Sitting on the village green in the very quaint village of Dirleton near Edinburgh, the Castle Inn offered a reasonable menu and sheltered beer garden. Although the day was sunny and bright, the Inn seemed very dark - not a problem though as we wanted to get into the sun out back.
Prices aren't cheap-a burger that costs more than a tenner is going to have to go some and I don't think this one did. The soup was fairly small and cold and I wasn't convinced about the service. My plate was snapped away before I'd weighed up the options of finishing my chips and watched astonished as a member of staff asked a table in the outer fringes of the garden to come and collect their food from the patio area - presumably they couldn't be bothered walking to them.
All that said though, the pub is well positioned and the beer garden is a great wee sun trap. The beer is cold and much needed after a wander around the castle opposite. read more
