Just tried this place for the first time recently. It was perfectly located of the red-line Morse stop so getting there after the snow storm was easy. I ordered a latte and it came in a cute glass mug. My only complaint was that it was mostly steamed milk so it felt like it wasn't quite filled up. Still delicious! Solid coffee shop with delicious pastries and savory bites. There is also great seating around the shop where you can get work done or just catch up with friends. The service is also very friendly! Ordered a latte, coconut chia pudding, and a maple apple pastry. The latte was standard, nothing special here. The foam was on the more bubbly side than thick and luxurious. The latte did its job though. The Coconut Chia Pudding was not overly sweet and the Coconut taste was wonderful! The texture was smooth with some shreds of coconut and the chia seeds. They also have it in Chocolate and Banana. The Apple Maple Pastry was also very delicious. It was like an apple turnover, but better. Paired with the latte, it was the perfect combination. Had delicious quiche & coffee here and Trey was the friendliest guy with a big heart for doggie visitors.

On my first visit, I made a serious study of this place. I was there long enough for a midafternoon drink, a light dinner, dessert, and an evening drink. During that whole time the barista Michelle was there by herself, thanks to a no-show colleague, but never lost her smile and her cheerful ebullience as she rushed from customer to customer and task to task. Not all the staff are so pleasant and dedicated (some are outright indifferent), but frankly I'm in love with her a little bit, so I keep coming back. Plus I really like it here otherwise. That hot first time, I wanted a refreshing iced tea, maybe something minty or slightly fruity, and they had exactly what I had in mind (Moroccan mint). I spent most of the afternoon in the back room, where it is quieter, but I got kicked out at 5 pm for a class. They host cultural and community events many nights of the week. The front room is kind of hectic and not the best spot from which to get some work done, but oh well. I've tried several of their soups, and they're all good. My favorite is the cheesy chicken enchilada, followed by the black bean. They have delicious-looking pies that I haven't tried yet. Their biggest prize is some sort of unique 1930's ice-cream mixing machine that they use to cook up their version of a DQ Blizzard. I ordered one with malted milk balls and asked for a touch of chocolate syrup in it, and Michelle the wonder-barista winked conspiratorially and said, "Excellent choice." They're also great with plain fruit mixed in, both the ice cream and frozen yogurt versions (sweet, old school frozen yogurt not the new-wave stuff). Iced mochas are my cool-me-down/feeling-desserty drink of choice, and the mochas here seem to achieve the right balance of coffee and chocolate flavor, at least for my taste. Also, this place is more comfortable and welcoming than Charmers, although Common Cup is a farther walk from my apartment, which might work against it in winter. But I'll still come, because this place is a perfect addition to the neighborhood and deserves our business. read more

Candied yam latte?? YES it's the perfect fall drink! Not overly sweet but just full of flavor. Really cozy coffeeshop with a fun atmosphere. It seems like the perfect spot to grab a drink, some yummy pastries and read a book/do some work for a few hours post-COVID. Current COVID protocols include limiting the number of customers inside at a time, closed indoor seating, masks mandatory, hand sanitizer at the counter, etc. Can't wait to come back to this black-owned business to try more! read more

Please don't let the negative reviews deter you - they are from people who don't appreciate craft coffee and prefer Starbucks or Dunkin. Or they were referring to previous management. The current management is fantastic - my drink was carefully crafted. They serve metric! I believe the owner's wife makes all the pastries in house and the savory quiche I had was delicious. They currently have peach dumplings I'm dying to try. Common Cup is also black-owned and puts local artists on display. Best coffee shop I've ever frequented. Quiet, quirky, and community centric. A fantastic place to work from. I work freelance from coffee shops nearly every day, and when I moved near the Common Cup I fell in love with this little neighborhood coffee shop. Plenty of power outlets available from nearly every seat and consistant free wifi. They have mostly firm plastic chairs with small two-seater marble-topped tables, a few six-seater tables, and four or five comfy armchairs. They have outdoor patio seating when weather is warm enough. They bake many of the bakery items themselves, and the brownies in particular are perfect. Those rich chocolate squares of heaven may be directly responsible for my gaining a few pounds of late. The breakfast sandwiches are simple but delicious. One of the most affordable menu items. They always have fantastic quiche as well, which is also baked onsite. They don't serve Intelligentsia any more, which is totally fine because they serve Counter Culture instead, which is incredibly delicious and more socially conscious. For drip coffee (my go-to) they have the Number 46 house blend as well as the Decaf Rustico Espresso blend available every day. They typically have a third carafe of rotating regional or organic blend available as well. Baristas are always super friendly and they recognize the regulars. The owners are community activists and church leaders and the shop is definitely a hotbed for community meetings and non-profit workers coordinating events and the like. All of their tips go to non-profits and they have raised thousands of dollars through tips alone for local groups. TLDR: Awesome neighborhood coffee shop that is actively making their neighborhood a better place, with delicious coffee and home-made bakery items. The common is a CLEAN, reason for capital letters is that is immaculate. I asked to use the washroom I have never seen a restaurant so clean you can smell how clean it is.I mean they don't use any sprays and smells clean. If you want Starbucks-like drinks go to Starbucks. The drinks here are of traditional coffee shop variety in a way most chain coffee shops - like Starbucks - are not. A trait that those who genuinely like coffee will appreciate. As a non-coffee enthusiast, my favorite thing about this place, other than the close proximity to my home, is the square footage. Students or those seeking a moderately quiet place to work will especially like place. With a separate room off the front coffee bar area, there is a great deal of seating (with tables and wall space with outlets for those with computers), comfortable and reasonably quiet. Price-wise, it's reasonable; certainly no more than Starbucks. Close to Morse and Loyola it is a great place to sit and study/work but also good for those early morning commuters on their way to catching the train. read more

Common Cup's hot chai is unique in that it's a great cup with menthol notes. Eucalyptus? Something. Very thick and gooey creme too, with a dash of cinnamon. I found this place on my way to Clark Street fest today and decided to relax and recharge my phone on the way back. It's easy to tell that the shop cares about your utility needs because there's an electrical outlet behind nearly every table in the place. They ask that you pay with cash when possible. Credit card merchant fees must be unbearable in this economy. read more

I stopped in and ordered a latte with no flavoring and extra espresso. It had a really delicate almost berry like taste with a slight biscuit like aftertaste. It was still slightly mild or underdistinguished even with four shots of espresso, but overall well done. read more

I've been here a few times since I moved down the block, wasn't the best but I thought it was a decent neighborhood spot to at least grab a quick coffee before work every once in a while. Just went in there today and asked to use the washroom, fully intending to purchase an iced tea on my way out. The white girl with glasses and facial acne stated that I needed to buy something first. Ya, that's fair. I told her that this wasn't my first time there and that I'd purchased before and I would buy something on the way out. She then loudly says "Ya, it's fine this one time but not next time." Idk, something but her (rude, a touch condescending) attitude rubbed me the wrong way. I just left and walked the half a block to my apartment to use the washroom. So much for being a neighborhood spot. And apparently they have a roach problem as well. Won't be returning. read more

Nice place; however, some staff might need help going over their job description. I was told on Tues early afternoon that we could not have shakes because she was making a lot that day and that her neck and wrists were hurting.... and that she had to "put her health first." I tried not to laugh, so I left quickly. I was imagining this lady on a large machine churning fresh yogurt. I don't think most businesses would be ok with their staff not making items on the menu. My advice to her would be to take a sick day if needed, wear a hand brace, or find a new job. I could only imagine what would happen if I told my boss that I would not do my job. read more

This was my go-to neighborhood coffee shop. I like that it's a locals-only type place that supports neighborhood artists and causes, and seems to have its heart in the right place. I've always just looked past the sort of dingy vibe and often-dodgy clientele (it's Rogers Park, after all) and enjoyed a nice enough place to get my work done. Today, they served me a large cup of coffee with a dead cockroach floating in it. I didn't discover I was truly sharing a Common Cup until I was about two thirds done and my coffee buddy decided to poke its head through the plastic lid to say hello to my teeth. The baristas were perfectly nice about it and fully refunded my coffee (with a sort-of confession about having to have the place sprayed twice as often as required), but it's enough to make this not my go-to neighborhood coffee shop. Bug problems are sort of a Rogers Park tradition, but that shouldn't extend to the coffee. If you do find yourself here, I would recommend avoiding the grungy upholstered furniture, and elevating your bag and belongings on a chair. There's obviously more to Common Cup than meets the eye. read more

The delicious apple pie will not only make me come back for more, it will lure me in on those days when I am miles away. I will travel for some good ole fashion apple pie--that is no lie folks! As a matter of fact I heart many of their treats--I drool over the bakery display (I smile as I type this because tis too true!) and defy anyone not to. The coffee is also very tasty and you get it in a mug--nice. They are not a flashy or chi-chi place. As a matter of fact the entire place looks like it is filled with classroom decor. The space is rather large, so if you are looking for a place to have a study group--this would not be a bad option. I had a lovely afternoon here once with a good friend & it felt very open, yet comfy. Not a bad place to host a book club either. The staff are very friendly & will answer any questions you have. The name The Common Cup conjures up images of plain coffee and bran muffins, but in reality, the place offers so much more - and I am not just talking about the menu! The girls working there are SO nice and friendly, and I love the idea of the tip jar money going to a charity! How cool is that! But back to the menu - this is just some of the things The Common Cup offers: coffee of the day, espresso, cappuccino, lattes, mocha's,con panna, cafe au lait, hot cocoa, chai, milk steamers, iced coffee, 12 varieties of hot tea, iced tea, blended iced coffee drinks, scones, muffins, cookies, danish, croissants, bagels, homemade pies, soup, yogurt parfaits, fresh fruit, juices, organic chocolate milk, sandwiches,salads AND breakfast sandwiches !!! Holy bejeezus. I was totally unprepared for the selection offered me but finally decided on a coffee (WONDERFULLY brewed, btw) and a tomato florentine soup, which was very tomatoey and a perfect sized lunch with the accompanying multi-grain bread. I am so glad this place is so convenient to my work and that they open as early as 6am. This is a great local business and I am happy to support them over a Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts anyday. Service is horrible. Sunday afternoon at the coffee shop was made terrible by her. I ordered a latte and a slice of pie to be warmed. Waitress (younger lady) didn't hear me and made a rude statement as such. From there, no thank you after I paid. Handed me a microwaved pie, which she overheated to the point that it burnt my tongue. My girlfriend and I went admittedly 'late' on a weeknight for frozen yogurt. We probably arrived at 7:35/7:40. They close at 8pm. There were other patrons already in the shop and two employees. Nothing's pre-mixed, so they have to chop up whatever you've asked to have put in your yogurt. It took nearly 15 minutes for them to fill our order. One of the employees was more interested in announcing how many minutes there were left before they closed than in helping fill our order. She left the other employee to struggle to fill last minute orders. The sheer atrociousness of the customer service and the lack of cooperation between the staff is mind-boggling. The yogurt isn't anything special, but besides La Monarca on Clark, there's no place to get frozen yogurt in Rogers Park. The hours are horrible. Who serves ice cream/yogurt in the summer and closes at 8pm? The service was horrible. Our orders weren't complicated and shouldn't have taken so long to fill. I'm here to tell you if you live in the neighborhood, don't go after 7:30. You may not get served. The employees are more interested in going home than serving you. read more

Giving back to one's community is laudable, though using that admirable impulse to sell one's product and fill a jar with guilt tips is not. Really, why not drink good, hot, coffee drinks some more enjoyable, more warm and friendly elsewhere and give as much of your money as you like to charities of your own choosing? "Friends don't let friends drink Starbucks," boldly states a sign posted in this establishment (Really? WWJVD*?) At least we know that Starbucks is now required by law to give their employees all the tips they receive without even a portion distributed to ownership's pet projects. Common Cup, I really, really want to love you. I really do. And it breaks my heart that I don't. You are so much closer to me than Stella and you are so kind to the community around you, but... I just haven't been able to enjoy you. And it's a shame, because all it would really take is changing the atmosphere - more comfortable chairs, a couple of accent walls in a rich color, better sights and sounds, coziness. Also making your chai about 40% less cardamom-y. You're a little pricey, which I would be totally fine with if there were a better atmosphere to escape to. Espresso was watery and one dimensional. For those that care, crema was absent. Latte milk needs to be frothed differently. Aim for a "shiny" appearance. Also, tapping the frothing cup should help with getting rid of large bubbles. There were no other customers waiting or placing orders when I arrived. No rush.
