The ambiance was exactly what you'd expect in a quiet inn in the countryside. Exposed beams and stone, a big hearth fireplace, clean tables, floors, bar area and restrooms. The service was attentive, but not overly so. I ordered quickly and the food was well timed. I had the fish and chips, which honestly had a bit too much batter for my taste, but the batter was so good, that didn't matter at all. The chips were perfect, and the peas were the perfect compliment. It is clear this is a local gathering spot. By the time I had finished, the bar area had filled with locals catching up and having a good time with each other. If you're touring the Cotswold's and in need of a perfect pub lunch, this place is it. Don't bother with trying to park or navigate the scaffolding of Chipping Norton. Head to the Chequers. Luckily, I caught two sunny days! The patio is large and tiered, with the lowest level right on the water, offering a great view from every spot. The staff were friendly, and the beer selection was solid. I had the fish and chips along with a Caesar salad, both of which I enjoyed. If I lived in Oxford, I'd be at this pub every sunny day. I really enjoyed my time here!

They have all the beers, wine, and cocktails you'd hope for, plus a food menu we didn't dive into. When we visited, the outdoor seating was open for wherever you wanted to sit, but I've read that during busier tourist seasons you have to reserve tables if you want to be near the water. Keep that in mind depending on when you're visiting. Either way, it's a large pub with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, so you'll be happy wherever you end up.

Thanks to its central location and tons of history, it seems like this pub has suffered at the hands of tourists like myself in recent years. The interior is smaller than other pubs I visited, but could be downright cozy if it weren't for the people coming in, looking around, and then leaving after taking a photo or two. (Maybe I just caught a tour bus day) They have 8-10 beers on tap, offer wine, and was told that the fish & chips are tip top, though we just had a few pints on our visit. Service at the bar was friendly and prompt, and we snagged one of the few tables available to sit and people watch. Overall White Horse is a fine small pub and well worth a visit if you love historic buildings/businesses. You can be the judge of the rest.

We ordered the pea and mint soup and mushroom pate as starters and all four of us gave them five stars. We all ordered the fish of the day which became a traditional fish and chips plate with the best fried fish I've ever had. Even locals we were visiting said the fish was exceptional! Great options for beers and wines by glass or bottle. We failed to make it to dessert but the offerings were super tempting! The staff is great, music fantastic, and feel is just good - a place you want to make your go-to! Wish we could go again before we head home, but it's definitely flagged the next time we are back. It has that classic Oxford pub atmosphere that makes it worth visiting, especially if you're showing someone around the city or looking for a casual drink in a historic setting. There are outdoor tables, seating inside, and a smaller section in the back. During peak hours, it can get quite packed, so it is not always the easiest place to grab a table, but that also adds to the energy of the place. Overall, I would not necessarily come here expecting the best pub food in Oxford, but for the atmosphere, location, and quintessential Oxford experience, it is absolutely worth a stop.

We were a larger group with children in tow, and kept lucking out with the long table in the first room on the left. It does get rather busy at peak hours, but if you're patient or come at off peak hours, you'll snag a seat just fine. The fish & chips were a standout from all other fish & chips I had that trip. This is an American tourist review, so take that with a grain of salt, but we liked the food and the service was always friendly and quick.
