Set in a very nice little place in Headington Quarry, opposite the church where C.S. Lewis is buried, but still ideally located for anyone living in Headington. It is also very well situated for any visitors, with it being straight down Gladstone Road where the major buses drop-off. The place itself is small, but the layout is great and there is a huge garden with nice decking. There is also a separate function room, which hosts the biannual Headington Beer Festivals, organised by the operators of the pub. The pub boasts a fantastic selection of real ales, with Bitter & Twisted usually on offer along with 5/6 others. The pub is also home to The Old Bog Brewery, and you can buy their beer to take away in mini-kegs etc. It is really nice. The owners are really great and the staff are always extremely polite, friendly and welcoming. There are several clubs and societies which frequent the pub during the week, playing obscure card and table games, which is always a curiosity, and there is also some kind of billiard table which is unfamiliar to me. It shows sky football, but I tend to avoid pubs when this is on. Overall, if you visit here, then you will not be disappointed. If you live in the area then you really should check it out. It doesn't open until 7pm on a monday.

Food wise - I had scallops to start and they were perfect. I was told the wild garlic soup (another special) was exceptional. My duck confit was full of flavour, sitting on a bed of red cabbage, the only disappointment was the bean garnish which didn't add to an otherwise strong dish. The seafood linguini had generous proportions and seafood sauce had nice depth. The restaurant itself has a large light dining room, and an equally impressive bar area with a lot of local ales on tap. The staff are incredibly friendly and were so anxious to please, they made us feel wonderfully well looked after. We left feeling a bit overwhelmed with good eating and went for a post prandial walk around the village which is picture perfect. The Black Boy is worth seeking out as destination for a freindly family lunch, I would definitely go back.

This is one of those pubs that, while not ignoring because I was walking past it and it wasn't out…read moreof the way, I decided to have a drink. Otherwise I would have written it off because it pretty much looked like one of those outer suburban pubs that has no charm. However, since it is around the corner from where Lewis used to live, he actually did spend some time here drinking. Sure, they don't advertise the fact like they do with other pubs, but it does happen to have that notoriety, even if nothing else.
