It's a little hard to find where to park, but you want the street perpendicular to what Google Maps tells you. I wish I had brought my board! It's the only park in Detroit and I found out my AirBnB was right next to it before I left to go back home. I probably wouldn't skate here alone in the evening hours, but it's definitely worth checking out with some friends.

As an area resident, it's great see such a positive addition to this neck of the woods....yes, we often get neglected around here as Corktown, Midtown, and the other kitschy Detroit neighborhoods get all the buzz & attention. But, that's another story. Gaining popularity with Detroit's growing skateboarding scene, Ride It has attracted professional Skateboarders & BMXers, as well as the neighborhood kids. I've seen the youngn's crossing the freeway with their bike & board in hand, eagerly awaiting to visit the skatepark. As recreational facilities close left & right with the city's ongoing financial woes, Ride It has become an oasis for these kids. If you're not from this area & would like to visit this Skatepark know the following: (1.) It's located off of Davison East (at Klinger St) - Yes, it's in the hood! (2.) There's a parking lot directly behind the park. (3.) Open from dawn til dusk.

By the general park area, as I understand it to be, there is a botanical garden and tree library which is still being constructed, but it is gorgeous right now and will only continue to become more awesome. There is a big sliding hill that I don't fully understand, but looks exciting. There's a playground and a pavilion area by which you can BBQ. I believe the main park area closes at 9 or 9:30 pm. Deeper in, there is a fishing lake that has a gorgeous area surrounding it. I came here and just spent some time along the grassy shore, which has swings and a playground (I think) around it. Very serene and quiet; a lovely peaceful place to relax and have a picnic. This lake requires a state park pass, which I have, but there was no one at the booth checking as I rode in...? I did not even see the camping area, as mentioned by Jennifer, but this whole place is awesome. I met the man in charge of planning the main park area, including the botanical garden and such, and he is committed to making it a wonderful place for people to enjoy. Good, noble work that brings a figurative tear to my eye. Come here. It's gorgeous.

Our first family camping trip happened here at Ortonville Recreation Area at their Equestrian…read moreRustic Camp. We went from a Mon-Wed and we were the only people on the campground. There are 25 rustic sites. Some are full sun, some are shaded with trees. We had our pick and stuck to the back area that was shaded with many trees. There are two outhouses (vault toilets) that are kept very clean. There is one water pump (potable and cold!) for the whole campground. Each site has a metal fire ring and a picnic table. There is also a grill that can be used that is next to a shelter full of picnic tables. You need a Michigan Recreation Passport on your vehicle to stay but you can pay for it when you get there if you don't have it already. It's only 10 dollars. Camping is 17 dollars per night. There is no one to collect the money so you fill out an envelope at the Self Pay Station at the entrance of the campground. Basically it's the honor system. The DNR does come by in the morning to collect and they patrol at night briefly just to check on the area. It is an equestrian camp so if you have a horse, you can bring it with you and there are posts to hitch the horse to. There is also a 6 mile trail that you can hike or ride your horse down. Warning: Many piles of horse poop. Easily avoided though and not too stinky. Looks like they keep the grounds pretty clean and tend to shovel the poop to the side of the trails. You can easily drive to Big Fish Lake which is a park that has swimming, picnicking, barbecues and a small swing set. There is also another park close by that is great for kids just down the street on Hadley Rd. from Big Fish Lake. This is a PERFECT campground for those looking for rustic camping who don't want to be bothered with people in RVs or don't need all the hoopla that some campgrounds offer.

There are a couple of climbing structures for the kids. We did a hay ride (it was windy so bundle up if you're going in the colder months) but everyone enjoyed it. Unfortunately, the park had to shut down about 30 minutes after we arrived due to weather, but they handled it wonderfully by giving us a voucher to come back, plus an extra voucher for mini golf. The pricing was very reasonable, especially with all there is to do. We enjoyed the mini golf and loved that they also have a tree climbing course designed for younger children. It's a fantastic place for families, and I really appreciated that the courses are accommodating for people of all ages, shapes, sizes, and skill levels. We can't wait to come back and finish our adventure! Highly recommend!

But most of all the staff was amazingly kind and understanding! Marissa, Ashlyn, Ben, and Emily were all very cool and knowledgeable about the park and how best to complete tough obstacles. They also always checked our gear and made it secure every time we went to the central platform thing. Overall had a great time, would go back again.

There's no greater slice of heaven on Earth than the Paint Creek Trail. I still remember the first…read moretime my boyfriend and I walked down it 4 years ago--it was mid-October and the leaves were turning golden reds and browns. We walked about a mile and a half into downtown Rochester Hills, passing by a police horse, a family of seven deer, and many bikers, runners, and walkers like us along the way. The path was clean, the nature was beautiful, and everyone we passed was just as happy to be enjoying this trail as we were. It's just as magical today as it was then. This trail is, in short, an absolute gem. If there was a list for best casual walking trails near a downtown in the US, this would top it. We've easily put thousands of miles of walking into that trail--which has its unique history of its own as a former railroad line. Through every season, from rain to sun to snow, we've been blessed to watch its beautiful trees and flora evolve throughout the years. The best part, however, is that everyone respects the beauty of it. There are trash cans spread out, but you'll never find a candy wrapper or doggy bag left in a stray bush. Bikers make themselves well heard before safely passing around a group of idle walkers. It's rare to hear runners blaring loud music, and I swear children are visibly calmer when walking through Dinosaur Hill with their parents. I genuinely believe every city in America's overall happiness levels would skyrocket if they had a trail like this. But that's what makes the Paint Creek Trail special--it's uniquely one of a kind in its simplicity and beauty.

My favorite trail here is the Haven Hill Loop via the Blue Trail which clocks in at about 4 and a half miles. It's great year round, but in the spring it is particularly muddy. It can get a little challenging at times here because the park isn't as well kept and well marked as I'm used to at other Michigan state parks and rec areas, but nonetheless, it's a great time! I do find the hike gets a bit monotonous at points because the scenery doesn't change a lot, but then you get onto a boardwalk and it looks SO cool! Love it!

The race itself was well organized and the trail was in very good shape considering that it was raining the entire time. I can't comment on how well it's marked since the race director marks the trail for the course. I can say that it was beautiful and the woods and it would be a fun place for hiking too. Fall in Michigan is gorgeous and is definitely a time I would recommend visiting here. I will for sure be back to run more on these trails.
