My partner and I enjoyed The Castle Restaurant in Bude so much that we went there twice during our weeklong stay in Cornwall in August 2011.
We first experienced a romantic evening meal at the perfect table, overlooking the water through two French doors that opened onto a patio, then returned for Sunday lunch at the same table. The food was wonderfully prepared, particularly the soups, which I have to say were nothing short of spectacular. The true standout, however, was the fish and chips, which consisted of pollock so fresh it was caught that same morning by the chef's father in the Bude harbour. It was utterly divine. The prices are very reasonable as well.
Situated inside Sir Goldsworthy Gurney's former home, The Castle Restaurant's decor is simple yet elegant. Chalkboards display the day's specials while the open kitchen gives the restaurant a cosy feel. The staff was very accommodating and polite. The manager was actually the one who honoured our request for the same table at Sunday lunch, for which we were truly thankful considering how many people the restaurant was serving that afternoon.
Parking is across the street from the restaurant in a metered car park that is free after 6:00 p.m.
My only complaint would be the desserts, which were good, but not great. Still, we had two very pleasant experiences at The Castle, and would highly recommend it if you are in the area. read more
