Those reading this from outside of South Australia may not be aware of the naivety of that statement. Trying to find an up-market restaurant outside of the trendy places that opens its doors on a Tuesday, is about as frustrating as looking for a bacon sandwich in Tel Aviv on a Saturday morning - they're there, but you have to search and be willing to travel a long way. The Elliot though is reliable, it's open every night, the staff are friendly, welcoming and knowledgeable about their menu and wines. So in the end, after promising ourselves to splash out next month, we headed over there. It wasn't really a compromise, we've never had a meal there that we weren't happy about. Anyway, on to the food... We skipped entree as we tend to be two-course people and know that it's worth holding back some room for dessert here. I had the slow cooked Murraylands pork belly, pilaf rice with pepper maple glaze and the dearly beloved had Huon River Atlantic salmon fillet, rocket, blistered cherry tomato and asparagus salad, caper and dill remoulade. Both were priced reasonably at a gnat's nadger under $26. The pork belly was well cooked with a nice layer of crispy skin, the maple flavour was a good balance to the meat although my palette didn't get any pepper coming through. The rice was a little over-cooked for my taste but that's just me being picky and a generous helping of broccolini that wasn't mentioned on the menu complemented the meal well. I'm assured that the salmon was perfectly cooked as well and the kitchen were sent back two empty plates (why do so many restaurants fail to understand that bread is needed to soak up those last traces of sauce?). The tassie Dalrymple Pinot Noir (at an inoffensive price) set off the meal well and was (big gold star here) served at the right temperature. Dessert for me was Sticky Date and Ginger Pudding with butterscotch sauce and vanilla bean parfait and the chocolate brownie, ganache with vanilla bean cream for herself. I'm conflicted here - the pudding was light and tasty, the sauce and parfait were great but the ginger was so understated that it was barely discernible and I do like a date pudding to have bits of date in it. Again though, two empty plates. All in all, the Elliot is a place to add to your list of places to visit - great location, good food, reasonable prices, terrific staff. Useful to note that Friday and Saturday generally have live music - whether that's a good thing or a bad thing is your call but they do have some very good acts there - Tip: If you've not seen her, get down there one evening when Zkye (not a typo) is playing.

Between three adults and one child, we plowed through the delish tapas treats and the perfectly cooked steak with aplomb. Service was outstanding. Friendly, not too OTT, timely, discreet and open to questions/providing suggestions. By the end of the meal, I was well-fed, laughing heartily, wine-soaked like an upper-class pirate, and just about ready for a dip in the sea! Anyway, unlike some of the other pubs that we visited this one is just your stock standard country pub with your stock standard beers on tap - nothing really all that fancy in style or substance. I guess that may have something to do with Goolwa not drawing anywhere near as many tourists as some of the other towns along the south coast. As for the pub, well, as I mentioned, it wasn't anything special, just a stock standard country pub, though you don't tend to feel as out of place as you would at other places (and the bar tender is nowhere near as talkative).

I ordered Boston Bay Mussels with Tomato, Bacon and Chilli and I was truly surprised by the size of the crock pot with no less the 47 Mussels cooked to perfection(yes I counted them), my taste buds exploded with the combination of flavours that this meal contained. These Mussels are definitely on my list for the next time I return to the Corio. My wife Decided on the Lamb Shanks on a bed of Creamed mash potato, fortunately she decided to just have just the single serve (Entree size) for the meal was more the enough to fill one's hungry stomach. Again cooked to perfection. The 3 Children (Adults ) thought they would each have a schnitzel, which were so large they covered the plates and each one of them could not finish. All in all a great meal was had by all, the only fault that I could find was the variety in the salad and veggie bar, which was average, But this did not take anything away from our meals, of course it was a bit noisy in the dining room, but It was a Pub on a Saturday night! Both meals were very nice (I am used to a big bowl of soup for 9.90) and my soup was quite small and sadly was mainly pasta and not much veg. But it was very tasty as was the garlic bread. The tuna cake was again a bit expensive for what it was but again very nice. The staff are lovely if a bit 'older' I definitely felt I was in an old persons town. The service was friendly as most small town restaurants service is but a tad slow. However as we wernt in a rush we didn't have a problem.
