Rand is friendly, informative, called with updates regularly, quoted me a decent price and then DISCOUNTED the price when it was time to pick up (big sigh- every penny saved right now helps). I was encouraged to text after I picked up and brought home the computer if I had questions, quandaries, concerns. Of course I did- I'm "that person"- and Rand helped guide me every step of the way. He keeps his words simple and direct, no fluff and certainly no attitude. He's the type to explain something in layman's terms w/o making you feel like an idiot (which I do. Often. Especially around computers). And now my computer works as it was intended. Honestly I'd go back to him.... Beware of The Computer Place on Ashton Road. We took in a new MacBook to have the contents from the old MacBook transferred over to the new one and to have the settings of the old MacBook put back to the original settings. We were quoted a price of "under $100". When we picked up the MacBooks the old machine was not set back to the original settings, all of the files and applications were not transferred over to the new computer, and we were charged $350. The owner then admitted that he really wasn't all that familiar with Apple products. When we refused to pay 3.5 times the original quote he started shouting at us and became hostile. read more

Brought in computer that had a problem with petitions, Talked to Rand he said he would put in Solid State drive ( Although it already had one) I asked him to fix USB drive affixed to front. We worked out a "Deal" because I brought in two older laptops and a 5 year old PC that he could use for parts. He said he make all the changes and since I asked for a word processing program, he would load Microsoft word for the " Extremely inexpensive price of $400" but with "Word" it would be $460! Since it was such a phenomenal deal I would have to pay in CASH! He called me twice to remind him which computer was mine and I ran a breakdown of services requested. Upon picking it up he forgot to replace the USB port, also forgot to install WORD! He would install word for an additional $80 if I wanted. I don't know if he's just very stoned or stupid, but now I realize why there were no other customers and the competitor had a three week wait!! I could have bought a whole new Intel I9 for $700!! Unprofessional and Unacceptable Experience I brought my laptop to The Computer Place, which is owned and operated by one man, Rand, for a simple fan replacement. I was quoted $150. A week later, I got a text saying the repair would now cost $400. I declined and said I'd take it elsewhere, at which point Rand offered to do it for $200 and told me I should be grateful for the "discount." Another week passed, and I was told that parts inside the laptop were "breaking off." When I asked for more details, I was met with complete silence for days. Eventually, when Rand did respond, he was rude, insulting, and unprofessional--I have screenshots of these messages. To top it off, I was told that my laptop, which originally just needed a fan replacement, no longer powered on. Then I was told I needed to pay $160 just to get my now broken laptop back. It ended up taking nearly two months to receive it. The behavior, delays, unexpected charges, and ultimately returning a non-working computer is absolutely unacceptable. ***Highly recommended*** I was visiting from California when I dropped my laptop. Even though I saw negative reviews, they were close ...So I took my laptop there and was surprised to be greeted by a very friendly and informative person. He even texted me updates the same day and quoted me a reasonable price range for the repair and had it finished in just a few days. The repair was perfect (hinge repair and new hard drive) . Laptop runs great and hinge is like new. He was very helpful and said to call anytime if I have any issues at all and he will take care of it. What more could I ask for? He will scam you. Do not go there he up-charges every part. He will not put parts in and then STILL charge you for them. He Will install software you specifically tell him not to... including a root kit, and key-logger. If you care about your privacy and wallet you will not go here. This was the worst experience of my life. It would've been cheaper and faster to break all my computer parts buy new ones and then break those AND THEN BUILD A NEW COMPUTER. Still would've been cheaper. I IMPLORE you avoid this horrible business at all costs if you can help it. I signed 2 yearly maintenance contracts w them to service my computers. The contract clearly states they will maintain my desktop and my laptop. When I sent them an email stating they were late again on preforming my maintenance and have never performed maintenance on my laptop I had to wait 2 weeks for a response followed by a bunch of bull crap all of what boils down to he was keeping my money. One of his reasons for the confusion was that he was new at writing contracts and couldn't see what it said when it printed out! Wow. I'm considering taking him to small claims court so he hopefully learns he can't write a contract, and not honor it. Trust is broken and Rand is not allowed to finish our contract, I will not ask for that portion in small claims court. We expect a business to work in good faith and hopefully have some professional guide lines under which they practice. You won't find that here. read more

I"m leaving this review on Yelp because Yelp only puts negative reviews up for businesses who do not pay for advertising with them. In other words, If a business only wants a free yelp ad, Yelp won't publish their positive reviews. Let me preface this by stating that I took my business to The Computer Place initially because of the reviews and history of bad service from another local repair shop. "Hind site is 20/20" because now looking back, the good reviews seem fake and around the same dates as one another. I purchased a replacement cover and hinge cover for my laptop and brought it with me. I was initially advised by Rand Burkey that he would be able to replace it for $50 in a couple of hours. What would be a couple of hours turned to an all day affair and was advised that it would not be ready until the next day and that the price had increased to $90 due to difficulties that he was having replacing the part. Not to mention he kept trying to sell me a hard drive that I didn't need or ask for. The next day came and he was still unable to replace the piece, however promised to do so. He then calls to tell me he is unable to fix it and blames it being the wrong part, I would have to come and pick up my laptop and he would still charge me $90 for something he could not do, though he promised he could. Upon arriving to pick up my laptop, it was noted that he altered the facing to the screen to attempt to get the part to stay. Not to mention glue residue was noted to the new cover and hinges from him trying to glue the piece on. He kept blaming it on being the wrong piece. He went on about having to rewire the camera and all into the cover and he had never encountered such a difficult issue. He even stated "this is why I sell Dell". He also kept asking if I brought cash. Seems like all he cared about. Prior to paying I asked him to let me be sure the computer turns on. What do you know? It did not. He had to take it apart in front of me and fix it. Upon paying and giving the laptop to my spouse, he noticed the teeth on the replacement part had also been broken off from Rand attempting to get the hinge cover to attach. My husband went up to him as he was immediately trying to exit the shop to question him and he gave some excuse of the teeth not being necessary. He then dismissed him and stated he had a family emergency and would call me. He did call and text me and stated he would rectify the situation. The next day I informed him, after him texting me trying to still see about fixing what he already could not. I told him I just wanted to be reimbursed for the part that he broke. No answer. I then attempted to get on my computer and upon testing the camera, it did not work. I immediately headed back to The Computer Place and he was not there. I texted, no answer. I called three times and went directly to voicemail. I had my husband call and he immediately picks up. He then tells him he'll be at his shop in 15. After approx 30 min of waiting he then shows up. He denied avoiding my phone calls or texts. He blamed it on T-mobile's cell towers. I then tell him the problem with the camera not working and he tells me I have to drop it off and wait for it. I told him that it needed to be fixed right then and there as he was the last person to mess with the camera. I also mentioned the broken part that he should compensate me for. He never offered a refund or anything other than trying to continue to fix it. At this point he has proven to be incompetent and untrustworthy. I advised him that if he did not rectify his shortcomings at that moment, I would have to take him to small claims court. I felt it not right to have to wait even longer for an issue he created. He refused to fix it then and there so now I must resort to other measures. I've never encountered such poor business practices. I had been nothing but patient with this person, however my patience has been abused. Poor business and work ethic. Take your business elsewhere. read more
