Authentic delicious Italian food with fresh pasta and nicely prepared risotto. Pasta carbonara was made from fresh pasta and looked and tasted amazing. Lamb was juicy and delicious. Risotto was well prepared. The desserts were oddly not very Italian. Tiramisu and cheesecake - a little too English/Americanized. Nevertheless, the entire dinner was superb!

Excellent local beer straight from the barrel, racked up behind the ba, which is full of friendly locals who obviously love their pub. I enjoy good food and am pretty picky, so I can be difficult to please. This place is definitely worth the detour, as they say in the Michelin guide. Good menu with an interesting selection of meat and fish dishes, good standard pub dishes in addition to these, sausage and mash, fish and chips etc at £8.00 (2010), with the more restaurant style main courses at £12- £15 (2010), great deserts at £4.95 and an excellent cheese selection for £6.95. They provide a lovely board of fresh baked white and brown bread with butter and dipping olive oil free of charge. Service is really very good and the wine list although limited is good value and most tastes are catered for with the offer of 175ml or 250ml glassed available for a good number of the wines. Can eat outside or inside. Hope you enjoy it

I got the last space, but I couldn't see if overflow parking was available. The appetisers were very good and beautifully presented. The duck that my friend had looked wonderful. Our main courses were very good. The cod was lovely and the steaks were nice. My steak was a little fatty and I found the gristle very chewy on the end piece. I also like my triple cooked chips a little more crispy, but that's just my taste. The desserts were lovely and again beautifully presented. The ginger cake with chocolate mousse and the ganache plate were particularly good. The table next to us has the beef wellington and I would definitely order that if I went again. It looked phenomenal! Overall a lovely experience.

Had the 3 course lunch menu for £38 (what a steal!). Lamb belly for starter was delicious, well seasoned and put together dish. Mains I tried the pork collar which was very good but the house made black pudding was phenomenal, best I have ever had..inventively spiced, wish I could buy a kilo to take home. Dessert was fig leaf panna cotta, light and flavoursome. Had a coffee with dessert which was also excellent. Its very clear that they try to do everything to the best standard possible. Wish I lived closer.

The Bell & Crown is a historic pub in the little village of Zeals. It has an expansive interior,…read morealthough the walls are painted a very dark colour which makes the main bar area feel a little claustrophobic. (Yes, as another review states, candles in the middle of the day are a feature). Fortunately there is a another eating area which is brighter, and a large covered eating area outside, if atmospheric gloom isn't your thing. The menu is a notch or three above average pub food; my friend had calves' liver with spring greens and mash, and I had a vegetarian sourdough pizza with a side salad of rocker with dressed shallots and grated pecorino cheese. Both were really excellent - my pizza had a deep umami flavour and is one of the best I've eaten. That said, you pay accordingly: the two mains, side salad, with a beer and water, and 12.5% service, came to just shy of £58. Service was very attentive, if rather serious. By the time we left the place was packed with families and couples. So, a good choice for a special meal, but it might be bit too restaurant-priced for some.

On the way back we drove through Zeals. There it was, on the left along the A303. It looked charming like so many English pubs do. We went in and took a long look at the menu. Five minutes later, we were back on the road...with reservations for two at 6:45 pm. There is plenty of outdoor seating but we chose to be indoors. We were met by a very welcoming staff. Everyone was so friendly. Our server, Josh, had seated us by the window in minutes. He was very helpful and attentive throughout our dinner. The wine list was varied. There were several beers on tap. My wife chose the liver, cabbage and mashed potatoes. She loved it. I selected the Roast Duck with kale, mashies, sautéed onions and cavalo nero. I thought it was terrific. The decor was an interesting mix of contemporary art, antique prints and old photographs. We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner in this cozy country Inn.
