Extreme storm warning-not just a regular Canadian snowfall

I purchased 2 tickets to an adult cooking class as a Christmas gift for my mom. We were both very excited to go. Then a winter storm hit!!! I called 2 days prior when I heard about the incoming storm, and asked to reschedule. I was unable to reschedule and instead told to "drive safe." (our drive to Vaughn was considerable) $300 down the drain!!! They were well within their rights as their policy is to give 7 days notice to reschedule (I gave 2). But seemed very unreasonable to me! Finding 2 people to go in my place wasn't realistic, given the weather. I shouldn't have to choose between my safety and loosing $300. But I did. On the evening of our clas, environment Canada said to "consider postponing all non-essential travel." I wish I read through the Google reviews more thoroughly. Disappointing customer service. There was a really lack of listening and understanding. We are very conscious about food waste. If the ingredients were already purchased, we gladly would have picked up the day before/after and tried to recreate the meal ourselves although we weren't emailed the recipes. The exact same class also ran the following day. Just feel a lot more could have been done.

We've always wanted to take a cooking class, and last night (Apr 11 2020) we finally did, but not in the traditional sense. With all the self isolating as a result of the current (as of this writing) COVID-19 situation, The Chef Upstairs is offering online classes and we signed up for the "Rome at Home" class. The event was conducted via online video meeting software which meant that we weren't simply watching Chef Julian put together the meal, but we were able to interact with him AND the other participants, making it the next best thing to an in-person cooking class. The menu consisted of a Rustic Caesar Salad, Pasta Carbonara, and Balsamic macerated strawberries with ice cream for dessert. There were a couple of ingredients that I normally don't use/like. Dijon mustard in the salad dressing, and eggplant in the main course. However, this IS a cooking class, and I am participating to try new things. Let me just say that both of those items brought each dish to a whole new level for me. Even the balsamic vinegar, which I have traditionally used only in salads and roasted vegetables, was something that I never would have thought to use in a dessert. Again, I was not disappointed. In all, my family (four of us) were not disappointed in any of the dishes. All were flavourful and with Chef Julian's patient, and easy-to-follow instruction, turned out perfectly. This is something we will definitely do again, and when the COVID-19 restrictions are over, we are looking forward to participating in a class in person. Thank you Chef Julian and The Chef Upstairs team for a wonderful in-home experience during these interesting times!

More affordable than the other marcaron making classes that I've seen at other places. The instructor was very informative and the class was taught well. There was also handouts with the recipe and notes. The instructor was very friendly and chatted with us as well. He shared a lot of tips and tricks! The class was quite long and we made 2 flavours. Each step was guided and completely hands on. The kitchen was professional and very clean, each person was set up with everything we needed and there was no clean up for us at all, they took care of everything! The macarons we made turned out successful! And between 4 people we had about 60 macarons to take home. They also provided boxes for us. I would love to take another class here and can't recommend it enough!

My boyfriend and I signed up for the sakura roll cake class, which to be honest is I don't think is a beginner class. The techniques I felt were pretty advanced and my goodness, folding is not as easy as it looks. However! Our instructor Baron was so helpful, patient, informative and would teach us little tricks/tips/hacks to make the baking process more successful. This cooking studio is a hidden gem. The classroom environment was small, intimate, friendly and really totally worth the cost.(the roll cake course was $99) They provide you all the tools, and you get a box to take home your whole roll cake. Mine surprisingly did not look like a pile of disaster thanks to clear instructions and some help. And even better? My cake tasted legit. When I mean legit, it was almost like bakery quality. I mean they really set you up for success which is good, but you a learn a lot too! Now I have a whole roll cake to eat for breakfast/lunch/dinner. I need to eat and appreciate my masterpiece. I highly recommend checking out their website, they have so many diverse courses to take. They have pastries, cakes, cooking and even a pho class! Located in Markham, it's a trek, but totally worth a fun date or even to go with a friend or two. Honestly, I had the best time and you get a wonderful learning experience. I think I might take a stab at the cooking classes next time!

Our group of 4 friends (2 males, 2 females) decided to take a class called "Cookie Basket' as a prelude to the upcoming holidays. This course is designed to teach individuals how to make various types of treats (cookies) using the tried and true "hands on" approach. They provide aprons and disposable gloves and you get right in there..mixing ingredients, cutting cookies, decorating, etc. The facilitator of this particular class - Pastry Chef Jennifer McConnell was fantastic..she certainly kept the group entertained for the 3 hours we were there. The class was fairly large (there were 17 of us.....and no, we weren't the only guys) and this presented the only issue. Sometimes seeing things up close was problematic, however, they have installed a large tv that shows a live feed of the island the chef worked at, plus they have installed various work stations throughout the room (that our chef worked at) Prices vary per class - this particular one was $40 per person and lasted just under 3 hours. They even conduct fun classes for children and will rent the room out for private functions (birthday parties, work team building events, etc). Upcoming classes include Szechuan, Szechuan; Hot and Spicy (Thai) and more holiday themed events. Will I go back...definitely. It was a great way to spend a rainy afternoon and meet a cross section of people, plus learn some new skills in a fun way.
