If you need a cable to connect your doobry to the thingy-ma-bob, then here's your shop. Stocking pretty much every wire and connector you would ever need, with every combination of male/female bits (snigger) this has saved a few rewiring problems in my house as well as having numerous gadgets to make you feel like a spy... Open ridiculous hours so you don't have to run there in your lunch hour as well, makes this a really handy shop.

I am not technologically-savvy and always feel quite embarrassed when I venture into shops full of technology and technologically-minded people. However, Maplins is different. All the aisles are clearly labelled so you don't have to wander around aimlessly looking like a zombie. I usually buy basics such as headphones, batteries and ink cartridges here. Headphones are cheap from £5.99 and ink cartridges are at least a fiver off usual selling prices. Maplins also sell a great choice of presents. I bought my nephew a remote control car from here, and the staff were happy to advise me on the right car for a nine year old. Maplins have lots of gimmicky toys and gift ideas for men and boys. I particularly love the 'Granny Racing' set - set those grannies loose on the race track and watch them go!

This is a pretty standard Maplins. If you need anything electronic, computer parts, compenents Maplins is the place to go. This is not one of the larger Maplins in Bristol, so they don't carry all lines. As they don't carry the full range of stock, you may have to go to the larger Brislington store, so probably best to check first before making a special trip here. There are always good technical specialists in that store. Maplins is a bit of a geek mecca, not one of the cheapest components store but for day-to-day electronics needs, you can't go wrong.

Bob's Best Electrical

Bob's Best Electrical

Bob's Best Electrical is the kind of shop that makes Gloucester Road really special. I'm not sure…read moreif it is still the case, but when I first moved to Bristol five years ago I heard that Gloucester Road was the longest street of independent businesses in Europe. These days, this long and winding road is occasionally punctuated by small supermarket outlets that could very well have robbed the road of it's unique status. This would be a dismal shame, not least because the local population ardently supports the independent businesses that still form the vast majority on this 3 mile stretch. Bob's Best Electrical is living testament to this fact. It's one of those quirky businesses that stocks an eccentric array of goods with an owner that is deeply knowledgeable, and a character to boot. I have only ever bought light bulbs at Bob's, but have been known to make up excuses to go in, just for the experience. I love that 'stepping back in time' feeling I get when I walk through the door. You get the sense that even the foundations are made out of odd looking spare parts for antiquated machines and gadgetry Bob's Best sell a range of reconditioned second hand cookers and other electrical appliances, as well as servicing your faulty ones. I called by today to see if they had a replacement belt for the spinner in my Hotpoint twin tub, but I got snarled in traffic and arrived too late. (This is one of the problems with Gloucester Road. Being one of the few arterial routes into the city centre it is often heavily congested, so it's always best to leave in plenty of time to get where you're going. Parking is another issue, although around this stretch of road it's often not too bad). It's a little infuriating that I didn't get what I needed, (I have a months worth of washing at home, and there's a strong chance that I'm going to have to resort to some pretty unpopular measures if I'm going to avoid revealing too much skin in the immediate future. Go Fabrese!) They also sell an interesting selection of new goods including toasters, irons, kettles and telephones. I've heard tell that some of the supermarket outlets are run at a loss on Gloucester Road. I find it hard to believe, but a big part of me hopes that it's true. It would be a tremendously sad day if Bob's Best Electrical were to close down.

I'd walked past Ablectrics a few times and it stuck in my mind as the place to go for basic electrical goods. Therefore, that was the first place I went to find a new kettle. I looked in the shop and saw an array of goods all lit up by the bright fairy lights in the window. There were a few kettles (as well as other items) on show and with a varying range of prices. Kettles were from £9.95 to over £60 - showing the window-shopper that there was something for them whatever their budget. I went inside and asked about the cordless £9.95 kettle. The man at the counter was friendly and knew the item straight away. Within seconds I was convinced and bought the kettle - happy that it was not a standard kettle from a larger supermarket or somewhere similar.

(Support local business, I thought - don't go to Argos!) Once you're inside, there is a small corner where you can browse a few of the more expensive electronic items, housed within a glass cabinet, then there's the counter that separates you from the staff and all of the stock. I can see how this is a pretty good idea, as the other guy who happened to be in the shop at the time was completely crazy - I guess electronics stores must attract them. The fellow behind the counter was very friendly and quickly pulled out the correct item for me from the back of the shop. Only £6! Excellent. I left satisfied in the knowledge that I had supported an independent retailer and didn't have to pay an arm and a leg to do so. Good times.

It's a great exchange shop - you can sell off any of your unwanted electrical items, I find that you don't tend to get very much for things like DVDs but at least you get something back in your pocket if your mum starts threatening to take your collection to the charity shop! I've never bought anything more substantial, like a phone or game console, although they do sell them readily, I can't help agreeing with Craig in that much of it could well be taken-from-somebody's-hand rather than actually second-hand but nevertheless this Bristol branch offers a wide range of most things electrical. I particularly like coming here off a morning and spending a good hour rumbling through the stacks - it's always fun to go for an odd ball, something you've never heard of, sometimes it's brilliant and sometimes it's one to trade back to CeX!

It feels shiny and new and you sometimes forget that all the stock was unwanted by someone. I mean I saw an iPad in there today...an iPad!!! Who got bored of it so fast they felt the need to sell it! And why weren't they allowed a refund from Apple, the thing only came out about a week ago!? They have a huge range of electronics in this shop; it's great just to have a browse. They have technical components and computer equipment for the tech guys who might want an upgrade, but they also have a great selection of cameras and laptops. They have a huge amount of computer games and DVDs and you can sell them yours once you've finished with them. I am not sure how good they are with the prices they will give you for them, but at least they are here to give us the option. Some of the stock prices seem a little high, but I am sure some haggling would be allowed.

A couple of weeks later I finally got an answer on what the problem was - I had to phone the shop as they didn't bother to get in contact. The main board had been damaged. I didn't think that this would be a problem - replace it with a new one and work out how much I owed with the £35 taken off. Unfortunately I was told that they couldn't get a replacement part. I asked if it was okay for me to look for a replacement and was told (and here's the kicker), "You can look but you'll never find the part - it's a Bush TV!" I still don't know why you can't get Bush TV parts but they were right - I never found a replacement. Unlucky, maybe and it's not their fault that they didn't have the part but the fact is that the people at the store were perfectly aware that they wouldn't be able to find parts to repair the TV but took my £35 happily enough anyway - free money for them! Not a company I will trust again with my electronic goods as they aren't honest enough to give you an idea if they will be able to fix goods or even get hold of spare parts.
