They have numerous good ice cream flavors with creative combinations of sundae options. We went with the high tide which is a peanut butter lovers dream. It was peanut butter ice cream with PB sauce, chocolate sauce, and PB cups topped with whipped cream and a cherry. Additionally, we got the ice cream nachos. These included cookies and cream ice cream and oreo pieces with "nachos" of waffle cones

I'll give this place a 2 star review because it hurts to give them what I really think they deserve... I've posted 20 photos (incl menu sign boards & prices) that I took the other night when the 2 of us went in search of ice cream in Corolla that would be open on the later side (open till 10PM). All we wanted was just straight up ice cream - no sundae, no banana split, no milkshake, no samwich, no taco - just plain ol' ice cream in a cup to cap off our dinner. We've never gone out for ice cream when we're vacationing here but this time we decided to venture out. We got there and the place was PACKED. Mostly kids and teenagers - likely who walked over from Currituck Club. I get it - day or night, it's an easy and safe walk for teens who are staying in the Currituck Club gated community who want to go out and ditch their parents for an ice cream hang out. But that's really all this place has going for it imo: its location. As far as I can tell, there's nothing special about the ice cream. It's not homemade, looks like it's been sitting in the tubs for days on end AND the portion sizes are soooooo woefully small FOR THE PRICE! (I calculated from a menu/price pic from just 1 year ago that scoop prices increased almost 15%! That's obscene for the quality of ice cream this place serves!) We got the kid's cup size - yes I know, it's a kid's cup. But no excuse - it was a TEENY TINY serving. And we paid $4.50 FOR EACH ONE. It was a JOKE. The kid's cup scoop looked soooo sad and lonely in its cup. I yelled into the cup and it echo'ed back.... You get it. (See my pic.) For the adults who are spend-conscious - my recommendation is to walk or drive over to the Harris Teeter steps away and buy a couple, 2 or 3 gallons of ice cream and fixin's, syrups and toppings AND SPEND THE SAME AMOUNT AS A COUPLE SCOOPS OF ICE CREAM FROM HERE and you'll have WAYYYYY better tasting, higher quality ice cream than this place. Sad to say but true. As another reviewer aptly put it: if you have ample vacay money to blow, you'll blow a good chunk of it here for sure. Totally not worth the wait - we were in a line outside the front door. Service is slow as molasses - so don't be in a hurry. If it was real honest to goodness housemade ice cream, it STILL would have been a rip off for the portion size for what we paid. Next time will try Big Buck's Homemade Ice Cream up the street (open even later till 1030PM)...or even DQ soft serve (in the Food Lion shopping center / Monteray Plaza open till 10PM) would have been better (and cheaper) than this place. #facepalm

Good ice cream selection! Reasonable prices, per scoop. The service from the employees was top notch, very friendly and liked to strike up a conversation. Kinda small store, or could have been laid out differently, to prevent such a long line having to form outside. There are a few tables inside, and some picnic tables outside too.

After a horse tour, we "needed" ice cream. We went to The Chill Spot. It had a very long line - we took that as "it must be good." It was good and the long line moved quickly. There were many fun flavors. My family all agreed that it was great and creamy - as ice cream should be! We'll go again if we are in the neighborhood!

Cute shop and friendly staff. I liked the texture and richness of this ice cream but the flavors were a bit artificial tasting. I tried the peach ice cream which had a sharp astringent aftertaste. The black raspberry chocolate was more balanced as a flavor but melted quickly and was not as stable.

This is a cute establishment with super yummy ice cream but we couldn't help but be completely icked by the employees scooping with no gloves. It is clear that this isn't a requirement as there's no gloves anywhere. Completely unsanitary and super gross! Not to mention that causes a huge concern for people with allergies! The Cookie Monster was also great but had sooo much blue dye.

The Achilles Spot is the awesome spot. We've been twice this week and they killed it both times. The staff is super friendly and the ice cream is great. Check them out! Might be back tomorrow.

This is such a cute little ice cream spot with sooo many more options than just a scoop of ice cream. They had plentiful flavor options and some pretty cool dishes, like ice cream tacos or ice cream cookie sammies. The employees that were in there when we went in were very kind and chatty which just made the experience even better. Their stickers and tshirts are pretty cool and a nice option for anyone who wants something obx related but doesn't want a touristy tshirt. The inside of the shop is colorful and fun with lots of art work. My only complaint is that we didn't discover this place until the end of our vacation.

Local community Ice Cream spot. Have a sign asking for 5 Star reviews, but honestly can't do that. Ice cream was good, portions were okay. The service however was fast and very good. As a local spot, if I lived here - I would frequent often. Love my ice cream.

Great ice cream and great staff! We stayed in Corolla for family vaca and came here multiple nights because it was so good. The staff are so friendly and patient (despite how busy it can get!), all kids spending the summer on the island. Try the double brownie ice cream, some of the best I've had!

Went today and we were really impressed by the social distancing! Limited occupancy in their store to 20 and required masks! Staff wore masks that covered their nose and mouth and didn't touch them while we were in the store. Had clear signage restricting in store occupancy and directing customers to keep 6 feet apart. Also the ice cream was delicious and the service was great. We'll be back & SO glad this spot exists in the OBX! read more

Great little Ice Cream spot at Timbuck II in Corolla. Super nice young ladies working, who were sweet as could be to my young children. Very pleasant & helpful, not rushed & impatient like other area places we visited. I NEVER get non-chocolate ice creams.... always has to be as chocolatey as possible....but, I sampled the blueberry cheesecake ice cream and it was fantastic, so I broke my lifelong ice cream standard. My daughter got the mint cc, wife got chic peanutbutter.... all were great. read more

My husband and I recently moved to Corolla. We were pleasantly surprised to find The Chill Spot near the entrance to our neighborhood. We've been there several times and we are happy to see that Ryan and his staff are following the protocol for COVID 19, which I can't imagine is easy during the summer season. Everything about The Chill Spot is great, from the cleanliness to the friendly owner and his staff and especially the ice cream...it's delicious !! It's quickly become one of our favorite places in Corolla ! read more

First and foremost, the girls working on 4/8/21 were awesome! They were friendly, helpful, and extremely polite. The store was immaculate, and all the social distancing reminders were clearly posted. Everyone was following mask guidelines. We had a group of 7, and the staff was efficient and quick. The ice cream was great, and the milkshakes were perfect. My nieces and nephew enjoyed the candy selection too. Extra points for the bamboo straws and the music playlist. We will definitely be back the next time we visit Corolla! Thanks! read more

My boyfriend was taking pictures of the waves on the beach and the owner of The Chill Spot, Ryan, happened to be in the water surfing during. My boyfriend caught some good shots of Ryan and Ryan came up to us asking if we got some shots of him. He told my boyfriend if he sends over some shots he will treat my entire group (regardless of the number) to ice cream tonight! We are homeowners down here so this was very appreciated. We've been to The Chill Spot prior to COVID and love the ice cream, but during this time they are doing a great job adhering to social distancing, limiting their capacity in the building, requiring masks, and keeping service moving along regardless of the circumstances. Stopped in today after lunch. Definitely not bad, but nothing amazing either. Typical flavors. They did have some more interesting menu items: ice cream nachos, ice cream taco, etc, but we opted for just scoops. I would return, but nothing really worthwhile. read more

The name says it all. Very friendly owner and great place for kids (they wanted to come back again and again). The ice cream is tasty. I believe the owner says it comes from a local-ish dairy. Other places (which are fine as well) cost more and uses ice cream from national distributors. Personally, I like it when it's local especially when you are coming from out of town. read more

Walked in to the smell of waffle cones cooking. Delicious doesn't begin to describe the aroma! They have a great variety of ice cream flavors to choose from. And everyone will be able to find something to enjoy. But my daughter and I got two of their specialty sundaes. The High Tide Peanut Butter sundae was out of this world. The chocolate and peanut butter flavor was decadent and delicious! I had the Turtle sundae. Oh my ... candied pecans, caramel, chocolate sauce over praline ice cream. I was in heaven! The woman working was quick with a warm greeting and made our sundaes quickly. Indoor seating is limited for social distancing, but tables and benches outside give you ample space to enjoy your treat! read more

Many delicious options of ice cream flavours and some fantastic sounding ice cream creations, such as nachos! I am a purist, however, and went with soft serve chocolate and vanilla. It was very tasty, but not as good as the rainbow sherbet my 4 year old ordered. It worked out perfectly - she preferred mine and I preferred hers! Good service and COVID precautions were taken (6 ft apart in line, masks worn, barrier between employees and customers, and seating area closed). I really appreciated the precautions they took. read more

We came in with so many kids and the young lady at the counter was the most patient. Everyone was properly social distanced with marks on the floors and masks were required outside. They have clean outdoor seating for you to enjoy your sweet treats as well! 10/10 recommend. We will be back many times this week. read more

Great ice cream and great customer service. Lots of delicious ice cream flavors to select from at a great price. The establishment was very clean and masks were enforced. We got ice cream here twice, and while it wouldn't necessarily get 5 stars everywhere else, it was by the far the best and cheapest in the area. It was literally half the price of Big Bucks. Blueberry cheesecake and coffee were my favorites out of peach, lemon sorbet, and the "nachos". There was only one guy behind the counter, but he was fast and very friendly. read more

All the classic flavors and some unique twists (I had the Pirates' Treasure which was caramel with Oreos and M&Ms, SO YUMMY). We went in the midst of the Covid craziness and the social distancing rules were followed and were very clear in the shop (stickers on the ground to make it clear about the 6 feet). Masks were required and only a certain number of people were allowed in the store at once. Our whole group was very appreciative of their efforts! Friendly staff who seemed to have fun working there. Can't wait to go back! read more

History

Established in 2017.

Though new to 2017, The Chill Spot has ice cream roots that run deeper than this year. In 2014, Nikki bought Grammy B's Ice Cream in Corolla and started scooping ice cream and bringing smiles to vacationers from all over. Ryan worked in an ice cream shop for several years in his teens and promised himself he would one day own his own ice cream shop. He started his mobile ice cream business, Ryan's Real Fruit Ice Cream, in 2016 where he set up at events all around the Outer Banks. A mutual friend of Nikki and Ryan's introduced the two and casual small talk led to ice cream talk, which led to talk of goals and dreams, which ultimately led to a merger of the two businesses under a new name and new mindset, The Chill Spot.

Meet the Business Owner: Ryan R.

Ryan is one of the 2 young owners of The Chill Spot. He's always had a passion for scooping ice cream and bringing smiles. After working in an ice cream shop all of high school, he told himself he would one day own his own shop. He attended business school at The University of Georgia then moved to the Outer Banks after graduation. A couple years later he eventually started his own ice cream business with his business partner, Nikki. The two work well as a team and learn as they go trying to offer the best ice cream experience the Outer Banks has to offer!

It was a little icy/crunchy and to my palate had a slight freezer burn after-taste. But we had a completely different reaction to the wide selection of artwork sold at Big Bucks, all created by the girlfriend of one of the servers.
