I silently judge people who intentionally seek out Cubby Bear...unless it's Salsa Sunday. Salsa Sunday is a blast, a free mini lesson beforehand, followed by live salsa music. Dancers vary from stumbling novice (raises hand) to "holy crap" intimidating. People are generally friendly, finding a new dance partner is rarely hard. I can't tell you about their food or their drinks as I only sip water when I dance. And yes, you can have free water. Or you can pay for a bottle. Your choice. Salsa Sunday is the only time that it's appropriate to hold your head high as you walk into Cubby Bear. Take full advantage. read more

How come no one ever gives these 80s cover bands a chance in Chicago? It's so hard to find their shows. You'd think with all our festivals and outdoor parties, you'd see them more often, but no such luck. I ordered a Guinness, which arrived before me in a plastic cup. Apparently Cubby Bear does not trust its customers not to be complete dumbasses, and I can't say I blame them. Of course, I don't actually trust them to be competent publicans. Besides coming to Chicago for their food and culture, we came to see the Yankees play against the Cubs. The boyfriend and I got to the game early so we decided to join the rest of the baseball fans for a drink across the street from the stadium. We made our way to The Cubby Bear, instantly I felt that I was in the Bronx at Billy's Sports Bar. Funny thing was that there were a group of Yankee fans who mentioned the same thing as I did. Both are very similar to an open wide space, baseball and neighborhood décor and the love of baseball fans all around. They have a variety of beers on draft and bottle as well as a full bar. We settled with the Goose Island 312. I wished we had more time to spend there but it was a great vibe and Chicagoan's are one of the best people I've ever met. read more

This place rules after Cubs games.....This place is owned by my Dad's friend George Loukopoulos....He's never ever ever there anymore but his Nephew is there often....My Cousin also does the heating and cooling here.... My girlfriends and I always meet the nicest guys here, it is really fun to come with a group of friends! DURING BASEBALL SEASON: Its a landmark...THE place to go right after the game to continue the drinking, and sing "go cubs go" after the win! It gets VERY busy, as landmarks do...but of course its worth it for a beer or two until moving on, or sticking around! DURING THE OFF-SEASON: Its a BIG bar. They have a lot of musical acts throughout the week,and have a good space for them on the main floor. Great fun for dancing, and drinking it up! Plenty of bars also, so you usually dont have to wait too long to get a drink. There is a Pool Table and a "quieter" bar in the middle upstairs part, and I don't think the up-upstairs is even open. This place is PERFECT!!!!!!!........for me to poop on! The only thing this place has going for itself is its location across the street from the shrine they call Wrigley Field. Its crowded during Cubs games...and they over charge for draft beers during the game. The place reminds me of a sports bar you would find in the burbs. People that aren't from the city flock to this place, because they don't know any better. They could pretty much stick a TGIFs in this location and it would draw the same crowd. Unless you arrive before 9pm be prepared to dole out some cash: a. The closest lot (which is at the Taco Bell next door) will cost you $15. These prices seem to be standard for Chi town, so maybe your jaw won't drop like this out-of-towners did. b. If you're smart, you'll go to www.LaBoriqua.com, sign up for the guest list, and print out your confirmation page then show up before 9pm like a good little salsero/salsera. Otherwise, you'll be stuck paying $10 at the door like me. They did have a live band, though, so in the end I didn't mind supporting the musicians. And another thing of note, they only take cash at the door but will take credit cards at the bar. 2. Be prepared to sweat. On this particularly muggy Memorial Day weekend, the place was jam packed but the AC didn't seem to care. I was a hot mess after my first cha cha cha. 3. The dance floor is a bit of a jungle, and people don't seem to care so much about slot-dancing. I saw a lot of Cuban style (aka swing the lady out in any which direction you want, thereby bumping her into any dancer in close proximity). This means a lot of stepped on toes - especially on a night as crowded as that one. 4. The floor is cement, so I think leather-soled shoes work best, ladies. 5. If you're looking for experienced dancers, they seemed to congregate in the corner to the right of the stage. Luckily for me, they were all willing to accept my invitation to dance with a smile. In accordance with the upcoming season, I'll go ahead and review Cubby Bear. Everyone has been to Cubby Bear and too many times. That pretty much sums up the Cubby Bear. You don't really want to go to Cubby Bear for anything. You just kind of end up there. Pre-game Cubby Bear isn't so bad. You can grab a quick beer or two and it's sane. Post-game is another story. It's just mass insanity. I only usually end up in here post-game well after the game is over and it's died down a bit. Regardless, you really don't want to be in here post-game for more than an hour. Lastly, and this is important, Cubby Bear does contain the crown jewel of Wrigleyville bathrooms. There are plenty of urinals and even stalls for your convenience here. So if you have serious bathroom business to do in Wrigleyville and prefer something more comfortable than a bush, lawn, trough or outhouse, find your way here to conduct it in relative peace. You're welcome. It's 2 1/2 stars, but I'll round up to three for the facilities. read more

I sub for 'bags' and this is their location. Bartenders are friendly. $6 for a plastic cup of New Belgian Fat Tire. Four big TVs playing sports stations...two of the stations were the same. Directly across from Wrigley Field. I don't think I would come here on my own or even suggest to friends that this was a place to go for fun. Beer selection plays a big part. I wish their beer selection was better and that they had better prices. For those in cars, there is a big parking lot just to the west of the building. read more

We did NOT have a good experience here. My boyfriend and I came to Chicago for our first Cubs game from Michigan-and we wandered into the Cubby Bear before a Sunday game. Within five minutes, we had beers, and also, my boyfriend had his cell phone stolen. How? We sat down at a table, along side the bar area in the back-near the kitchen. The waitstaff walks in a small aisle in betw een our row of tables and the tables on the other side of that dining area. A couple had just vacated it, and we cleaned it off ourselves, no big deal... A table up in the bar area, just a step up above from where we were, but out of that foot traffic, opened up so we moved up there. My boyfriend got up to use the restroom. While he was gone, a member of the waitstaff stopped at the table we just vacated, and I actually wondered what he was doing, since we cleaned the table off, figured he was wiping it off, thought nothing else of it, we didn't know the phone was gone at this point...waitstaff guy walks back to the kitchen. Boyfriend returns from the pisser and discovers his cell phone is gone. We both run down to that table, search, and its gone. We immediatley told the staff, and they were helpful, one of the bouncers and our waitress went and told all of the bartenders and other bouncers that he'd lost it. The waitress assured us that it could not have been a staff member that took the phone-because there are "cameras all over this place". And, that "no one there would do that kind of thing". Well, anyone who's ever worked in a camera monitored envrionment knows where the cameras point and where they cannot see. We looked around and only saw two cameras in our area, none we anywhere near the table where we were. She also mentioned "managers watch the tapes." So, then, we asked to speak to a manager, and if they would watch said tape for us? The manager came over and essentially repeated the same schpiel the watiress gave us. Suggested we keep calling later on to see if it was turned in. But would not "watch a tape". Probably because, the cameras are fake-or dont work-or both. Or, she knows they do not record the area we sat in. They didn't even comp us a beer, or anything. We would not return here, period. Nor would I reccommend it to anyone, period. Having the phone stolen was a major buzkill for our first Cubs game, but we still managed to have a good time. Sad that dishonest people ruined a bit of our afternoon! read more

The Cubby Bear is nothing special but you can have a good time if you're with a good group of friends. Don't expect to find a lot of people at this venue who have a sparkling personality though, as its a pretty homogeneous crowd full of insecure d-bags trying to act tough and cool. The staff and management is awful, as illustrated by the following story: I am from out of town and left my ID and Credit Card at The Cubby Bear with an open tab, since we had to rush out to catch the last train out of the city (which comes at 1:15 AM). I immediately realized that I had left my belongings while I was still in the cab and on my way to the train station, so I called the bar and had them close the tab. The receptionist told me that I could come in at anytime the next day as long as it was after 9AM. I woke up early to drive back into the city and got the bar between 11AM and noon. The general manager (Josh) told me that I would have to wait an hour before he could retrieve my belongings. While this was an inconvenience, I agreed and asked if that would really be the best time. He informed me that it would be better for him if I could wait two hours. After waiting around for two hours, I was told by the bouncer that I would have to come back the next day. I told him that, because I am not a resident of Illinois, this was not an option for me. I tracked down the manager upstairs, who wouldn't bother to come down to talk to me, and politely asked him for my belongings that he had promised to retrieve for me. The management and staff were unhelpful, rude, and unprofessional. They failed to deliver on our agreement and I never got my driver's license or debit card back. I went out of my way to be polite and do everything the manager asked me to do, and entire ordeal took up 6 hours of my day on New Year's Day. My advice.... Don't waste your time with this below-average bar. The location is nice, but I'm sure you could have a better time just about anywhere in Chicago. read more

They lied to us about playing the game, had a horrible band start playing in the middle of the game. The food was absolutely gross. Some of the worst bar food ever. The Cubby Bear doesn't do much for me, and it doesn't do much against me. I'm a Sox fan so there is an automatic minimum 1-star deduction due to the deep-seated prejudice that was instilled in me during my developmental years. I'm working on it. For some reason I feel like I've never gotten a "deal" on some drinks up there, so I don't think they have specials or, if they do, maybe they just aren't too special. But I can't complain about the visual talent that can be found there, and the audio talent is usually good as well. However, the live music is typically Maxell-Hi-Fi-sit-in-a-black-leather-chair-and-have-your-long-flowing-manmane-blown-back loud and the party typically on Level 10: Rage. In that sense it's similar to 2nd Floor Barleycorn, so my enjoyment here is limited to very select nights. The back bar is much more relaxed so if I do get dragged here I always hang back there. read more

I've been going to the Cubby Bear on occasion for the several years I've lived in the area. Most times it's during baseball season, but every once in a while my girlfriends and I like to have a cheesy night out in the winter to see bands like Wedding Banned or Sixteen Candles. We had one of these such nights last night when Wedding Banned was playing. We ordered drinks from the front bar by the entrance from a bald male bartender (I wish I knew his name). Everything was fine until I tried to order a second drink from him. The bar was busy and he was running around. That's fine...I don't expect him to drop everything and just serve me. But after waiting patiently for several minutes and trying to get his attention, a girl walks right up next to me at the bar and he immediately asks her what she wants. Now, I felt I needed to intervene and tell the bartender that she just walked up, but I had been waiting several minutes. He turned and said to me with a lot of attitude "Now you'll have to wait even longer." That was completely uncalled for and unprofessional. Needless to say he received no tips from me the rest of the night! I've never had an issue with Cubby Bear in the past, but after being treated that way, I will be happy to take my business to the many other bars in the area! read more

I just can't say I like the Cubby Bear. It's always packed, the crowd is the definition of obnoxious Wrigleyville and the drinks are priced differently depending where you go (side is cheaper, FYI). They don't have any discernible specials, unlike every other bar in the area. They book my favorite cover band a few times a year (go Rock Candy!), but it's the only venue that makes you pay a cover to see them (sure, I love them, but hello, they're still a cover band). I came here to have a beer and get some food on a game day. I had a few beers and then went to the back bar to get some dinner. I asked for a water and they pulled out a bottle of water.. Went on a Friday afternoon before a Cubs game. It was full as we expected, the wait for our food took as long as we prepared for. Prices seemed high, especially for alcohol. All I can suggest is more waitresses. Our waitress ran the wrong credit card then tried to give me the wrong card back. They take your card to run a tab. I recommend coming here after a day game because it's hilarious to see people get wrecked at the bar, make there way to the dance floor, attempt to show off their happenin moves on said dance floor, and stumble outta there in broad daylight in a fashion similar to the club whores I see leaving the clubs in River North and the Gold Coast around 4am. The drinks are okay, nothing special here. I'm sure the service would probably have been better if they weren't so jaded by a drunken clientele that can get quite douchey, but hey, considering what they're dealing with on a regular basis, I give them props for not smacking people and busting heads every five minutes. This place realistically should only be receiving 2-3 stars, but it gets bonus points, which I'll get into. To be perfectly honest, I see almost no difference between Cubby Bear and Sluggers, though the service is a little better and the patrons aren't QUITE as annoying. Bonus points for two things: 1. This is the official Brown's Backer's Bar in Chicago. For those that aren't aware, the official fan club of the Cleveland Browns is the largest organized fan group for any sports team in the world. Cubby Bear does a fantastic job of taking care of us on Sunday afternoons in the fall. 2. Live music. I've seen some pretty cool local bands here from time to time. Oh hey college house parties, where have you been? Drinking here is exactly like being in a fraternity basement. It is loud, there are drunk chicks dancing by themselves and lots of beer. It is dark and there is a big stage for all sorts of debauchery. This place is quite large, and from what I can tell no windows because during the day it felt like midnight. I am in my 20's and I think this scene may be a bit too young for me. Sure this place is a lot of fun, but fun doesn't have to be so expensive. This may just be me being a little too picky with my bars, but I love natural light during the day and being able to hear my friends standing next to me. On top of all of this, they make you pay 3$ for a water bottle! No tap for you! Bogus, but this place gets two stars because against my better judgement, I danced here. Ooops! read more

Came here before a game at Wrigley to grab a drink before heading inside. My experience with ballparks is that everything costs an arm, a leg, a wink and a kiss to get anything (not true here at Wrigley but I didn't know that until after we went in which is a whole another story.) Totally jam packed of booze and food and buzzing with excitement... the bar, not me... okay, me too. It was such an awesome scene to experience a Wrigleyville landmark before heading into the historic Wrigley stadium for the first time. Drinks were pretty reasonable and quickly served. If you don't like getting bumped, stepped on, or a rowdy atmosphere then be warned that on a game day this probably isn't a smart choice but if you were any kind of sports fan then you would know how it can get sometimes and just brush it off and continue the party or just not come out to a bar next to the ballpark. Just saying. *Overall I'm not sure that it would be any fun when there isn't a game going on or some kind of event that would pack the place. We sat at the bar right between the bears game and the broncos. A few minutes later the bartender asked if she could change the broncos game. Um, no. Payton Manning is playing. You watch. I came here on a Friday night for a show--Story of the Year, specifically. We walked in before the opening band had started, and right away I was already annoyed because the bouncer wouldn't speak to me. My boyfriend had our tickets and was right behind me, and I was planning to walk in short of the bouncer and wait for him to hand the tickets over. The bouncer stopped me with his hand, and then he pointed at the person selling tickets. No words, just pointing. We gave them the tickets then came in. The crowd was the typical Wrigleyville crowd, which was expected. They were sort of rude and drunken, which was assumed. However, after a full day of work on a Friday night, I was pretty tired. I rationalized that I could always walk to 5 minutes home, and tried to suck it up and wait for the main act. After about 45 minutes of being pushed around by people wayyyy bigger than I am (I'm only 5'2), I decided that I would forfeit the ticket money and go home. Story of the Year hadn't even come on yet. We tried to go out the front door and the bouncer stopped us, again, wordlessly and pointed to the back. It's amazing that in a civilized society like ours a person thinks it's okay to grunt and point at a paying customer as if it's an accepted method of communication. I could maybe understand if I was a drunk, or rowdy, or causing trouble, but I was completely sober and polite. He didn't even have the decency to speak to me. I've never walked out of a place feeling so disrespected in my whole life. I was already done with Cubby Bear after the miserable time I had just trying to stand up straight (apparently people in Wrigleyville think it's totally fine to push smaller people out of the way or stand right in front of them when they only reach the height of your armpits). That much I expected. However, what totally threw it over the top was that the bouncer was completely unprofessional. I will never go back. read more
