I've been a patient at Dental Soca for a few years now and I don't see myself ever leaving. Dr. Paul will be putting in my dentures one day. I honestly have nothing but great things to say. ALL of the front desk staff know my name. They even make their best attempt to remind me of appointments ahead of time (I'm forgetful). Adding in the design of the interior, it feels like you're walking into a familiar home full of friends. I grab a cup of tea and in no time Mona calls be back. Despite how busy her day may be, she always calls be back with a bright smile on her face. It's nice to catch up with her and see how the family is doing. The is also the orchestrater of the appointment. She lets Dr. Paul know when we're ready to get started and in no time he is there. Dr. Paul is like the big brother of dentists. Incredibly intelligent, charismatic, honest and actually cares about you. He motivates me to be a better clinician . Then back up front to schedule my next procedure or cleaning. I've had my teeth cleaned by a few different dental hygienist and they were all fantastic. A thing I'll always remember is the care they took during this pandemic to assure the safety and patients and staff. The government set standards, then the Dental Docs took it up another level. If you are like me, having to go to the dentist used to be a very stressful experience until I found the Dental Doc team. I used to see Dr. McDonald there, and under his care, the stress melted away; the first dentist I truly LOVED. I also loved the dental hygienist I regularly see there- Sheila; she's gentle, helpful and my dental hygiene has really improved with her care. But Dr Mac is probably retiring, and I hadn't seen him since the start of the pandemic, so when I needed crowns, I was apprehensive about a new Dentist, doing my crowns. I didnt need to be. I had to have two crowns placed in quick succession and really had a great experience (!!!) I know you might not believe me, but honestly, I really enjoyed the time in the chair (as much as anyone can enjoy a procedure! Aside from having my jaw open for a few hours, I experienced no real discomfort ) It really was the people that made it great! First, I now have a new favorite dentist: Dr Paul was technically terrific- and sooo gentle; he is funny, chill, and is a great listener. I know that I am in good hands! Otis, the RDA who worked with Dr Paul on my crowns was easy-going, helpful, supportive, and fun! The Dental Docs have been my dentists for 30+ years! Dr. MacDonald is very gentle, attentive and always takes time to ask about the family. He may be getting close to retiring, but I have confidence in the rest of team to take excellent care of me and my teeth as well if he is out of the office. Sheila is the most kind and talented hygienist. I'm not a big fan of getting dental work done (and who is?), but I actually enjoy my visits with Sheila. She has been taking care of my whole family's teeth for many years and is great with young kids. My daughter is a teenager now, but I remember how well Sheila communicated with her when she was very young and talked to her about how important it is to get rid of the "sugar bugs" by always brushing your teeth! Arlene also deserves many kudos. She has cleaned my teeth several times over the last couple of years and she is always friendly and professional. I have been to a few dentists in San Diego and had a fair amount of work done on my teeth over the years. I went to see Dr. Sanger and all I can say is WOW! This dental office is phenomenal! I have never had an exam as thorough, nor have I had the level of care that I received at this office. I strongly and highly recommend Dr. Sanger. His goal is to preserve your teeth, not have to drill for cavities and fillings. Dr. Sanger is young but incredibly respectful. I am delighted I found this group. I've been going here since 2006 and can't say enough good things. Used to see Dr. McDonald, but have also seen the two other doctors there and recently Dr. Luczynski for the past few years. Have had a few crowns done with the 3-D printing machine while I waited (makes for a long visit, but I don't have to have a temporary crown), and one took a few additional visits to adjust. In each case, Dr. Luczynski was clear, compassionate, and professional. Highly recommend. read more

This is a tough review to write as the clinical care from Dr. McDonald and Sheila has been exceptional, truly 5+stars. Dr. McDonald even came in on a holiday weekend to provide an emergency temporary crown when I had a cracked tooth and his manner and cognitive and technical expertise are superb. Sheila has been an exceptional hygienist, both technically and interpersonally. Ebony at the front desk has also been great to work with and Dr. Luczynski, in the passing interactions I've had with him, has also been fantastic. The problem with this practice is that they stopped taking our Delta FEDVIP insurance in the middle of the calendar year when they had promised that they would be taking it for the next year (2020) when we had to make a decision the year prior (2019) as to which company under FEDVIP we should choose. We had to scramble (and are actually still scrambling) to find another dental practice with the same level of expertise and professionalism. It has been personally very disappointing that they seem to have made the corporate decision to disengage with all military and civil service retirees in a town like San Diego where there are so many such patients. When they told us they would no longer be taking _ANY_ of the dozen or so insurances that were/are options under the Military/Federal FEDVIP insurance program we were very disappointed. So 5+ stars for clinical, technical, and interpersonal performance...1/0 stars for NOT providing this service to the large San Diego community of military and civil service retirees who so much need it...and some sort of negative score for pulling the plug on the commitment to continue providing the service until the end of the calendar year when we had no option to change to another FEDVIP insurance for another dentist. read more

I used to like this dentist office. But not anymore. My CIGNA flexible spending account hasn't been working. So when I showed up for my last appointment for my crown they said I would have to leave and reschedule. I had an appointment for my crown again today. I called them and told them the CIGNA card still wasn't working. They told me I had to come in and they would work something out. They made me wait, put a dental bib on me, did another x ray and then looked at me and told me I had to leave because the CIGNA Health savings account card wasn't working. I told them that before coming in. They didn't need to do another x ray. Terrible treatment. Please go somewhere else. read more

So I'm a new patient of the doctor and from the moment I called to say I was going to be late because of traffic they were so nice! I've had a ton of dental work throughout my young life and I have always feared the dentist to the point of not sleeping the night before an appointment. All of that changed today and I'm so grateful. Dr. Paul and his staff are so sweet and true professionals. They all greeted me with smiles and treated me like a person and not just another number and it truly meant a lot to me. I felt like I could relax and trust them with my oral health completely. I have been going here for years. A friend recommended the Dental Docs (after several bad experiences with multiple dentists) and I will be a patient for life! Today I received a crown, and as I was sitting in the chair nervous and uncomfortable....I was overwhelmed by the kindness shown throughout the procedure by EVERYONE. From the many questions I had about insurance and costs (the receptionist--I am sorry I don't remember her name--even told me to call anytime if I still had questions), to the blanket and pillow I was given during the procedure. The doctor even stopped during the procedure and rubbed my jaws which were hurting...who does that?! Multiple people checked on me, the doctor shared a story about himself and chit-chatted with all of us in a way to make me feel comfortable and a part of the "family". Stay away! Dr Paul Luczynski put two porcelain crowns on my front teeth. They significantly yellowed after only 2 years (I take good care of my teeth--brush after every meal, don't drink a lot of coffee or wine). He would not stand by them. Charged me $110 for just a consult where he told me he didn't know what to do, but that they should last 15-30 years. (Obviously they didn't.) He wanted to charge me to either 1) grind the top layer off my crowns and then whiten them (but wouldn't guarantee that doing this wouldn't make them more porous, creating a worse problem), or 2) put in new crowns (at a significant cost to me). So I'm supposed to pay for new crowns every 2 years? No thanks. read more

This review is for the staff only. It must really be hard to find good help these days because there are always different people every time I go. Getting a call back seems to be a challenge after you spend several hundred dollars to pick up your whitening trays-which they are refusing to ship because they said "they are not responsible for anything that happens to them". They called me once, two weeks after they were promised, when I specified I would be out of town. I called the office a few days later when I returned, spoke to someone who took a message- and NOTHING since!!! That was over a week ago! For something they promised in a week, took two and to get a call back pick up will be four weeks in a few days!!! I no longer want them, would rather my money back! My family has gone to this office for nearly 50 years with insurance and as cash pay. We have decided we will no longer patronize due to the poor level of service over the past several years. They will probably go out of business when Dr McDonald retires, he is the only one there worth seeing. Too bad. read more

Dr. Luczynski has been my dentist for a little over a year now, and I am so glad I found him and his wonderful, kind staff. I recently had to come in for a severe toothache after a holiday weekend, and they fit me in right away on the same day I called. When it became clear I needed a root canal, they called around and got me an appointment with an endodontist just down the street for the same day. Now I am on the mend and no longer in pain. Dr Paul is the best! I always feel at ease coming into his office, whether it be for a routine cleaning or a filling. I know I'm in good hands! He has a very calm and friendly vibe, and is very easy to talk to. He is also not extremely aggressive with his treatments, never tries to "oversell" me any procedures or x rays. Last visit was for a bit of a tricky filling... it was honestly so easy being in the chair! He's a master at getting me numbed up without pain, and the entire procedure was not stressful and at all. I found Dr Luczynski's office thru the Anthem Dental finder app. Dr Luczynski's website says he accept Anthem insurance. I gave them my insurance card and their front desk registration person said my plan is accepted. After $5,098 in painstaking dental work over two months, I received a refusal letter from Anthem Blue Cross insurance saying, "You will need to address your concerns with your dentist as to why you were not informed that the doctor was terminating his contract with Anthem prior to services being rendered." This place is amazing! I had an unfortunate tooth extraction which is no picnic. They worked with me in scheduling and truly made me feel like family when it came time for the procedure. A tooth extraction can be an unpleasant experience but not with this great staff. I had some anxiety and the doctor and nurse were so comforting and supporting its crazy. They are down to earth and realize these procedures can be unpleasant. I never thought I would leave such a positive review on a dental visit! But they are truly great! After doing extensive research on dentists in the Uptown San Diego area, I decided to schedule an appointment with Dr. Paul. It has since been 2 years and I couldn't be more happy with the decision I made! The office is on a nice street in Hillcrest and offers off street parking, a luxury in this area these days. The front desk staff is always extremely welcoming and friendly. The waiting area is inviting. Sheila, my Dental Hygienist is just amazing. So nice, great conversation, and always makes me feel comfortable. I had a filling done the last time I was in and Dr. Paul made it quick and painless- very down to earth guy. A very friendly, yet professional dental practice and overall an extremely pleasant experience. From the time I called to make an appointment all the way up until walking out the door, everyone was so helpful and friendly. Julie, the receptionist was so kind and went out of her way to get me the soonest and most convenient appointment possible. She even helped me get my paperwork sorted when I couldn't get it printed out. Probably one of the most amazing things about this office is that they are ON TIME! I couldn't believe that my appointment was at 2pm and at exactly 2:00 I was being called back to go with my hygienist, Emily. Emily was so sweet, did very thorough x-rays and cleaning for me and was able to address all of my questions and concerns so that I could understand. Dr.Paul did an exam after that and eased my dental concerns by helping me to have a better understanding of what was going on and how to prioritize my concerns. I love that Dr.Paul gave me all my options up front and also took the time to give me enough information to make an informed decision without putting his agenda on me. Everyone in the office was just so friendly, professional and just plain good at their jobs. I felt well taken care of and actually really enjoyed my time there. I have to say it's a little odd to think that I am really looking forward to going back to the dentist...but I am. I even made my follow up appointment on my way out which I typically don't do. If you are on the hunt for a dentist this is the place The hygienist I saw today was gentle and talked me through each step of the cleaning I had (it had been a while so it was a doozy.) Dr. Luczynski is everything you want in a dentist...friendly, educated, professional and trustworthy. It was the first time I felt like a dentist wasn't trying to sell me on some crazy procedure. The office is clean and offers great amenities. Free lipbalm and coffee are a plus (which I always pass on after they work so hard to remove the stains from my teeth.)
