Now…read moreput it all on the one menu, serve it up in a pub style place that looks like Paul Hogan has spewed Crocodile Dundee all over it after having a night out on too much Hawaiian tiki food. It sounds like a recipe for disaster doesn't it? Well for the first (and probably only) time in your life that's where you'd be wrong. This place is packed, even on a Sunday night in winter in the quiet, peaceful Victor Harbor. With people drinking beers at the bar, old school 70s bands playing over the radio, or live (think Wendy Matthews and Rick Price - not the impersonators), to cramming in large tables of families inside the cafe and out, it has a buzz and atmosphere that is refreshing for this town. We ate the salmon pizza with a dill and caper mayo, the meat lovers and the vegetarian. The family sized are huge and probably 1 pizza between 2 is enough. I was so incredibly impressed with the pizzas though. A crispy base with medium crust, plenty of toppings and great, simple flavours that didn't get lost in too much cheese or tomato sauce base. Service is painfully slow. You have to go up to a packed bar to order everything and when the place is busy you can expect to wait up to 30 minutes for your food. But it makes a good excuse for tearing into a tasty pizza when it arrives.

We drove to Second Valley beach with our takeaway and it was still toasty warm when we sat down to eat. They have the option of a few non-standards for a fish and chip shop such as the pizza and yiros, but still do the standard stuff well. Pineapple fritters were done properly in pancake batter rather than just deep fried - haven't seen that in ages! - and were just delicious. I'm judging this as a takeaway joint rather than a sit down cafe - the food is great, but make sure you take it to the beach as the cafe is really just a kitchen with some chairs to wait in. Although the outside seating did look okay. But seriously - beautiful beaches in every direction - why wouldn't you eat at the beach?

I had the combination yiros of chicken and lamb, it was tasty, cooked well and the ingredients were very fresh. Chips are tasty and not too salty too. The store offers quite a few good things including pizzas and other classics that I will have to try next time I am down here. Nothing is better than having some of this scrumptious food at the beach that is less than one kilometer away. The day I went there it was sunny and 23 degrees - a perfect experience.

Probably the best coffee in Victor Harbor…read more I walked in on a sleepy Thursday morning for breakfast to be greeted by warm, friendly staff. The front of the menu was warm and friendly too - they welcome American Express. You rarely get that from small business. It's usually: 3%, or a bitter 'NUP!' And the friendliness continued. No charge for soy milk. What? And they don't use So Good. They use Silk, the choice of Bar 9, Pollen, et al. I ordered the Eggs Benny. Nicely poached eggs, sautéed spinach, and ham, on sourdough. The hollandaise didn't taste house made but was zesty enough. Often when travelling to regional places you end up sampling food that tries to emulate that of the city, without quite getting there. Bavaria, while nothing groundbreaking, does a decent breakfast and a decent coffee, and sure pleased this city slicker.

This one wins over all the other places to dine in Victor for one thing, and one thing alone, the Mango Macadamia cheesecake in the McCafe. I know McDonalds is a chain. I know every single store has access to the cheesecake. What I can depend on, here, is getting a piece when I want one. For some reason, there is always Mango Macadamia cheesecake in the McCafe, whereas so many other Macca's have sold it, or don't carry it. Ok. so I can be a little bit obsessive about this particular offering. I've driven to three McDonalds chasing a slice in town. If you haven't tried it, and like you cheesecake and dessert and stuff like that, hunt down a slice, with your favoured choice of coffee, and enjoy. And remember, when you're craving it, and you can't find any, there'll be some, here, waiting. :)
