Mike's inn is perched on the banks of a rushing creek (and the lawn out back along the creek is pure paradise), and when you stay here, you feel welcome enough to feel like family, without all the social obligations that come with staying with family. Mike is a local legend, everyone knows him. He is the driving force behind the re-opening of the ski resort in Cuchara, and has been in the ski business his whole professional life. He is a gracious, kind host...quiet and reserved, but is happy to chat if you engage him. He's a SUPERB cook (and this is coming from a chef!), and his breakfasts are truly outstanding. The place is supremely dog friendly, with no extra charge for a pet. (A huge savings if you're staying a week.) Yes...this is an older home, converted to an inn. (Each suite has a full kitchen.) This is not The W. Don't come expecting that. We found our suite to be twice the size we expected, supremely comfy, and the price was spot-on for such a wonderful stay with breakfast every day, and an unlimited source of information about the area. Yellow Pine Ranch is where I learned about nature in the 1980s: "Cocklebur" the donkey who lived in the grassy field outside our cabin - he happily ate our hand-fed carrots. Horseback riding with my ol' friend "Taco," the great white horse with brown spots. And hummingbirds that would happily sit on your finger. My Senior Retrievers have traveled to Italy, the Texas Coast, and are possibly more well-behaved than some humans. It saddens my heart that a place nestled in what my Dad called "God's Country" doesn't welcome God's creatures. The management here could benefit from a reality check. So I don't meet their reservation requirements. I'm fine with that. SPECIAL NOTE ~ When I spoke to Diane today she could have *not noticed less* when I told her my family stayed here at Yellow Pines 40 years ago. How sad that is.

We showed up to the resort with no reservations and they had spots available for reasonable prices. Despite having guest wifi, It is pretty remote- so if you need to stop for fresh groceries your last chance is Ringo's. However, There is a store at the resort with drinks, snacks, alcohol, and fishing gear. There are boat and paddle board rentals for activities on the lake. While camping in July, the weather was nice and cool and only ever got close to hot around noon. At night it would get a little chilly but if you have blankets you'd be fine. There was a bear one night that climbed a tree above our campsites, but the park staff made sure to monitor it completely and have supplies on hand. It peacefully went back into the woods the next night. We went swimming in the lake and there were tons of crawfish, they didn't bite of pinch, just swam away backwards or sometimes accidentally walked on your feet lol. Overall it was super great. There is a restaurant at the resort with inside and outside seating. There is a bar indoor with wine, bottled drinks, and supplies/spirits for mixed drinks. We went Sunday night and they happened to have a live concert going outside. My expectations for the food quality were pretty low, and then I got the food and was BEYOND SURPRISED! The chicken sandwich was large and crispy, the fried okra was fresh. And as someone who has never had green chile- my mind was blown! I would definitely plan on eating here again if I was staying at the park/resort.

It was during the week after Labor Day so our host Jeremy was there to take care of things, and gave us some tips about the area & what to see & do. During summer season & on weekends there's a pizza restaurant open on site. Nearby is Bosque Del Oro wildlife preserve, one of the largest Elk herds in the US, Monument lake, North lake, Bear & Blue lakes, and others; trails, streams, 14'er peaks and pretty much anything you want to do outdoors.
