My husband and I decided to visit this thrift shop during our staycation, and I was very excited to finally get the chance to peruse their items. I love supporting small businesses, and I never pass up a trip to a thrift shop. I found a blazer that I liked, but I needed to make sure that it fit my shoulders, so I tried it on over my clothes. Immediately, I heard a woman barking loudly near me that trying on clothing was not allowed because of their return policy. I turned to see who was being loud and obnoxious, when I saw a short, elderly woman with salt and pepper hair jabbing at the air with her fingers, saying the same thing over and over again (you can find a picture of her in a previous review). The tone she used and the spectacle she was making made me laugh at her out of pure bewilderment. My husband and I immediately agreed that we didn't want to spend our money at a place where the staff didn't know how to treat people with kindness and respect. I hung up my items and we promptly left. I wish I had read the reviews before taking time out of my day to go there. read more

My husband and I have visited this shop a few times, but we won't be returning. There are no fitting rooms, and when my husband tried on a shirt over his clothes, a staff member told us it wasn't allowed because of theft concerns. This meant we had to make an extra trip later just to return items that didn't fit. Today, we visited with our son and were told we couldn't bring our stroller inside; we were expected to carry the baby instead. When I asked where to put the stroller, the employee told me to leave it OUTSIDE . I'm not going to risk having my stroller stolen while shopping at a thrift store. I donate SO much and my kids also buy a lot from here. We've been coming for about 5 years and this lady in the picture is a pure devil. Don't believe me? Bring your kid there and let them touch the toys on the shelf but if they drop one you will get yelled at! I came about a week ago with a drink and the lady working there told me I wasn't allowed. As soon as I was done I enter and another lady who was white had been drinking something and she did not bat an eye. I'm not sure if this lady is racist or not but I am hispanic and her telling me I couldn't enter with a drink but letting a white woman in with a drink is complete bull. I've also seen the mistreatment she has towards this one employee it's just sick. read more

The Closet has new management and she has done a great job in reorganizing the floor and the parking. She is passionate about the mission and seem to care deeply. The 2 stars off is for a rude dark-skin check-out-staff around 5'2", short-salt and-pepper hair with a generally sour demeanor. She does not miss an opportunity to bark at customers. Any message can be equally effective, if not more so, in the same loud commanding volume without the abrasive tone, signaling pclients out for humiliation. I highly suggest that this person be coached by management on tone and approach so that individuals already at the bottom of the economic echelon leave The Closet dispirited for looking for second hand clothing to wear. That attitude is unkind and has no business in the Closet and belongs strictly to a person who does not interface with clients. read more

Update: Although I was wary to return to The Closet after my not so great experience a couple of years ago, I decided to give it another shot after a good friend suggested we go. I was surprised to see that the store looked very different from my previous visit and I could be wrong but I didn't see the area where I was scolded for crossing a line of tape anymore. My friend and I found some great items and truly enjoyed ourselves. Overall my most recent visit was a great experience and all employees were pleasant. I now feel more confident to return in the future :) read more

Thrifting is subjective. Everyone wants different things... some clothes, some electronics, some books... Some don't mind digging. Others expect neatness. Price is also pretty subjective. That said, I hit the jackpot here. Many great finds and some I even left behind thinking I should go back for. When I stopped in on Saturday afternoon, this place was hopping! Busy, busy, busy. The line moved fairly quickly, though. I don't live nearby, but if I did, it'd be a frequent stop. I had a great day shopping here. read more

I came here today to browse at a few items. I picked up a sun shield screen for the car. There was no tag on it. When I went to pay for it, the very rude sales associate said no can't buy it, no tag. I mean c'mon, it's a small item so I can shield the sun from my kids car window! Said store policy. She was so rude! I've donated here before, not donating or coming here anymore based on my experience today. Seems like it's the same sales associate that I've read about in the reviews. read more

I visited The Closet and was pleased with the wide selection and quality of items! However, my experience was ruined when I inadvertently stepped into an employees only area. When a volunteer immediately scolded, I realized my mistake of missing the sign and apologized. As I tried to walk away, the volunteer stopped me and told me AGAIN to read the sign because she would "put me to work" if I went back there again. It was a condescending experience and I would've hoped to be offered more grace, especially as a first time customer. In a place that is overwhelming with stimuli and items to browse, the signs are easy to overlook. I think roping off employee areas from the shopping aisles or putting up dividers may help curb the issue and relieve this source of obvious frustration for the owners/volunteers. read more

I've been wanting to check out this location for a few months and finally popped in on rainy Wednesday morning. There is limited street parking available. There is a small parking lot located to the rear of the building that you can only access from the main street in front of the store. The rear of the building is also where they collect locations. There is a front and rear entrance to the store depending on where you've parked. The store itself is extremely cluttered with lots of odds and ends and great prices. Things to note: -don't recommend bringing kids -very crowded -$10 minimum to use a credit card read more

I've lived in the area for many years and finally discovered this place, its located smack dab in the middle of "old town Herndon" Its set back from Elden street so if you're not super familiar with the side streets of Herndon this place might be a bit challenging to find (although central Herndon is pretty small). At any rate, I was looking for a new place to donate items that would serve the community as a whole versus making a profit (a la others). Parking is available in the rear of the store as is the area to drop off donated items. Donation hours don't align with store hours so I'd recommend checking their website if you have items to drop off. The volunteers are helpful in helping you unload stuff from the car as well. The store has expanded I know some of the older reviews mentioned the pain of remodeling but the store is bigger which makes it easier, although generally when I hit up a thrift store I try and avoid weekends where it tends to be busier since I like to be leisurely in looking for stuff. I'm glad I found this place as another option to donate items that still have plenty of life left in them and perhaps could be a good find for someone else. read more

What a wonderful place to shop for gently used and new clothes, fashion accessories, jewelry, kitchen items, pictures, small appliances, lamps, craft supplies, record albums, CD's, small furniture items and much more. All are priced extremely low and funds go directly to help the less fortunate. Volunteers are kind, hard working and good at keeping the store well organized with new items daily. The Closet is our thrift store of choice - to buy and to donate. We choose to donate here because they have provided a lot of assistance to the community. When I donate quality and once expensive items, I don't feel bad. I know the profit will go toward projects and scholarships for low income families. I'm a fan of donating in general. The prices here are very reasonable. They have deals where certain items get an additional discount on some days. We have purchased toys for our little one, luggage bags, children's books, and arts & crafts; all in new and good condition of course. As parents, we try to budget for our kid. Pop-up books for $1, wooden toys to help develop fine motor skills for $5, and samsonite luggage duffles for $15 make a difference for us. And of course the proceeds go toward a greater cause. read more

This store is a favorite of mine, full of all sorts of useful items very reasonably priced. All sales go toward community services and projects. My friend Hedy from Reston loves finding designer scarves as well as Hawaiian shirts that she sends to a project for US servicemen and women overseas. I am extremely disappointed by the way this store is run. Having lived in the herndon area for many years, I had frequently visited this thrift store. I had an unfortunate incident with the manager, Patricia "Pat" Rhodes, at this store on 12/8/2020. I requested to see an item that was on the window, the manager very rudely asked what my size was. After telling her my size she refused to sell me the item since she claimed "it wouldn't fit me". This incident is very upsetting to me since I was a very frequent shopper. Not only does her behavior not make any sense since I am a paying customer and in no way was being disrespectful, so her response was not warranted. I will not be returning any time soon, and I hope that they have training on their staff. If I could give zero stars I would. read more

For a charity organization, they are heartless and rule-bound. I bought three clothing items for a new job that won't start for weeks and for which I won't be paid for two months. As I was checking out, I asked the cashier if it would be possible to return the items since The Closet doesn't allow you to try on clothing. I was assured I had 4 days to return the items. I left, tried on the items, found they didn't fit, brought them back --within a half hour. After waiting in line another 15 minutes, I was told they didn't refund money for items purchased- even though there was no way to try on the clothes before purchase. I appealed to the manager- this is a charity, right? I'm needing my money back to look for work clothes elsewhere. There was no consideration of my circumstances or that the cashier had not told me I could only receive store credit. I left with the items I can't wear because I will never return to this place. read more

To preface my family and I have been donating clothes here for a few years now, the other day I dropped off a bag of jackets and realized I accidentally donated a jacket I currently wear as it was in the wrong pile of clothes. So I headed over to the closet to see if I could get it back. I went around the whole store intending to buy it back if I saw it but didn't end up finding it so I asked a worker for help. Explaining the situation she informed me it was already shipped out in storage and I had no luck in finding it. I tried to show her a picture of the jacket but she didn't even look at it. I wanted to try on some dresses and I was told by a sales associate that I would have to buy them and try them on at home because they don't have fitting rooms. She said that if it didn't fit I could return the items within 4 days. I asked the cashier before buying their return policy as well, she said the same thing. I bought the dresses. I came back the next day to return the ones that didn't work out and come to find that they only give back STORE CREDIT. NO ONE TOLD ME THIS PRIOR. I have been shopping at the Closet for more than 20 years. I love the assortment, organization, and prices. I do have a few comments. They have hired cashiers who can be outright rude. Plus standing around chatting while people are waiting in line is inappropriate. It appears that there are fewer volunteers and more paid staff which cuts into what it can do for the community. I appreciate having hand sanitizer but they need to control the # of people in the store. Social distancing is not possible. One way in with a counter is needed. A good volunteer task! COVID-19 Update: The Closet is tiny and it is impossible to social distance. The last time we visited in June, everyone was wearing a mask, but I still cut my visit a bit short because of the total disregard other shoppers had for elbowing their way in front of each other. No social distancing possible in the payment line either. Went here yesterday for the first time and won't be returning. Employee yelled at my children and niece (who is an adult!) and nephew 3 times because my 11 year old son was with them. She told them to find his legal guardian and as they walked around looking for me she yelled at them 2 more times. They were not misbehaving- they know better and are not little kindergartners. If they were running around and misbehaving then I completely understand. Also, had she just spoken to them in a civil manner that would have made a world of difference, but she did not. She yelled at them 3 times within a 2-3 MINUTE TIME FRAME! I was in another section of the store where you walk through a different doorway so that is why they did not find me immediately. Not to mention in this part of the store it was difficult to distinguish which sections were "employee only" and which areas were part of the store. So, they could improve this part of the store as well. I put down the items I had in my hand and we walked out. Per other reviews, it seems like they need a lesson in customer service! read more

The store is wonderful! Absolutely love it, however I took some stars off because as soon as I get there to park, I end up going the wrong way and GOD FORBID WE ALL MAKE MISTAKES WHEN WE DRIVE. There was a man probably in the receiving area of the shop who completely yelled at me to not park at the spot I was parking at and I asked him why and he said "YOU NEED TO MOVE YOUR CAR BECAUSE YOU CAME THE WRONG WAY SO YOU NEED TO MOVE YOUR CAR AND PARK AGAINN. First of all this really irritated me because I don't need someone to tell me and yell at me for going the wrong way. It was my fault for going the wrong way, yes however did not appreciate to be reprimanded like a little child by a grown ass man. Utterly humiliating in front of others. I went to this place at the beginning of the month with a friend from out of town and absolutely loved the organization, the quality of the things in the shop, and the staff was really nice. You've probably never heard of it, but it's been there for over 35 years. Hiding in plain sight in the centre of downtown Herndon is The Closet. The hours are terribly inconvenient (3 days a week, 10am-2pm) and the parking can be tricky if you are not on a bike. However, it's what's inside that counts. For apparel, you can get everything here from 80's and 90's rejects (Member's Only, extra-loud Tommy Hilfiger, LA Gear) to brand-name dress clothes (Brooks Brothers, Thomas Dean, even St. Croix Knits). There are knick-knacks, toys, and plenty of no-name and old bestseller books. The jewelry and old cameras are worth a look too. The place is always packed and all sorts of people can be found here from old folks to hipsters. If you can make the trip during their narrow hours, it will definitely be worth your time. Oh, don't forget to bring cash. The Closet is run by a network of churches and it's cash-only to keep operating expenses down read more

This place is a riot--in a good way. The hours are terrible (10-2 three days a week). It's packed with people and only sort of loosely organized. Parking is well-nigh impossible. You know that game with the plastic cars that you have to move around to try to get the red car out without removing the pieces? Yeah. Just bite the bullet, park up the street and walk. You're probably wondering then why the 5 star review? First, tell them you're a newbie and they'll ring the big bell in the front of the store. Hilarious! They definitely encourage repeaters though. Many of the customers and staff seemed to have known each other for years and years. Second, look up. A lot of the best stuff is placed high up on shelves (vintage globes, cheap lamps) and if you need help getting something down, forget the staff (who are super friendly and helpful, but not always obvious), just ask the nearest tall person. Even the customers are friendly here! Finally, the prices are very fair. On a recent trip, I bought a vintage ceramic planter for $4, a HUGE lamp shade for $4 ($60 new), a white linen tablecloth for $4 and a vintage globe for $4 (often $20 at other local thrifts). Not everything costs $4. I got some needlepoint kits & embroidery hoops for 25-50 cents each and nice serving utensils for $1. It seems to be a good place for clothes, toys, crafts (lots of yarn and fabric at very low prices) and housewares. Don't bother looking for furniture. The selection is small and lackluster. Also, everyone was carrying loaves of bread that were available from big buckets at both ends of the store. I'm not sure what the deal was with that. Free maybe? I didn't ask. One quick note: bring cash. I had to run up to an ATM because I rarely carry cash and they don't take credit cards. read more

If you like thrifting - THIS little store should definitely be on your list. The people who work/volunteer are just as amazing as the stuff in the store. The other reviews are accurate regarding the place being stuffed w/ goods, from floor to ceiling. And w/ slim hours/days open, Saturdays are a very very busy time for them. However, even w/ a ton of people and loads of things to look at, smiles and bargains are everywhere. I would leave small kids at home though (I do) and grab a cup of coffee while you're out. Great place to donate and even better place find treasures! Staff and volunteers are always super friendly. New expanded hours makes it easier to find a time to stop in and now they accept credit cards too!! Renovation made the flow of the store more open and inviting. Dressing rooms could use a little updating but thankful for the option and beyond functional for a thrift store. It would be our first and last time visiting and last time donating to the store. We returned the items to the rack before leaving. Not a family-friendly store for families with little kids. I went here for the first time today. I loved this thrift store. I am kind of sad that after living in this area for over 15 years I am just discovering this place as I am getting ready to move out of state. Needless to say, the store was clean organized and the staff was super friendly. The prices were spot on and I found quite a few treasures!
