas, NumPy, Sklearn, Seaborn, Matplotlib, OpenCV, Scipy, other various data science related packages, over & over reiterating that data scientist in the field would do. I have several projects to showcase the hard work I've put into the applied portion as well as various versions to show how much more I could add each time I was taught something new. Some are from Kaggle, others are various other projects brought by the consulting company. The deeper the classes went, the more I realized that if I had kept going to academia, I would have taken more than 6 years with bare minimum mentorship & wasted away to do the same thing. My questions were always answered, my projects suggestions on; building myself up was definitely easier with an amazing team of industry experts to help me. Where I am now: It has been a good solid two months since I finished the course; I have come across a couple of job interviews, each more interesting than the next, & eventually I found myself liking the culture at my current startup company & being their Jr. Data Scientist. When I was hired, I immediately asked what were the reasons why I was hired & they said half of it was my skills that I showed in my project portfolio but it was my attitude & persistence. I am constantly referring theDevMasters & their program to many people who I believe just need a nudge in the right direction. Pros & cons : Data science is no doubt the future, but wherever it is yours, you should at least find out with theDevMasters. No courses out there can give you the most indepth & current industry knowledge base as possible; trust me, I've looked. Plus since they are always updating their course, I am always welcomed to come back to revisit the material & experience the newer concepts to play with without worrying if there will be people who will be in the class with me to explore with. The only con I can think of is that one: it gets hard for people who cannot focus on the bigger picture at the end of the day. No one learns to even out their paycheck; people learn so when it comes time for them to grow, no one else has the right to say that they didn't put the time, $$$, & effort to say they don't deserve better than what they have. Yet the pro for that is in academia, people treat their education that way; those who went through the course with me when I went through it & even those who I have met when I revisited the classes, never had that attitude. Hi, I'm Luis C. July 2017 I attended the 6-week course at a cost of $5800. Part of the reason for choosing thedevmasters was that they offered lifelong learning. They're nice people and they made me feel welcomed and capable. Having little experience with data it was a daunting task for sure but I felt confident because of their warmth and seeming knowledge. The classes were interesting and made me feel excited about the anticipation of being part of this great industry. August 2018 I'm sitting here contemplating a job at McDonald's just so that I can pay all the money borrowed to pay for this waste of time. They didn't teach me anything that wasn't available online for free. Also, all the work done was saved in their student portal which was switched to their own platform that I can't access and all they seem to care about is looking good so that more people sign up for their classes. They have improved their program but not $5600 better. DevMasters is a great course for providing one the foundation they need to break into the field of data science. The course starts by teaching you the fundamentals of programming and Python syntax and ends with introductory classes into the big picture material including, but not limited to, natural language processing, computer vision, and deep learning. While it is not required, if this is your first time programming or you are not very familiar with Python, I would recommend completing the free codeacademy python course beforehand just so the first few days of the course will not completely overwhelm you with brand new material. The teachers are extremely knowledgeable about the subject matter and are very willing to address any questions/concerns you have. After completing this program, I feel I have a solid foundation of the data science principles I need to continue learning and diving deeper into more advanced topics and projects. read more

He then said he would pay YELP to remove the review. This behavior is frightening and NOT good business. DO NOT do business with this company. Today I posted an honest 1 star review of my experience with The Dev Masters on their Facebook page. I finally received some response from The Dev Masters, which seems to have been quickly deleted and removed (I posted them below). I was disheartened to see that rather than speaking with me they decided to remove the ability to see reviews... This is not the kind of behavior that a good company exhibits. This behavior is unacceptable and should not go unnoticed. My original post: I am extremely disappointed with The Dev Masters and the way they presented their Selenium with Java class. The curriculum, class schedule, provided materials, and the instruction were all a total mess. I do believe the instructor was a skilled programmer and a really nice guy, but not a capable teacher for what the class was supposed to cover. The class was intended to run from August 2015 to September 2015, however it was canceled liberally and never even concluded. We have only met on 3 different weekends for a total of 5 in-class sessions of which totaled about 4-5 hours per session. The class was advertised as "60 hrs. classroom instructor based. 20+ hours of hands on coding... online support and no JAVA experience required" I don't want to be in this situation... I have paid 2000 dollars so far for a class without any structure, no substantial course material, and an instructor who is most available during your work day (9-5) and provides less than concrete instruction with almost no direction. I could not, with good conscience, suggest anyone to take a class from The dev Masters. It needs a very serious overhaul or a massive price change. After following all the directions, doing my own independent learning (not required of class), and trying to make sense of the confusing instruction, I am still not up to speed or confident in how to implement this technology. If that wasn't enough, The Dev Masters (Arshad) realized the class was a wreck, seemed sympathetic, and promised me a new class with a new instructor. This class never happened. I was then promised a refund. I have received no refund (7 months later and counting) and I am in a constant battle to get in touch with Arshad. I don't feel confident I'll ever get my refund that I was promised and I'll never get back the time wasted with this company... Please save yourself the trouble and avoid doing business with this company. The Dev Masters response: This is absolute non sense Corbet own us $1500. We gave him payment breakdown. We gave him close to 60-70 hours of training. We gave him 10+ hours of one and one java training. We worked very hard with him. You need opps and java training to learn Selenium. We were kind enough to offer him repeat class and a free boot camp for our other classes. If he is taking social media to bad mouth us. It is his choice. We have in fact offer to help him million time without asking any balance which he owe to us, When you want to learn a technology it is all component your self-learning , instructor and our service fee. After plodding along through various different online programs, I decided that I wanted some in person help, and instruction, and found Dev Masters. I ended up taking the Python Foundation Bootcamp, as well as the Python for Data scientist bootcamps. Both classes were lead by Jamie, and Arshad. While both classes were fast paced, all of the instructors were more than willing to help, and answer any/ all questions I had, and have even helped me out with projects that I was able to use at my actual job after the classes were completed. I'll admit that I definitely have a long way to go before I can actually say that I can program, but the in person help, and trouble shooting is invaluable for someone who is looking to learn programming, and would like some help or debugging. Applied Data Science course - Prior Math, Statistics and programming experience helps. It had been 10 years since graduating with B.S. computer science and I had forgotten many concepts and ideas so some of the material I had to relearn within the period of taking the course. Some concepts I did not understand after asking questions and sought the enormous sea of online learning to understand. Although the lecture notes were not presented prior to class there were books prescribed to students and I didn't think to read them much as I was overly focused on coding projects. I think book chapters should have been assigned or some reading material or lecture notes prior to class so I and other students could have a better grasp during lecture instead of going through class with deer-in-the-headlights look. pros - Being able to present and talk about your projects. Testing your communications skills and reinforce learned concepts by talking about the data science and machine learning. Any immersion in a programming language or subject is a step in the right direction. Get a feel for how people in the data science/machine learning field think and talk. Connect with other students with similar interests. Several projects available to work on to practice and reinforce programming skills. Instructors shared techniques for working with data, cleaning data, setting up the general machine learning algorithms to make predictions - the essence of the course. Introduced Kaggle competitions as a good way to practice, test and and enhance your skills. If you want you can retake a lecture ( I have yet to do so ). cons - No slides or notes are presented prior to lectures which I believe would have helped to prepare before coming in to the lecture. If you're new to the subject and working full time then prepare to work hard. Some students did not finish or present their projects due to frustrations or time. Sometimes, software is setup at the beginning of class and sometimes bugs linger for some time, which can take time away from the core lecture material. Not everyone's bugs can be fixed and may be left to learn vicariously or code on a loaner computer. I was told class was to be at the Irvine office then after payment they switched class to El Segundo and had a much longer commute as planned. Much of the material covered in this course could be seen online for much cheaper and presented in a multitude of methods and styles. Pay for parking at El Segundo or you can like many of us, park in the no-parking area of another business ( fortunately, none of us got towed ). El Segundo office requires key pass so you may be waiting outside before class or during lunch before the instructor can arrive. read more

The instructors also provide materials outside of standard curriculum for students who wish to dig deep into different subset of subject matters. The camp also has a bonding feeling whereas you can keep correspondence with instructors even after graduation.
