I was out Yelping in town the other day - by which I mean I had to do some chores so I took my…read morecamera with me and took some photos of various shops in the centre, not that I was standing outside the Tesco Metro where the nutters congregate shouting to myself. Anyway, this was all going fairly well and I'd established something of a routine - go to a shop, take a photo, go to the next shop, take another photo - you get the idea. This was all going swimmingly until I got to Smiths. For some reason, after I'd taken a pic, the manager came running out after me and demanded to know what the pic was far. I told her and she insisted that I write down the URL of this site for her to investigate. Out of respect for the privacy of Smiths, I've decided not to upload the pic, though, even without looking at it, I can easily describe it for you instead. It's a Smiths. As for a review of the store. It's a Smiths. I sincerely hope these revelations won't damage this secretive little store too much...

Yes, it's a Smiths, so expect a fairly standardised approach to the printed word, in magazines and…read morenewspapers. However, this place has a special significance for me, as I work for a magazine and it's always with special pride that I trot down to this store to make sure that all the hard work that me and the team put into making it each month wasn't entirely wasted. It's fairly niche, as magazines go, so this is one of the only stockists, and it's on this fact that I recommend this branch, especially now that Borders has been wiped off the face of the earth. Yes, this Smiths has two floors, so it's packed with printed goods. One of the better stores in the chain, for sure.

I needed to get a really simple A4 black and white print done and thought I'd give these guys a go…read moreas they're just across the road. It was a little off the cuff so I didn't have the image with me, so I asked if I could email it to them - no problem, I was told. But it was, for me! Little did I know that I'd be charged for sending them an email! Anyway, I asked them to print off one copy, which they did, but it came out on really thin paper and the ink looked a little blotchy. So I asked for it to be done again on thicker paper. This copy came out really well so I was happy, until the price came; £3.10!!! Now, I know £3.10 in the grand scheme of things isn't a lot of money, but I was charged 30p for sending them an email, 20p for the first piece of paper, 30p for the next and the rest for printing it - ridiculous! Who charges for accepting an email? Sorry Cartridge Right, but never again!

Their name suggests just an ink cartridge provider (which they are, and with a very good range too), but they do more than that. They also repair broken computers, run PC health checks and can upgrade your system for very competitive prices. If you're feeling environmentally conscious, you can also recycle old cartridges here. I really like their attitude to their business too; they went independent around 18 months ago from being a franchise and now run a little Bristol based business in order to keep prices low and customers happy. The staff in the shop are always really helpful, even if they have a lot on their hands.

They have their own 5* range which offers a very cheap alternative to most things, in fact they are very cheap overall. Delivery is quick and free even for just a ream of paper and sometimes you'll be lucky enough to get a free box of chocolates with your order. If you sign up you do unwittingly agree to the regular sales pitch "Did you know we currently have a sale on all our ink cartridges" type thing and to be honest, the sales team seem to get easily confused. I have, more than once, received an incorrect or incomplete order. But they are cheap.

Perhaps it is a world I don't know much about; an industry with which I am not acquainted. The…read moreworld of unlocking mobile phones, regardless, has always confused me. When a phone is locked would one not assume it is the result of a little foul play? True, one may have forgotten their PIN number a few times but this slight and easily avoidable error would have to occur many times to necessitate the opening of an entire shop. In the event, nonetheless, of having locked your phone or needing a new SIM this handy place on Stokes Croft, I am sure, can help out. Admittedly on the one occasion I have gone to this shop looking for a phone the gentleman told me I'd be better going to Tesco where it's cheaper. This, in my opinion, reflects the good man's honesty. This is a business that is very much a service centre. They advertise services that if you want you'll go in for and if you don't you'll just carry on by.

Despite a zero…read morepromotional budget, being a one-man-band, and also subject to the vagaries of the economy, he has survived thus far with his sanity in tact. The last four years have definitely tested him in every conceivable way! I have recently been back in touch with Tony about a cracked iPhone screen. Yes, i broke mine too! I had been quoted silly money to get it fixed; originally a whopping £180, and subsequently £120, and £100. The latter quote is from a great little indie mobile phone shop in Weston-Super-Mare, called Phone Tek Nation, but they don't always have the parts, and I'm still waiting to hear back from them. They said they'd contact me when the new iPhone supplies arrived. This was over a week ago, and they had already been waiting a further week since the order. So either Apple can't produce enough spares for these darned fragile bits of kit, or else I've been lost amid a sea of other iPhone users that have also dropped their phones.... I'm glad I thought to call Unlock It, because guess what? As always, the price I've been quoted beats all the rest by a mile!! He has quoted me £69.00!!! This is Tony's forte! he beats everyone on price and gets the job done. By the way, it was Abri at Tudor Mobile Services that put me onto Phone Tek Nation as he doesn't presently service iPhones, and knew I needed a quick fix. He's also in Weston, in the lovely Tudor Mall, opposite Lloyds TSB, and works with most models of phones, keeping the price extremely competitive.
