There's a dog park at the back of the property and doggie biscuits at the front desk for furry friends. Had we wanted, we could have had a fire at the fire pit next to the dog park, after the office checked to see if it is a burn day, of course. The bathroom is clean, there is a coffee maker and coffee, a microwave and small fridge in the room. Dollar tree and small grocery down the street. A number of eateries as well close by. I think next time we come, we'll stay a few days to explore the rich history of the area and end the day with a fire under the stars!

We rolled in a little before noon and we were able to check in a little early so that we could head off to the Sand Dunes for the afternoon (FYI - you can also rent boogie boards here as well, for the Sand Dunes). This establishment seemed clean, and the staff was very friendly. The only downside I would say, and it is a very minor issue, that is why I still gave this review five stars. The walls are a little thinner than normal, and I could hear the people above us a little more than normal. Other than that, the establishment was clean, well taken care of, and enough parking available for the entire establishment. Plus, you can also rent the boogie board for the Sand Dunes there as well, that saves you the hassle of having to get out of line to rent from the shop at the Sand Dunes (That line can get pretty long to get in, and you wont want to get out of line, after you have been in it for the past 30 minutes - you'll see). If your looking for a convenient location, near the Sand Dunes, this is the ideal place. Like some of the others have posted, support your local businesses. However, if you want to make that trip over to Alamosa, your going to be paying an extra $50-$100+ a night for a name brand hotel. Remember, your just going to sleep there. It was worth us to just make the trip to Alamosa to go have dinner and go back to Fort Garland to the Hotel. There was a microwave, fridge and a ton of TV channels. For breakfast they out out prepackaged Little Debbie style items. There was also coffee available and they had a kettle to boil water, if you want it. The mattress was surprisingly comfortable. It appeared to have a memory foam top. Noise did travel from the room above as they were up and showering at 3 am! I'd recommend asking for an upstairs room. Though, admittedly, I'm the only one out of 4 of us that heard it. Tom made the reservation, and prior to our trip, I called and let them know this trip was for our anniversary. I spoke to Courtney, and he said he could definitely put something together for me! Courtney checked us in. We arrived at around 9:30pm (late start), and he offered to help us out if we were unable to find a place open to get dinner. The location of our room was RIGHT on the river, and the view was absolutely breathtaking. When we walked into the room, waiting on the desk was a bottle of champagne and chocolate covered strawberries from Rocky Mountain Chocolates, with a handwritten note from Courtney and Sydney (the owners), wishing us a Happy Anniversary! This touch really started off our anniversary weekend right. Everything was clean and comfortable, and we got a great night sleep in the comfortable bed. At night, we sat right next to the river around the fire pit. The atmosphere was perfect. We bought the stuff to make s'mores, and the icing on the cake was that they had a tree with a note attached, "Snowman Arms & Marshmallow Sticks". How Cute! Every morning, a free, made to order breakfast was offered. The cook was friendly, and quick. We had Belgian waffles, eggs to order, and bacon! So delicious. (Great coffee, too). On Saturday nights, at the slope within walking distance from the hotel, there is a thing called the Torchlight Parade, which has people skiing down the mountain in a zig-zag procession holding flares. During our stay, the hotel was nearly empty, which made the long second-floor hallway, old doors, creaking floors, and deep silence feel especially dramatic. At one point, I caught the unmistakable scent of rose perfume in the hallway. It appeared for only a second and then vanished completely. The hotel has long been associated with stories of unexplained rose fragrance, and experiencing it firsthand was unforgettable. Later that evening, four frightened college students asked us to investigate noises and a shadow they believed they had seen in their room. We found nothing supernatural, but they were frightened enough to leave the hotel in the middle of the night. Our own qualifications as paranormal investigators were somewhat compromised by martinis. I also searched unsuccessfully for a rumored trap door beneath the carpet and managed a brief look into the hotel's supposedly forbidden room. No ghosts appeared, but I did emerge from the carpet covered in decades of dust. The entire experience was funny, eerie, memorable, and completely unique to the St. James, and I have returned several times. What stays with me most is the feeling of the place. Some hotels provide lodging. The St. James gives you a story.

We had planned this trip for 6 weeks. I have been to 20 plus concerts; this information did not really concern me at all. Concerts last maybe 2-3 hours tops, and end at the latest at 10 pm, and after all this is a historic hotel? We heard the music 100 yards away at 3 pm on our way there, we thought so it started already, and would probably be done by 6 pm. We were very wrong, apparently there were numerous bands one right after the other until 11:45 pm? They were very loud and played for 8.5 hours in the middle of the hotel, in their courtyard nonstop. We are reasonable people, but this was a hotel! If the music would have stopped within a reasonable time frame, even 10 pm, this review would not have posted. Not only that but the restaurant served chicken tenders, tacos, nachos, and hot wings, nothing else? This event was poorly planned, poorly executed, with poorly communicated, with a serious lack of professionalism, and just plain all about the money they could make selling liquor, with no consideration for their patrons. If we were told there would be no real food to eat, and the concert would last until midnight, I would have nothing to complain about. I think we got maybe 5 hours of sleep that night as a group. Shame of the owners and Management of this hotel, hopefully they will start putting their faithful patrons above the chance to make some extra money at their expense.

There's no shortage of Indiana Jones stuff all over the place, from books to action figures to photos to posters. There's plenty of other decor from similar franchises, like Transformers, X-Men, Star Wars, and Aliens, but make no mistake: Indiana Jones is front and center. The rooms are quite cozy, very clean, and accommodating. Individual heating and cooling for each room. Wifi, the usual towels and shampoo & soap, and breakfast all included. The breakfast is terrific, handmade; the owner makes everything from scratch herself, and she even makes her own homemade vanilla if you want to buy it. The staff are down-to-earth, no-nonsense, welcoming, accommodating people. Treat them nice (it'll be easy). Loads of books and movies available. There is a small communal fridge available, and they have some snacks available. DVD players and Disney Plus are available. If you want to bring a blu-ray player and HDMI cable, you could hook it up to the TVs. One suggestion for a traveler (and this is true for any place) would be a night light; the only lights in the bathroom are nice and bright, but they could wake up anybody else still in bed if you use the bathroom in the middle of the night. Shower was great, in spite of being such an old house. Great temperature and water pressure. There are lots of dogs in the neighborhood, so you may hear some barking. Wasn't really a problem for me, but I did hear dogs barking numerous times through the night. Maybe bring ear plugs if you're really concerned. It's worth going to the nearby scenic railroad (Cumbres and Toltec, I think it's called) for a day. It's the same train used in the beginning of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, but it's also a gorgeous and wonderful experience. I'd recommend two nights at least, but you could stay longer if you're into hanging out, reading books, etc. Outside of the railroad, there's not a ton of stuff to do in Antonito unless you feel like driving a pretty good distance. But there's plenty for a nerd to veg out on, and plenty for anybody else to enjoy for a good two days, bare minimum. Many thanks to the innkeeper and her staff for one of the highlights of my life. She has a folder that was given to get with some photos during the production of Last Crusade and news articles from the time. That was really interesting. The house is filled with movie memorabilia. The rooms are comfortable. They all have names, and my party for two rooms. I forget which I had, but it had a queen bed and a balcony. The other room we had was the king. Each room had s private bath. The website is easy to use. You pay on the sure, and during your stay, you'll have to pay the taxes. We paid those in cash, she doesn't retain credit card info. It's a quick walk into town to restaurants.

A few weeks ago, my girlfriend and I tagged a long with my family and stayed at Three Bears for the week. The staff is fantastic, accommodating, and very friendly! My girlfriend and I stayed in an efficiency (#10 I believe) that backed up right to the Copper lift. The efficiency was very cozy and a great place to kick off the boots after a long day of snowboarding. One of the nights we were there, Three Bears had Smores Night and it was AMAZING. I will always stay at Three Bears anytime I am in Red River.

This place is tucked away with a couple of other hotels and ski-focused businesses. Our room was nice and large, including the bathroom. You were able to see the mountains from our room window. Since it was near the end of the tourist season, there weren't very many people staying there. Additionally, they have a parking garage at the bottom of the building which requires a code to access. They also had a restaurant and bar that we didn't take advantage of since the bar is only opened seasonally. There was a rec room with TV, pool table, foosball table, and piano. My only problem with this hotel was there was no air conditioning. I understand that most of the time a/c is not required given the area but it would have been useful. Having the window open didn't fully cool down the room. There was a box fan in the room, but it was so loud, you wouldn't be able to sleep it with it on. I liked where this place was located as it was near some walking trails. Also the stray dog cantina is right across the street (you can see my review). I will definitely consider staying here again and would recommend it to others.
