I have visited the Compton Swan/Foinavon with friends for the past two summers. Each time, my friends advised me as to what they thought I'd like on the menu, I ate those things, and I really enjoyed them. The atmosphere is great - a beautiful older building that is child- and dog-friendly, with different kinds of seating areas - long pub table, more formal 4-tops, and a super-cozy armchair region. I am given to understand that many of those things are totally normal for the UK, but being from America, I was thrilled at how sweet it was. It's so charming in there that Martha Stewart could try and try, but would never make from scratch anything that lovely.
The meal I had was also great, as recommended by my friends. It involved some excellent French sausages with a pleasant herbal content with delicious mashed potatoes. The sausages did not contain any bread filler, which I don't like, and they were non-greasy. Really top-notch and not available at home! There was also enough selection of beers and ciders on tap that everyone could find something that went with their meal.
Across the street is a super-cool brick and stone fence made with some of the local black and white spherical geode-like rocks that are all over the area in buildings (especially churches and other special buildings) and fences. This or any similar fence or building is really interesting and not to be missed for out-of-towners. Unless you don't like rocks, in which case, have another beer. read more
