I made the mistake and starting this course out walking it! DO NOT WALK this course if it is your first time on it! The par 72, 7,669 yard course with fewer than 40 bunkers is an enjoyable experience for all who appreciate Colorado Golf. The unique black sand bunkers are a tribute to Trinidad's rich mining heritage. The course is already famous for #16 Intimidation, intimidation, intimidation! This par three is a very short, simple and straightforward, save for the fact there is a tee, a green and NOTHING else in between! Mike was an outstanding host with world class breakfasts each morning, top tier hospitality, and fun conversations. It truly felt as if we were right at home and part of the Cuchara family. Mike's inn is perched on the banks of a rushing creek (and the lawn out back along the creek is pure paradise), and when you stay here, you feel welcome enough to feel like family, without all the social obligations that come with staying with family. Mike is a local legend, everyone knows him. He is the driving force behind the re-opening of the ski resort in Cuchara, and has been in the ski business his whole professional life. He is a gracious, kind host...quiet and reserved, but is happy to chat if you engage him. He's a SUPERB cook (and this is coming from a chef!), and his breakfasts are truly outstanding. The place is supremely dog friendly, with no extra charge for a pet. (A huge savings if you're staying a week.) Yes...this is an older home, converted to an inn. (Each suite has a full kitchen.) This is not The W. Don't come expecting that. We found our suite to be twice the size we expected, supremely comfy, and the price was spot-on for such a wonderful stay with breakfast every day, and an unlimited source of information about the area. We played trivia at the Bavarian restaurant, rode the lift and hiked down, played cornhole and bocce, had a great meal at 192, attended the free yoga class and got great deals (and service!) at Taos Mountain Sports. Unfortunately for us the day we visited it was drizzling all day and had rained earlier so the dunes were wet. Something I really appreciated was that the folks working were super transparent with us and said they weren't sure we'd have much fun trying to sled down when the sand was packed like that with water. Because of that we passed on renting gear, even though that was our initial reason for stopping here. While there we did some shopping, instead picked up some sand toys for the kids, and purchased a sticker. All in all it was a nice little shop and I can't say how much I appreciate them for their kindness and honesty - they could have just taken our money but they gave us good feedback and we will for sure rent from them if and when we make it back this way. Also it's worth noting that they were right. There were folks that had rented sleds and were sledding but it was a slow process for them. With two kids in tow and wet sand to deal with we were happy to not have to lug sleds that we wouldn't have used on our hike.

This place is tucked away with a couple of other hotels and ski-focused businesses. Our room was nice and large, including the bathroom. You were able to see the mountains from our room window. Since it was near the end of the tourist season, there weren't very many people staying there. Additionally, they have a parking garage at the bottom of the building which requires a code to access. They also had a restaurant and bar that we didn't take advantage of since the bar is only opened seasonally. There was a rec room with TV, pool table, foosball table, and piano. My only problem with this hotel was there was no air conditioning. I understand that most of the time a/c is not required given the area but it would have been useful. Having the window open didn't fully cool down the room. There was a box fan in the room, but it was so loud, you wouldn't be able to sleep it with it on. I liked where this place was located as it was near some walking trails. Also the stray dog cantina is right across the street (you can see my review). I will definitely consider staying here again and would recommend it to others.

The staff are accommodating and friendly. The room smells good, decoration is simple and importantly, it's clean. The breakfast is good with a small touch of personal service. They have a staff that plate your hot food and the rest is open to all. Keeps everything tidy and less people touching the food. We stayed again on our way back to Texas and the experience with the staff is still phenomenal. We will surely refer this hotel to our friends if they have to stop somewhere in Colorado.
