Moving from Virginia to New Jersey middle of last year and moving to Monroe TWP, we have been exploring restaurants especially South Asian ones. We discovered Mrs Kumar before it expanded and love the food. We visited Thumkaa which had its own vibes and while driving along 33E we kept passing Chozhas and decided we would visit on Valentine's day for Dinner. Clearly this restaurant does a booming business with its buffet and no difference on Valentines where an a la Carte menu was offered but there was such a crowd earlier that food and staff were exhausted. Fortunately we had Deepthi who despite being on her feet for hours made sure we were aware that the palak chat which was supposed to be out came back on the menu . Also giving us great advice on the quantity of food to order. She was excellent. Now to the food which was "good"...but not anything special. The appetizes Palak Chat and Lasuni Jhinga Shrimp were better than the main course of dal fry, goat rogan ghosh (nice having bones but not much meat). Rice came with garlic naan and the rice keer was served too hot as they ran out for lunch and had to make fresh. Now the decorations were really nicely laid out for Valentines and made it feel special. As we were leaving it was crowded. Clearly this place has a following and we were told the weekend buffet is what everyone comes for. We will try the buffet one weekend to see how the food is and hope that it really is exceptional and better than the a la carte. Excellent and authentic food. Very affordable weekday lunch thali platter until 2:30 and more than generous portions. The chicken chettinadu was so flavorful and tender. The tikki masala sauce was more reminiscent of a buffalo wing flavor or more chili pepper forward? But still good. Spice level (mild and medium) were similar and just right. Also recommend the garlic naan and crispy cauliflower. Gulab jamun for dessert on the platter was a delightful treat. Samosa chat appetizer was huge; loved the crunchiness atop. Ambience is upscale and the staff is very attentive. It always appears to be very empty, so I do hope people give it a chance because it is quite good. read more

It then went down the drain More recently weekend Buffets and Tues Dosa and tiffin attracted us back. It was good till about a month ago. Now the skimping and low caliber buffet and Tues night shows a lot of skimping and at par with a McDonald's or even less. We should not compromise our authenticity for profit. I made my first visit to Chozhas this past weekend. I'm happy to report that the food provided a solid Indian meal experience. The service exceeded my expectations with friendly and attentive staff. The interior is inviting with a variety of booths and tables. We ordered Chozhas Special Chicken, Saag Paneer, Butter Chicken and Kadai Vegetable along with some Naans. The Chozhas Chicken, which is essentially chicken curry, was tasty and flavorful. The saag paneer was more authentic than many restaurants in the area. It was not full of cream, but more like how my mom would make it. The Butter chicken was also tasty. The only entree we thought was just ok was the Kadai vegetables. Probably because it paled in comparison to our other food. We ordered half the entrees mild and the other half medium-spicy. They all had the same amount of spiciness, which I would say was more milf than medium overall. I definitely enjoyed my visit and would come again. Everything was absolutely delicious and plentiful! The atmosphere is warm and welcoming. The service was excellent! We had samosas, soup (dal shorba) which was outstanding. We really enjoyed the food here. I liked how the food wasn't too spicy so that I can enjoy the mild spiciness without my mouth burning. The flan was definitely our favorite dessert with the perfect sweetness. The fish and goat curry were our favorites. I loved how the meat for the goat curry was soft and wasn't hard to chew. A very cozy place nestled in the woods of Route 33, this restaurant makes for a great date. The ambiance is nice for lunch or dinner. With outdoor seating available, you can enjoy the green views. Food is very good and flavorful. From a scale of 1 to 10, the food is a solid 7. It is good and recommended to try for the different choices the menu offers. When going to a place like this it is best to try something different rather than the standard Chicken Thikka Masala. Have the chef specials for amazing freshness and flavors. Service is very good. My kids and I went here for Mother's Day. Till this day it was our favorite Indian Restaurant. We were the first ones in and it was a while before many others did come in. The service was absolutely horrible. There was a long wait for everything that came out of the kitchen and our server was almost non-existent. We waited 20 minutes after our check arrived to pay our server who never did come over. We walked up to the register. My daughter had a $200 visa gift card and the rest cash. Our server was there and said I will be right back, I said no. This is exact change down to the penny. He thanked me and we left. Later that night my daughter got a call from our server (she made the reservation) and he told her the gift card would not go through, so she gave him the pin number and he said it still didn't work. So she paid him over the phone with her card. 2 days later she went to pick up the gift card. When she received it she looked up what was going on with it and realized that purchases were made Mother's Day night on that card that were not hers because she never used it. She called her bank and stopped payment on the $200 and then reported fraudulent purchases on the gift card. We could forgive the terrible service because the food is that good. We cannot forgive stealing. And that is what he did. He stole that gift card and lied about it. We will never go back and we will never again recommend. read more

We went for Valentines Day. Worst experience I have ever had at a restaurant. Food took forever as they were short chefs. People actually left after waiting for food for over an hour. We did get our appetizers and one entree but after waiting another hour we cancelled the rest of our food (4 entrees). Wait staff was great considering everyone was mad. The bad: Still not a good value when compared to other Indian restaurants of similar quality. Although we are not big eaters, we do look for good value for our money. Our selections were served in a small crock bowl with an overabundance of curry with literally 6 or so small pieces of the protein (lamb and chicken) each priced over $20. Comparably, another restaurant that we enjoy located in Plainsboro, serves wonderful food with enough to take home for another night. I bought goat dum Briyani for take out, it has Excellent flavor the meat was tender. I took 1 star away from it because they did not provide utensils or napkins in the take out bag. I hope they can fix that going forward, thank goodness I was staying in a hotel so I got my utensils from there. After my fiancé raved about the Tandoori chicken takeout one night, we decided to give the sit down a try. This was my first time here. To start, the food was outstanding. They were beyond accommodating to us, especially given the fact my fiancé has a food allergy. They introduced us to Fryums as an appetizer/pre dinner snack and tapioca dessert (which I unfortunately forgot the name of). I had the Chana Saag with Garlic Naan and my fiancé had the Tandoori Chicken (again)- every bit of it was phenomenal. The ambiance was warm and inviting with incredible service to match. The service alone was outstanding- everyone was friendly, accommodating, and willing to indulge us when we asked about the cuisine. Ordered the dry chilling paneer and it was excellent great depth of flavor. Ordered the chicken tikka masala and the gravy tasted like BBQ sauce. It is the worst chicken tikka masala I have had of all Indian restaurants I have been to. I'm sure other items are great as was the paneer but chicken tikka masala is such a staple it needs to be better. However prices are VERY HIGH. Service was standard nothing to comment on. My friends and I were on our way out of the city and decided to stop for a linner (late lunch/early dinner). We called ahead to make a reservation for an outdoor table, but they were not able to accommodate our request (we were led astray by the pictures of the adorable tables with umbrellas!). We sat indoors and were relieved that there were no other seated parties. In terms of safety, the tables are spaced apart and guests are required to wear a mask to enter. The staff wear masks, but often incorrectly (our server's mask only covered his mouth). We were promptly seated upon arrival. Water was brought to us and we were served papad with chutney. I opted for the tandoori gobi for my entree with a side of rice. It came out steaming and smelled wonderful, although it was not as tasty as I would have imagined. The gobi was not entirely cooked and the taste of yogurt was overpowering. I did enjoy that it came with lemon wedges and onion slices. **fair warning: The food takes 45+ minutes to make because it's made fresh. This would be great information to put on their online menu or to express via phone call instead of to write on the board that's located in the entryway.. The ambience is great-- it has a very upscale vibe. Great decorations, good music, and excellent facilities. Parking was also very easy. The Chozhas is one of the best Indian restaurants in the area with a really extensive menu! The ambiance is really nice - they have many seating options too. The Chozas can be both a casual and fancier place. The service is excellent and the waiters are very friendly and attentive. We had the cashew pakora and samosas as appetizers. Then we had the choza curry and chicken tikka masala. The chicken tikka masala was spicer than average but still very good. The tandoori chicken is unbelievable! It melts in your mouth and is incredibly juicy. We also had garlic naan which was great. You seriously can't go wrong with anything from their tandoori oven. Their biryani is definitely recommended! All the food was really fresh, I think they source a lot of it from their local farm. You could tell that the ingredients are high quality and none of the food was too oily, greasy or heavy either. I really love the food here, but the prices have gone up enough for me to consider finding a new "regular" Indian place. It's a shame because the food, service and decor are great. I would definitely choose this restaurant for a special event or a romantic dinner, but I just can't justify spending this much on take out. It's an excellent restaurant. The Chozhas is on Route 33 in a somewhat isolated location where many other businesses have failed over the years. I haven't been able to dine in, so cannot comment on the "fine dining" aspect of how they're categorized on Yelp. The food hit all the right notes with the family. The onion/spinach/mixed vegetable pakoras are a unique and somewhat spicy spin on pakoras different from how other restaurants prepare them, but are very tasty (kudos for trying a creatively different recipe and producing a great tasting menu item). The saag paneer and chicken tikka masala were prepared using great quality ingredients, and taste similar to the preparation at other quality NJ Indian restaurants. I've never seen as many spice levels at another restaurant as spice levels are further broken down based on North Indian vs South Indian vs non-Indian. My main gripe with this establishment is the price of appetizers/starters are some of them are as expensive as meals. It's not just a 20-30% price hike, but rather 50% more expensive than competitors in the area. It can be cost prohibitive to try out these menu items since they cost as much as meals. For example, the pakora appetizer I ordered was $10 whereas many places charge $5-6. The chili chicken appetizer costs $15 whereas my go-to fine Indian dining restaurant in the area charges $10 for it. I feel such pricing doesn't do much to garner a consistent casual customer base for the restaurant, especially considering the somewhat remote location. Hopefully the business re-evaluates it's pricing to be more in line with central NJ competitors. The samosas were priced a bit more reasonably, but the ones I received were quite small in size and more like mini samosas. I'll definitely visit The Chozhas for indoor dining in the future, but will likely skip appetizers/starters considering the unnecessarily high price point. read more
