Not a scone connoisseur, but so far best scones I've had in the Devon/Cornwall area. They're…read morenothing remarkable to look at, nor very puffed up, but they're a balanced combination of cookie (crisp and crumbly) on the outside while fluffy and crumbly on the inside with a slight sweetness. Their pasties, their specialty, I'm not really a fan of. They're enormously overstuffed, but the crust is tasteless and the filling is mostly potato with less than 20% actual meat. However, filling was balanced in flavor. Guess I just prefer the pastries, because I also preferred their Apple Turnover to the pasties.

Well after two terrible Cornish pasty experiences - one just a few paces from this place (King…read moreArthur's Arms) was singularly dreadful and tasteless - we decided one third and last try. Glad we did!! I had the beef pasty, my wife the lamb and mint. They were big, tasty, juicy and worth our time and money. According to our waitress Pengenna are the only vendor in Tintagel who make their own pasties - according to her the other places just buy them frozen which perhaps explains why they are soooo dreadful. If you don't believe me try one next time you are at Kings Cross station in London - from a little stall you can buy a pasty much much better than our first two in Cornwall Anyway - our pasties were very good, probably 50% bigger than down the road and not much more than 1/2 the price!!!! No comparison!

Fast service: even though there's always a queue, it moves quite quickly. Fair amount of options: if you're not into the hype, there's sandwiches and desserts as well inside. Waaay better than the rubbish, greasy pasties you an buy in train stations in London!! - If you come at lunch you'll have to wait...it seems like this place is pretty famous...we had to queue for about 10 minutes. - I also bought some saffron buns for £1...they were yummy too. *I actually misheard her and wrote myself a note to look out for "Phelp's" ...but I assume that was just my inability to listen properly as I couldn't spot a shop called Phelp's!! ** Later my other Cornish friend told me that "swede" isn't actually swede(!) it refers to a Cornish turnip.

Great little bakery that is a longstanding tradition on the Padstow waterfront strand…read more Traditional Cornish pasties are the big draw, with apparently award-winning pastry and lovely, moist potato and meat filling enriched with a dash of clotted cream. The chicken version also has leeks, while the beef seems to contain a root vegetable, either turnip or Swede, maybe? Regardless, they are both delicious. A friend tried the lamb and mint, reporting lovely flavor, but a bit of chewiness to the sparse meat tidbits, The Chough's treacle tart is very tasty, with bright flashes of lemon zest here and there to lighten the molasses top notes and sugary richness before it becomes overwhelming. The Bakewell tart is also very nice though it uses sliced almonds instead of the more traditional almond paste, which isn't to everyone's taste. Finally, we took some of the scones home to eat with piles of jam and clotted cream, and they proved up to the task, though otherwise unremarkable as scones always are.

And The Chough's pasties are made of the most wonderful fillings and crust, especially the rolled bit that you grab on to whilst eating out the center bit.
