When I visited as a student - buying something really dull like extension cables and something to do with a modem - I felt like the only bit of colour in an otherwise white, grey and black world. I flounced in and had no idea where to go and what to ask for, and felt immediately ridiculous! I asked the nearest assistant for help, and felt that he, too, probably thought I was ridiculous! They are very, very helpful in here, and luckily very patient when faced with absurd people like me who think it's somehow kooky and endearingly old-fashioned not to have a clue about extension leads! All I know is that I have always managed to get what I need in here, even if I don't entirely understand exactly what I'm buying.

They've got a good range of item categories, with things like car accessories, networking, lighting, sound etc. It's a perfect shop to pick up those annoying extra parts you need for so many electrical things - connection adapters, for example. They've constantly got some kind of deal on the go, which is widely advertised on their large front window looking out onto the road. The staff, who do seem to be new everytime I go in there, are nonetheless very helpful, and always have good knowledge of technology to help you out. Its only let down is the slight feeling they're a jack of all trades and a master of none - their sound section, for example, houses only the most basic kind of microphones and P.As. If you're after quality then you might be better going to a specialist shop for the product required. All in all, though, Maplins is a pretty useful shop to have in this good position on Gloucester Road.

Bob's Best Electrical is the kind of shop that makes Gloucester Road really special. I'm not sure…read moreif it is still the case, but when I first moved to Bristol five years ago I heard that Gloucester Road was the longest street of independent businesses in Europe. These days, this long and winding road is occasionally punctuated by small supermarket outlets that could very well have robbed the road of it's unique status. This would be a dismal shame, not least because the local population ardently supports the independent businesses that still form the vast majority on this 3 mile stretch. Bob's Best Electrical is living testament to this fact. It's one of those quirky businesses that stocks an eccentric array of goods with an owner that is deeply knowledgeable, and a character to boot. I have only ever bought light bulbs at Bob's, but have been known to make up excuses to go in, just for the experience. I love that 'stepping back in time' feeling I get when I walk through the door. You get the sense that even the foundations are made out of odd looking spare parts for antiquated machines and gadgetry Bob's Best sell a range of reconditioned second hand cookers and other electrical appliances, as well as servicing your faulty ones. I called by today to see if they had a replacement belt for the spinner in my Hotpoint twin tub, but I got snarled in traffic and arrived too late. (This is one of the problems with Gloucester Road. Being one of the few arterial routes into the city centre it is often heavily congested, so it's always best to leave in plenty of time to get where you're going. Parking is another issue, although around this stretch of road it's often not too bad). It's a little infuriating that I didn't get what I needed, (I have a months worth of washing at home, and there's a strong chance that I'm going to have to resort to some pretty unpopular measures if I'm going to avoid revealing too much skin in the immediate future. Go Fabrese!) They also sell an interesting selection of new goods including toasters, irons, kettles and telephones. I've heard tell that some of the supermarket outlets are run at a loss on Gloucester Road. I find it hard to believe, but a big part of me hopes that it's true. It would be a tremendously sad day if Bob's Best Electrical were to close down.

Unfortunately for her I didn't want to spend £1000 on a laptop for studying. I ended up paying around £100 of add-ons as opposed to the £200-£250 that she was trying to sell me. The sales assistant then said that I needed a recovery drive (USB) for my laptop. At first I clearly said "No" but the assistant then told me that I would have to set up my laptop with a disc if I declined the service. This was the moment that I gave up and paid for the £35 service even though the knowhow website says that "if the laptop in question is the only one in stock the service should be courtesy" (The recovery media was already on the drive). I now have a fantastic laptop that I paid to much for because of all of the hidden fees. I will buy from John Lewis next time! BTW- My laptop doesn't have a disc drive as it is technically an ultrabook, so how could I have set my laptop up with a disc?!?! To conclude- A store with a great range of products but with staff who have a lack of respect for their customers. HP ENVY 13.

But after seeing an advert on TV for a £69.99 Printer/Scanner/Copier/Fax I couldn't resist. The Cribbs Causeway PC world is possibly the biggest I have ever seen - a massive modern warehouse full of all things electronic. I headed straight for the printer section, only to be told they'd sold out but within minutes as I looked bemusedly at the other printers on offer, they'd had another delivery and the shy geeky sales assistant came over with exactly what I was looking for. It is one of these places where there's one way in and out and you must go through pretty stringent security to get out but if you're lucky they'll carry your goods to your car for you!

I'd walked past Ablectrics a few times and it stuck in my mind as the place to go for basic electrical goods. Therefore, that was the first place I went to find a new kettle. I looked in the shop and saw an array of goods all lit up by the bright fairy lights in the window. There were a few kettles (as well as other items) on show and with a varying range of prices. Kettles were from £9.95 to over £60 - showing the window-shopper that there was something for them whatever their budget. I went inside and asked about the cordless £9.95 kettle. The man at the counter was friendly and knew the item straight away. Within seconds I was convinced and bought the kettle - happy that it was not a standard kettle from a larger supermarket or somewhere similar.

(Support local business, I thought - don't go to Argos!) Once you're inside, there is a small corner where you can browse a few of the more expensive electronic items, housed within a glass cabinet, then there's the counter that separates you from the staff and all of the stock. I can see how this is a pretty good idea, as the other guy who happened to be in the shop at the time was completely crazy - I guess electronics stores must attract them. The fellow behind the counter was very friendly and quickly pulled out the correct item for me from the back of the shop. Only £6! Excellent. I left satisfied in the knowledge that I had supported an independent retailer and didn't have to pay an arm and a leg to do so. Good times.

A couple of weeks later I finally got an answer on what the problem was - I had to phone the shop as they didn't bother to get in contact. The main board had been damaged. I didn't think that this would be a problem - replace it with a new one and work out how much I owed with the £35 taken off. Unfortunately I was told that they couldn't get a replacement part. I asked if it was okay for me to look for a replacement and was told (and here's the kicker), "You can look but you'll never find the part - it's a Bush TV!" I still don't know why you can't get Bush TV parts but they were right - I never found a replacement. Unlucky, maybe and it's not their fault that they didn't have the part but the fact is that the people at the store were perfectly aware that they wouldn't be able to find parts to repair the TV but took my £35 happily enough anyway - free money for them! Not a company I will trust again with my electronic goods as they aren't honest enough to give you an idea if they will be able to fix goods or even get hold of spare parts.

I wanted to leave this review having received an absolutely fantastic service from a number of…read morestaff at the Cribbs Causeway store in Bristol. My particular thanks to Marc, Dale, Russel and Emma in the business department and to Brandt, Steve and Sanjay in store. I probably spent most of the time speaking to James (the Sony Rep) and Jordan when I was desperately trying to figure out the best television to buy. Having spent so much time reading reviews and watching YouTube videos online regarding the best TVs I had finally narrowed my choice down to 2 specific sets; namely the Sony A90J 65" and the LG Gallery G1 77" series. I can honestly say that I have never spent so much time on a purchase than I did over this television - perhaps only when buying a car! I was going back and forth constantly changing my mind. It is in this regard that I wish to express my sincere thanks to all those I spoke to as they really were so patient. Not only that, but also very understanding of how long it was taking me. I often laughing at myself with them for over analysing it too much! They were great though. In terms of my choice (maybe helpful for others) the 2 televisions were both top tier sets but the Gallery G1 was the larger size and I loved the way it hung on the wall. The Sony A90J seemed to offer the better picture quality, better sound quality and better overall experience such as the brilliant backlit remote control and a fantastic and easy operating system based on Google. However, I was hoping for the best of both worlds as the flush slim look of the Gallery G1 on the wall is just fantastic. Alas, it couldn't be and I had to choose one over the other. I chose the Sony A90J and will pair it with the Sony HT-A9 surround sound speaker system going forward. This is currently out of stock due to the pandemic but hopefully available again for purchase in a few months time. I couldn't be happier with my decision and am having the Sony A90J professionally wall mounted. Buying a new tv and home cinema system if you will was a big decision for me, hence why it took so long. Aesthetics are equally important to me and I love that the Sony has a small dim light that blinks only when you use the remote buttons; it's very subtle and nicely implemented. It doesn't have a huge IR sensor sticking out of the bottom of it like the Gallery G1 does. I knew that would constantly distract me when watching television. The Sony is beautifully styled, minimalistic and it seems to me that everything has been thought about during the design stage. The backlit remote control is incredibly practical and I now feel I couldn't do without it in the future. It's also really lovely to use. In terms of picture quality; well it is simply outstanding. If you mainly stream content from the likes of Netflix, Disney, Prime Video and other similar services then you are going to be blown away in my opinion. Other services and older content are still very good and well upscale for the 65" screen size but since I rarely watch older content its not really that important to me. For what I do want to watch, the Sony A90J is the best TV to date in my opinion. For reference, I came from a Bang & Olufsen BeoVision 11-46" (older LCD/LED from 2012) and I could now never go back to such technology. OLED is without question the way to go for perfect pictures and great viewing. I find Sony's current offerings with the soon to be available HT-A9 sound system so much better and simpler than anything available from B&O or anyone else at this time. Based on this customer experience with Curry's I honestly cannot recommend them highly enough. Prior to this visit and eventual purchases (Sony A90J, Sony Blu-ray player and soon HT-A9) I was a loyal customer of John Lewis, but I had received a very bad and uncomfortable customer experience in the days before from one of the managers, which is why I looked elsewhere. I am now a firm and loyal Curry's customer since John Lewis have lost their appeal due to my customer experience being a lot worse than they used to be. I have heard many people say the same thing so well done Curry's for stepping up (massively) and offering the same and in my opinion better customer service than your competitors. Well deserved. All the best, Simon Payne, Bristol.
