We needed a pair of sliding doors for the closet in the master bedroom of our new apartment in NYC. After getting an astronomical quote from The Container Store for a pair of their Elfa doors (excluding installation and removal of the old doors), I found The Closet Builder via a search on Google. I made contact with Fiona, who was able to give me a quote via email relatively quickly, and invited me to visit the office in NJ to check out their offerings. While there, Fiona took the time to show us many different style and function combinations. We settled on white glass sliding doors. After our meeting, we exchanged several emails regarding closet organization for the master bedroom and the entryway, and Fiona was very quick to respond and patient with the requests that we had. We settled on a design and then the installer (Norbert) visited the apartment to take measurements. Scheduling was very easy, and the installation took a few hours, during which Norbert and crew were very neat, courteous, and efficient. I read the reviews on yelp on Closet Builder and figured lets give them a call. I called and left a message and the following day received a callback and scheduled an appt for the later that day. The vendor showed up on time ( granted I live down the road), and came in and I explaine the layout I had envisioned. He took all his measurements. I went over his sketch etc. I would say the appt. lasted for 10 mins max and he said he would have a quote ready for me the following day. Well, the following day came and went. Over the next 2/3 days; I called and left a message or two, and on one occasion I did get the vendor the phone he said he would email the quote. Well, I never received quote; which leads me to believe he's not interested in doing the job. Moving on... I just can't have my clothes laying on the floor for one day. The part that gets my goat is that we want to support local business, but if this is how the client / customer is treated then shame on you. read more

I scaled down and moved from the house into a condo. Because of a smaller space, I wanted to make sure I use every inch of it well. I had The Closet Builder install 5 closets including a kitchen pantry and a walk-in. Norbert, who came out to my place did a good job with the design and generally, I like the quality of the materials and the way they look. I also felt that the price is good. There is one design problem in the largest of them -- my walk-in closet -- and two months later I am still having trouble getting his attention and getting it fixed. That's disappointing. So i searched online and i found Nevato, i was a bit worried about the quality because i can only see picture of the doors. I found the Closet Builder on Google and boy what a find! They were more reasonably priced than the companies here in Manhattan, and also offer so much more customization options. The staff is also super friendly, and efficient. In under 5 hours, they managed to rip out my old closet and replace it with a new interior and set of sliding doors. The quality of my new closet is outstanding and it's also so beautiful, I'm a total dweeb and can't stop staring at it. The beautiful glass doors have also turned things up a notch in my apartment! Ode to the Closet builders - A little background on the project I had just completed thanks to the amazing skills / materials of Norbert and team. I had a washer / dryer that I wanted to move into a spare closet to free up some space up on the top floor of a triplex in Hoboken. This entailed a re-route of water lines, demolition of a wall, re-patch of sheetrock, and re-build of a wall closet to cover up the boiler / washer /dryer. So, I took on a majority of the project myself, and became really familiar with how the top floor was built out. I believe the condo where the work was done was retro-fitted from an old factory back in the day the top floor was made to accommodate a roof patio. The way the building is laid out is not perfect to say the least...particularly the top floor of the triplex: The floors, the ceilings, and wall paneling was not perfectly aligned and to boot, the washer and dryer was further out from the wall than expected. So, to say the least, building a custom floor-to-ceiling closet door was going to be a task in engineering. I did the research to contact several custom closet door builders and options (including IKEA). Being familiar with various building materials, labor, etc. It was a no-brainer once I took a look at the materials that Norbert was using. Really solid machined aluminum frames + quality wood or glass inserts custom made to fit dimensions of the project. Norbert even let me hold onto some sample materials to use in comparison to the competitors. (He sources the materials from a company called Nevato) This was a big confidence factor for me as well. Seriously, who does that in this day and age? I took the sample, kicked it around, knocked on it for heft and durability. Did return the samples to Norbert after the project and still solid! The frames and materials for my project took Norbert (2 business days to turn around) And he was very good about follow-ups, punctuality, calling, emailing, etc. The day of the installation was scheduled for 7/16 with a review of what needed to be done at 7:30AM. 7:30AM and the doorbell rings. Do I love punctuality! That's the sign of someone who considerate of his client's time. Later, Norbert called to let me know that he is wrapping up. I show up a bit early to watch as the team puts on the final touches on the closets and going back over their work to make sure nothing was forgotten. The project lead on the team, I believe his name was Alfred, was a perfectionist. Personally, as a guy who can be OCD when it comes to the work on his own house...this guy put me to shame! His work was right next to a patch job that I had worked on earlier in the week and now I have to go back to match this guy's expertise! I should have made another trip to the bank to get a bigger tip for Alfred. So, as I was walking the team out and thanking them. I remembered that Norbert's company had 2 reviews on Yelp, nothing on Google, nothing on Angie's list, and very little on the internet. So in passing, I asked Norbert - "You ever hear of the internet? You know I did a LOT of research on custom closet doors and you barely popped up? Ever heard of Yelp? These reviews can really help out other people looking to get some work done for their places! I'm going to do you a favor and put up the details of this job on the internet for you!" So to credit Norbert and his team....a busy guy (me) is taking some solid time away from his work day to write you a review. Great and efficient closet builders. Unfortunately I only used The Closet Builder to build closet doors and not the inside and I am very happy with final result. After searching for interesting and contemporary designs and companies throughout NJ and Manhattan areas, this is by far the best I found for the price I paid. Albeit this was not what I initially had hoped for - I quickly learned the doors I wanted were only made by a handful of companies around the Globe, mainly in Italy, and cost around $5k each! I've been looking for a reputable contractor to redesign and expand my bedroom closet. Based on the reviews I saw here (and the fact that he's only 15 minutes away), I called Norbert on Wednesday. When we spoke he told me he had another client he was going to see in my area and he would call me right back to give me a time for the estimate. He never called back. I actually first went to a major glass sliding door company and a separate major closet organizer for estimates. I did not like the fact that the glass doors were not made in the US and the time interval between ordering and receiving was too long. they also used outside contractors for installation - too many "moving parts" to go wrong. closet organizer company sent a very inexperienced person who "tuned out" exactly what I needed - more single hang space. Her design only had double hang. I found the Closet Builder on Yelp and felt the reviews seemed genuine. Norbert is the consummate professional - heard my needs, re-worked design when one element did not match needs, AND came up with a custom design for my shoes - a BIG DEAL! It's not always easy finding quality companies to work with when doing home renovations. That's why when I meet someone really good, I want to give them a shout out. The guys from The Closet Builder are some of the best I've ever come across in our many home renovations projects we've done over the last decade . They just completed installing a custom built-in wardrobe for us in our master bedroom, with Nevato doors, and I could not be happier with the results. Fiona and Norbert are very easy to work with, friendly, professional and accommodating. They were patient with us while we went back and forth on the colors and configuration, and took a month long vacation in between. Norbert even helped us save quite a bit of money with one of his suggestions on the interior of the wardrobe. The built-in wardrobe came out truly stunning, and super functional to boot. Their installation crew showed up on time, were very courteous,and probably did the cleanest job in history (they asked for a vacuum, and left the space where they worked spotless after they were done). Cannot recommend The Closet Builder team strong enough! UPDATE: Upon installation of the closet, we asked Norbert and Fiona if they could build us matching nightstands. I found this company simply by "googling". What a find! Norbert was on time with an estimate, answered emails and delivered all that was promised. Even though this was a relatively small job (sliding doors replacing bi-fold doors in an apartment) he was friendly, informative and efficient from the beginning.
