Always a pleasure just wish they would update the seats might need to start bringing a cushion. But the people are always wonderful, helpful, and the drinks and snacks are great. We went to see The marriage of Figaro. It was fun, funny, and the opera was beautifully sung.

Stage set for pride and prejudice.

Went to watch Live act of Pride and Prejudice. The actors and actresses did a excellent job. Little bit unorganized to get in and out of the theatre and get drinks but overall a great night out.

The set for Playing With Fire is amazing!

As a 5+ year season ticket holder for The Citadel, I can tell you that I really love the selection of shows that they put on every year. Some are of course better than others, but everyone has their own opinions. Personal favourites include The Forbidden Phoenix, Next to Normal, Hanna's Suitcase, Beauty and the Beast and Mary Poppins, but there have been so many excellent productions here. The great thing about having season tickets is the ease of changing dates for a particular show if I can't attend due to things that have arisen. Sure there are other benefits too, but I adore that aspect. It also forces me to get out and do something for myself: see awesome theatre! While my tastes tend to be more for ensemble casts, musicals, and other larger scale productions some of the one person shows here have also been pretty amazing. Each of the stages in this venue provide positives and negatives depending on your seats, the production, your eyesight etc., but I like sitting relatively close to the front. The Citadel also offers good parking and LRT access (it is attached to the pedway system and to a parkade), and there's a great indoor garden and waterfall as well as the many events that happen in The Club. You can also rent venues here for special events, and Rapid Fire Theatre performs here too!

Maclab Theatre. Special Q&A opportunity with the creators and actors of the play Ubuntu!

Before the show, there was a cash only bar (ATMs nearby) just outside the Maclab Theatre entrance. However, you are only allowed to bring bottled water and strangely enough, ice cream (according to my boyfriend) into the Maclab Theatre. There were also signs at the cash bar, cautioning that there would be no intermission during the 90 minute play. I'm sure many people with small bladders appreciated this particular heads up. When I entered the Maclab Theatre, three ushers helped me find my seat. I found the sections and seating were pretty straightforward but I appreciated the help from the ushers. I sat in section B, row G and seat 3. My ticket was only about $30+. It was an awesome view for this low price. I was kind of glad that I didn't buy the more expensive seating! You can get a great view from pretty much any angle. Although from the extreme sides of the stage, you would obviously get more of a side view of the actors. In addition, the rise of the seats allow you to easily see past the person in front of you. As I'm petite, this is an important feature for me. It's not fun to have your view obstructed during a play. The acoustics were pretty good! I didn't have a hard time hearing the actors even though they didn't have any microphones. However, someone with hearing difficulties might have some trouble. In this case, it may be beneficial to get seats closer to the stage to hear the actors more easily. Overall, I enjoyed watching an amazing play in the Maclab Theatre. I've seen shows in the other theatres/venues at the Citadel and they've all been wonderful experiences! There's always something happening here! I totally recommend this place!

Cool boat in the Citadel Theatre.

Even if you're not a live theatre regular, the Citadel is still a great place to go just to do something different. I rarely see any plays here, because I am more of a Fringe person, but when I do, it's a good experience. Last time I went, I saw this play called Noises Off! It wasn't bad. The theatre is big and nice, but it is old. The seats are comfortable, and there's enough room, so you can stretch your legs out. The intermission is a treat to look forward to, since they sell frozen desserts like ice cream on a stick... mmm. And although you can bring your ice cream in the theatre to eat, you cannot bring your garbage in there. I guess they don't want crinkly noises going on during the play. You can also get alcoholic drinks, pop, and water. The tickets are usually quite expensive, but you can get discounted tickets. You have to check the website or call.

So generally I love the Citadel. I love the plants and water features around the theaters. I love the diversity of shows. The price is pretty decent. If you are okay going with mid week, you can catch a show for just under 35 bucks. Most plays I have enjoyed. They have a decent bar (or although overpriced but no different than any other large theater venue that I have been in). Love the sippy cup rule they have put into place recently, where you can bring in the beverage of your choice during the show. The reason why I gave it a 3 star rating is that as a disability advocate, they don't have things in place to make the performances inclusive. For example at the Jube, they have a separate room for people who vocalize but still want to enjoy the play. So I can bring my kid in to see the Nutcracker and if she is too loud for the other patrons, she can still enjoy the performance and not be disruptive to others. Citadel does not have this. If she is too loud for say A Christmas Carol, she will be asked to leave. Nor, does the Citadel have "relaxed performances" where it is expected that there will be some background noise and people feel safe bringing others in that may be a bit disruptive. If we go with the idea that the arts are for everyone, then theaters should be accommodating this.

Check out these amazing queens of SIX!!! You can watch the megasix on our YouTube channel!

I see ALOT of theatre! I travel all over the globe to see musicals and plays and have to say that my entire experience at the Citadel this past weekend was one of if not THE BEST theatre experiences to date! We flew in from the San Francisco Bay Area to see SIX - The Musical and when I tell you that by our 4th visit there (all in the same weekend) - we felt like we were at home. The entire venue is easy to access, tons of space, clean functional bathrooms, bar tenders who are not only fast but friendly and an usher staff that sets the bar!! We booked SIX 4 times and it happened to be one crazy weekend! Some of the cast members were injured but like they say...the show must go on and it did! These QUEENS put on an "unplugged type concert" and it was just as magical as seeing the show in its full capacity. We got to see the lovely alternates shine and were very impressed by the stage manager, assistant stage manager and the rest of the crew for the hustle they managed while keeping it cool under pressure. Special shout out the super sweet spot light operator who was so very kind to us broads! We HIGHLY recommend anyone going to the Citadel! Our fellow audience members were such a delight! We met some amazing folks and do plan to come back to Edmonton for more fantastic theatre! Bravo to you all for giving us Broads one hell of a weekend in Canada!!

Mary Poppins was amazing! Felt like I was 10 again! Excellent acting, singing, and casting! Can't get the songs out of my head! Recommended for people of all ages! Bravo! Glad I am a season ticket holder will be renewing for fall 2014

Citadel Theatre, one of my favorite venues in Edmonton. There is always something happening here. I've been here mainly to enjoy comedies, dramas and musicals! Citadel opened in 1976 in this location. There are five performances spaces, so far I've visited two of them (first two) but I can't wait to visit the other three! Shoctor Theatre, Maclab Theatre, The Club, the Zeidler Hall, the Lee Pavilion and the Tucker Amphitheatre! As far as I know the theatre season runs from September to May. There are two elevators and several bathrooms around the spaces. If the day of your visit to this venue there are other activities happening in Churchill Square chances of finding parking are going to be reduced. Another nice thing I found is that if for any reason you arrive late for a performance, you will be seated in a designated latecomer seating area. You will be able to move to your seat at intermission. The Box office area is big enough and the cashiers are nice and they know pretty well the theatre, the spaces and sitting charts. Also did you know that you can rent some areas of the theater for your Wedding Ceremony!!

I snapped this one ninja style when the MacLab's photo police weren't looking,

My wife and I were at the MacLab Theatre for the Randy Bachman concert last night. Love it here - classy, spacey, comfy and soundtastic (new word of the day). It's the kind of theatre you want to pronounce as 'thee-ah-tuh'. You know you're in a classy environment when well-dressed staff members materialize out of thin air to tell you "no pictures!" It's a top-secret environment to be enjoyed by privileged insiders only. Just like the executive bathroom on Family Guy. It's a great venue for live music. There's not a bad seat in the place either. The seating is arranged in a semi-circle around the stage allowing for an awesome view of the performance regardless of where you're sitting. The acoustics of the 'thee-ah-tuh' allow for quieter moments too. Bachman tells a lot of stories in between songs and he's kind of a soft speaker but he was easy to hear because of the venue's great sound quality. If this show had taken place in River Cree's hemorrhoid tent as it was originally scheduled for, all of the between-song musings would have been lost on the audience. You're allowed to bring beverages inside which I found surprising as many auditoriums and theatres (the Jube) do not allow drinks in the seating area. The only negative I can think of for the MacLab is the numbering on the seats. The numbers are small and are stamped on the *bottom* of the chairs for some reason. If you crawl down the aisles you can see the numbers easily but if you're standing, they're a little difficult to see. When I first walked in I thought there was an Easter egg hunt going on with so many people hunched over looking under seats. In closing, I want to thank the River Cree Resort and Casino for violating building codes at their concert venue thereby forcing all their scheduled shows to move to superior venues such as the MacLab

    Looks familiar doesn't it?!!

We have been going annually to the Mayfield for our wedding anniversary for over 10 years now…read more Until now, we have been very happy with our choice, except perhaps for the time they did improv. This year, we happened to go the first week of the new season, Simon and Garfunkle. The show was excellent, the two singers channelling Paul Simon and Art Garfunkle perfectly. The only fault I could find with the show was that the drums were inappropriately loud. I have S&G vinyl that I just played to prove that my memories of the 60's are quite correct: The drums on the original are very subdued. The likely cause is that the program had a long resume for the drummer. Likely his ego was as puffed up as his resume. Where we were disappointed was with the dinner. It's always a buffet and excellent if you arrive as soon as the doors open. This time, we chose the brisket from the carvery and found it quite dry. The baked desserts were stale, as if they had been saved for the month the MDT was closed. Everything elsa was freshly made, salads and the items on the steam tables. Another problem was with the air conditioning. My wife complained that it was too cold in the theatre and was told that nothing could be done about it. Thankfully, the staff brought her a fuzzy warm blanket that she was able to wrap around herself. Before the show started, I looked around and another man in short sleeves was wrapped up as well. There had been a late summer heat wave which would have required cooling one or two nights before. The MDT should have been able to adapt more quickly. Hopefully when our anniversary rolls around next year, the MDT will be back on its game.

It is one of those cute Valentine's type of shows that they play that time of year. Fairly predictable but enjoyable. The service we recieved was excellent considering that it was a buffet but the servers were attentive and our water and wine glasses were always topped up. Buffet is large and extensive. I normally dislike buffets but here they are well executed. Salad bar, a small seafood session (didn't enjoy the sushi rolls), cheese section. What has changed is instead of the prime rib station was replaced with a striploin and beef brisket station. I tried a piece of each. They were certainly not stingly. I am surprised on how much I enjoyed the striploin. But for a girl that doesn't like sweets, I love the Mayfield dessert choices. They are bite size so you can try a selection. I always get the rice pudding. So for a fairly predictable night out for both food and entertainment, which you won't be blown away but you won't be disappointed, try here.

I had no previous theatre experience, but the volunteers (they have one paid administrator, the rest is entirely volunteer run) scooped me up, fostered any talent I had in me and let me run with it. I am continually amazed at the professionalism in this amateur community theatre. Their most recent production, Nine, was phenomenal. The stage was incredible. The musicians were outstanding, the cast and crew were amazing. From upside down singing on a stripper pole, to dance numbers with a huge cast - this little theatre transported the audience out of their seats and into the Italian spa. The art in the lobby is indeed from local artists and is coordinated before each show to reflect the themes in the show. All are available for purchase and is a great way to integrate local artists into our community. The theatre is cozy and very intimate, but not too small that you feel claustrophobic. Ticket prices range from $12-$20, the first Thursday of every run is 2 for 1. Also the Monday before the show opens is Student night - students get in free with a valid Student ID. Amazing deal! Located next to the Strathcona Farmer's Market, the building is a converted fire hall - the first in Strathcona - and the building is a designated heritage spot at over 100 years old.
