A very nice meal here in a beautiful place. It has significant history as well as nice food…read more I delighted in the carpaccio starter, done perfectly. My friend had the scallops to start and we of course, shared. We also had an appetizer of focaccia bread with honey and nuts. It came with an oil and balsamic blend, which I found pedestrian and the bread very dry and crumbly. We both had the chicken as a main and I would say that this is what my mom MUST be talking about when she talks about 'how chicken tasted when I was a little girl' really very flavorful and moist, not lost in seasonings and sauces, as can happen. It is really a 3-1/2 star on the food rating, but it's cultural significance boosts it to a four! Two fun facts: the color Royal Blue was invented here and it was the site of the first murder investigation that had a middle-class investigator questioning a member of the aristocracy.

Fabulous and awesome doesn't even begin to describe it. The Mill at Rode is one of the best…read morepub-diners for miles around and if you're in the area treat yourself to an experience. The clue's in the name - it's a converted mill, the real-deal, with the waterwheel still (sometimes) in operation. It's easy to find in the village, and there is a huge car park. Inside, you can choose from a wide selection of menus, much of it local-grown produce, and the prices are very reasonable considering the quality of the meals. On sunny days you can sit out under an umbrella on the terrace that overlooks the river (really overlooks the river as in right on top of it!). On colder days you can relax in the warmth of the large wooden-beamed dining area - which one? Take your pick! Great for geeks - the place is free wireless so you can chat to your cyber-mates whilst enjoying an unhurried meal and drink with your real-life mates. Got kids? Not a problem as it's officially a family-friendly pub. Scoot them upstairs to the games room where they can play free on supplied X-Box, Gamecube or Playstation. Outside there's a child's play area, plenty of room for them to run about safely. Catering for all, there's wheelchair access to loos and all three floors of the Mill via a lift. There's always events happening, so check out their website for updates. Meal deals include their 797-till 7 offer with two courses for 7.97 (and I can heartily reccomend this). I was taken there for a birthday lunch and have to say it's one of the most enjoyable I've had at a commercial venue. I've not been there in the evening yet - but that's definately on the agenda!

So shoot me, I'm stretching the boundaries of Bristol with this one. On the very outskirts into the…read morecountryside, almost to Bath (the two cities are merging now, don't you know). Certainly worth a trip to if you live in Bristol and have transport (designated driver obv, or you could cycle but only have a few drinks). In fact it is one of the nicest places I've been to in the Bristol/Bath area. So there. The pretty stone building covered in creeper sits in the centre of the tiny village of Kelston, right on the roadside. You know it'll be good, and you're not disappointed. Duck inside the door and you're faced with two bars serving several small but characterful rooms draped with hops and flagstone floors. Beers are as expected - Bath Ales and Ashton Press ciders amongst others. I didn't eat there - but the sizes of the sarnies being brought out from the kitchen sure looked spectacular - we're talking doorstopper of thick cheddar and pickle. Actually, I wish I did eat there and I'm going back.... For summery days there's a secluded back garden, where you can't even hear the main road.

The food is exceptional and they offer starters, main courses, grilled food and 3 course menus. My particular favorite is the Haloumi and pepper skewers and scampi served with mushy peas and chips. Delicious! The rooms are very average, just your ordinary B&B. Located only 3 miles from Bath city centre, I highly recommend you come here!

The highlight however was the lovely food, a compact menu all beautifully cooked and presented with a Spanish flavour. Really excellent and well priced. Located between Frome and Radstock in the heart of the Somerset countryside this little gem of a country pub and restaurant takes some beating. Set in ample gardens in Lower Vobster with plenty of outside seating if the weather is kind to you, the welcome once inside is warm. The real ale on pump when I called in was Butcombe Bitter, a little local treasure from North Somerset and was as bright as a brass button and tasted as good as it looked. The menu is not vast but is varied; the fresh fish board is a highlight. The fish mixed grill offers great value, a selection of king prawns, scallops, with fillets of salmon, bream, and sea bass served with new potatoes and vegetables of the day all for under £20. My companion also plumped for a desert, Sticky Toffee Pudding which was light as feather with a sauce to match, all topped off with a couple of strawberries. The inn also has three quality letting bedrooms for those who may wish to linger a little longer, lunch, dinner, and breakfast maybe! For opening times and directions, see their website, http://www.vobsterinn.co.uk , the trip is definitely worth it!
