I recently went to First Wave dental for a cleaning, and it was my first time there. It was a wonderful experience. The hygienists, dentist, and all the staff were very welcoming, helpful, and kind. They explained everything thoroughly and made me feel very comfortable. I highly recommend this dentist! The only thing is, call in advance bc getting an appointment can be tough. A sign of how great they are. Street parking was easy to find nearby. It also looked like you could park in the garage where the office is, but don't quote me on that (it could be employee parking). read more

Since January 27, 2025... I am grateful for the superior dentistry and heartfelt care from Dr. Nina Bubalo and the First Wave Dental Team. Their professional skills and effective communication make me feel completely at ease. It has been an exceptional experience to have the same standard of care during the seamless transition from Dr. Brown in 2024 to Dr. Bubalo starting in 2025. I've never left a Yelp review before but felt I needed to leave a glowing one for Dr. Brown and his practice. After my long-time dentist retiring and moving around a bunch, it'd been too long since I went to the dentist. I tried another dentist in the San Diego area who I felt not great about; felt like they were upselling me and didn't really care. Dr. Brown was a breath of fresh air! Everyone in the office was kind, attentive, and efficient without rushing (a tough balance to strike). Dr. Brown spent time with me and explained everything, and was thorough and kind and didn't make me feel bad at all for slacking a bit--just told it how it was. The dental hygienist, Cat was amazing too! She was so kind and thorough. My beloved dentist of 16+ years retired after standing down during COVID, and the dentists who have remained/arrived at that office are not in the Delta Dental PPO network, so I called other dental offices in our neighborhood. Jason Brown sounded like a good fit. The initial visit was encouraging: very competent digital xrays, a proficient cleaning (this first one done by the dentist himself, to get acquainted with my mouth), an exam and perio-charting, as well as a quick patch to shore up a problematic bridge. He has become "my dentist," and my wife will have her initial exam next month. This is a smaller office that my previous one, but staffed by gracious and caring people in all positions. One main thing I appreciate is that he takes the time to explain the current state of your teeth and clarifies the proper methods of maintaining proper teeth hygiene. Doc Brown is an extremely talented, affable professional who takes great care of his patients. His informal and easy going demeanor will put you at ease as none of us like to have our chompers scraped, drilled, pulled or otherwise messed with. No Guilt trips about your crappy dental hygene. They seem to make the insurance journey pain free. He makes good use of imaging and computers to show you exactly what terrible things he'll do to keep your food mashers working into old age. His staff is friendly and likeable and the office is tidy and neat. I hadn't been to the dentist since I moved to San Diego a year ago (mostly of fear, since I do have insurance ). I did some research and decided that this was the place that I was going to try. I have very problematic teeth and I always have. They tend to crack/fracture and I have 3 crowns already and I knew that I needed at least 2 more. I was very nervous going in and felt horrible that I had waited over a year to get my teeth cleaned, especially since I know that they need more love than the average teeth. Right away I was welcomed and shown around, we did my x-rays and then I met with Dr. Brown. I wasn't scolded for being a slacker when it comes to taking care of my teeth, instead we created a treatment plan to get me back on track and I couldn't be happier. I have been back twice since my first visit to have a deep clean on my teeth and I must say that I am still a fan, 3 visits in. Thank you for making me so comfortable and welcome! Needed dental exam with x-rays. Did a quick search for downtown dentists without reading any reviews, I called Dr Browns office and got an appointment the same day. As a new patient the paperwork was a simple double sided information sheet and I only waited 5 minutes before I was seen. The receptionist and staff were very friendly and informative. Dr Brown completed a very through exam on my teeth and gums, and took x-rays and pictures. Then he explained to me in detail his examination while showing me the x-rays and pictures he took. He explained to me the current state of my teeth and gums, recommended cleaning options and their priorities, and foreseeable results of delayed treatment. I never felt Dr Brown was rushing, and he was very detailed with his explanations and made sure I understood. I genuinely felt that he cared about his examination and my oral health. I've been going to Dr. Brown's office for a little over a year now and I am quite pleased. My teeth were a wreck at my first appointment but thanks to Dr. Brown they have greatly improved since then. Great dentist, great staff! I have had extensive cosmetic work done and shortly after I moved here, had an issue with a crown/ veneer. They worked me in quickly, examined the painful tooth, took a single X-ray and assured me that the problem wasn't with the crown or veneer. Through some discussion with me, we figured out that it was probably an ill fitting bite guard that was recently made for me. Dr. Brown adjusted the bite guard - and didn't charge me for that - and the pain cleared up right away. I didn't have to wait at all, his appointments ran on time. The office is really convenient for me as I live downtown. If you need parking, Horton Plaza is convenient. I can't say enough about how friendly and warm he and his staff were. read more

Dr. Brown Has been our dentist for almost 15 years. When my eldest was three he fell and his top front teeth disappeared into his gums. Dr. Brown opened up his office on a Sunday to help our son. Fast forward eight years and same son got knocked in the face with a backpack at school and broke off his front tooth. Once again Dr. Brown made himself available to treat my son. I'm sure in another eight years, we will still be coming to Dr. Brown and his amazing staff. Even though they don't market to pediatrics, all five of my children see him. When I was younger Dr Brown was our family dentist. As I got older, my insurance changed. Now having my own insurance, I decided since I hasn't found the perfect dentist, so my mom suggested returning to Dr brown office. Dr Brown is the kind of dentist that actually cares about your smile. I know I haven't treated my teeth with as much love as I should through out the years,but he didn't make me feel bad. And he doesn't make you feel as though he is trying to "up sale" you, or make you feel like your just another "patient". My gob was in quite a state when I arrived in the US, but Dr Brown and his staff put me at my ease, cleaned everything up, and put me on the right track. I needed some quite serious work, and he also phoned through a script when a wisdom tooth went wrong on New Years Eve! When I moved away from San Diego, they told me to tell my new dentist to ask for a copy of my X-rays. I guess that's standard, but it's a good sign. Latest technology (I think), friendly service, convenient location. Shame about the smooth jazz, but you can't have everything. read more

I was very, very pleased with Dr. Brown. He is very patient and I was pleased that he treated me (a chemist) with respect and explained things to me. I admit I get curious about the science and I like to know what is going on. He also seemed fairly conversative and didn't try to sell me a bunch of stuff I didn't need (9 fillings, sealants, etc...) Dr. Brown is wonderful, he took the time to answer all my questions, go over x-rays and take pictures of my teeth (he's got this nifty little device that shoots pics of each tooth inside the mouth from all different angles!). That way if you need dental work you can know exactly why and SEE what he's talking about. He also has a high speed (ultrasonic?) scaler that gets a much better cleaning than just a hand scaler. And what really blew my mind was that Dr. Brown himself did the prophylaxis on my first visit just to get to know my teeth really well. And he gave me an estimate for the dental work I needed without even having to ask! I will definitely be going back to Dr. Brown, he and the staff are very thorough/knowledgeable! The only thing that sucks is parking, they did not validate when I parked in Horton plaza. read more

My wife and I have been going to Dr. Brown's office for over 6 years. He is great with what he does! Very detailed and an absolute perfectionist. Never tries to up-sells but always works to educate us on our dental situation. Gives top notch referrals for procedures he doesn't do (surgeries). Their hygienists are also detailed and do a great job at our 6 month cleanings. We moved a few years ago so the commute to Downtown is quite an inconvenience for us but we just can't find a better substitute so we'll keep going here. The professionalism and expertise of Dr. Brown is worth it all! The nice/clean upgraded office is a bonus. Only reason why it's not a 5 star is because they are closed on Fridays which is a little inconvenient, and the front desk lady is usually a little short when you call.. but that's probably because she's just really busy. Overall- great experience with Dr. Brown and his staff and would highly recommend to anyone looking for a dentist who genuinely cares about his work and his patients. Like a dumbass, I made the huge mistake of avoiding a dentist for seven years. After being unable to withstand the pain in one of my teeth for any longer, I made an appointment with Dr. Brown upon recommendation of several co-workers at my law firm. I am so happy I did. Instead of berating and/or lecturing me over my lack of dental visits in the past, he took multiple x-rays, showed me exactly what was wrong with my teeth, and we mapped out a plan of care in order to get my teeth and mouth back to the healthy shape in which they once were. Dr. Brown is kind, professional, easy-going, and as gentle as possible. He doesn't try to sell you expensive cosmetic procedures, and is instead more worried about the health of your mouth. I went to Dr. Brown recently after seeing the Yelp reviews and he did not disappoint. Great location if you work in downtown - you can just walk over during your lunch break. Dr. Brown was extremely personable. I was just in for a regular checkup by had other specific questions about my teeth and possible future procedures, he seemed extremely knowledgeable regarding all my questions and did not push or hard sell me on any procedures. Noticing Nick M.'s review about cost - I did notice my dental insurance heavily cut their charges before issuing payment after my appointment, but if you have insurance this really isn't your problem so it doesn't effect my review. If you're uninsured I expect they are much more expensive than other dental alternatives. read more
