I heard about a cafe in Victor Harbor that was vegetarian. A vegetarian place in a country town? Must be pretty sure of itself.
I was recently in Victor for a brief 45 minute stop over as part of a trip on the Cockle Train. I was dying for a soy latte and something quick to eat. This vegetarian cafe I had heard about: I had to find it.
A quick google search (why, oh, why is google never quick when you need it to be?) revealed the place as The Avondale on the main drag, Ocean Street. A big sign out the front that says "VEGETARIAN" sort of gave it away. I had high hopes.
The first thing that struck me was the smell of fish being deep fried. "Ok, so this place isn't totally vegetarian. No matter". The second thing, so few vegetarian options on the menu and absolutely no vegan options. "Will they even have soy milk?" I wondered aloud.
Soy milk they did have. Vitasoy. Vegan options they can do, I was told. But a burger and chips was about as much as they could do. I didn't have enough time for this so a coffee it would be.
The coffee: I'd say 40% froth. Very weak. Very poor-quality-soy-milky. Not great at all. But hey, I was after the caffeine hit more than anything and it did wake me up.
The verdict: Probably won't return. read more
