The Fisherman Pie, which was Haddock, Smoked Haddock and Salmon in a Creamy Leek & Chive Sauce, topped with Mash Potato and Isle of mull Cheddar, was delicious. Even the Seasonal Vegetables, which were served with the pie was really good. On top of that, they had a nice long list of ciders to select from and they had the Kopparberg Strawberry & Lime, which is one of my favorites.

On entering it is a spacious and cosy looking bar that is definitely suited for tourists with a collection of beer mats almost being used as wallpaper to cover most of the free space behind the bar, some of which I had never even heard of! The decor and feel to the sitting area itself is traditional with a modern fusion, little tweaks like old spirit bottles (JD mainly) being used as candle holders are excellent to the vibe of the place and really let you settle happily in to one of the booths and take the surroundings in. We went in here because my better half was feeling hungry (I was saving myself for the North Berwick Fry which is just next door to the Ship Inn, in hindsight I should have eaten here) and decided to pop in here for a drink & a bit of lunch/dinner, we definitely weren't disappointed. A chicken and bacon burger was ordered and a chicken and bacon burger it was. Where the chicken that this chicken breast came from I don't know but it was definitely doing some serious weightlifting and bulking up. It was MASSIVE, in all it's chickeny beauty I found it hard to resist taking a huge bite out of the burger. Long stoy short, I ended up taking a huge bite out of the burger. The chicken was beautifully juicy for general pub grub and the bacon was lovely, sweet but slightly salted which gelled all the flavours of the breaded chicken and the toasted roll together. Thinking about it now, I'm getting hungry again. Every time I have a pub burger, the side salad always lets it down, every time, it's like the bars expect people not to eat it, but not this bar. The salad was crisp and fresh, served up with a deliciously sweet vinaigrette that was perfect for dipping a wee bit of the roll in. The spirit measures were 35ml and the guest ales on offer covered breweries such as Innis & Gunn and The Inveralmond Brewery (who do beers such as Lia Fail and Ossian) which justified the bar being about 60-70p more expensive than the others we visited.

The majority of the pub seems to be held up with varnished wood which seems to be the lay of the land for most of North Berwick (definitely not a bad thing for any locals reading this) The tables were also wooden paired up with tan leather couches, making this feel like an old "gentlemen only" pub, which I suppose was the rule for most pubs years ago but the Auld House definitely seems to have held on to these traits a little more robustly. There is a full bar available, very well laid out with beers such as Belhaven Black stout and what seems to be the North Berwick man's favourite pint, McEwan's 70 shilling. My pint was served beautifully, nice, clean and at a nice temperature for a real beer. There is only one thing I can fault this bar on. As we entered the pub we were served by a very friendly female who was very pleasant, half way through our visit a gentleman came in with a child who turned out to be the females partner, without a word they both seemed to have swapped shifts, the female pulling a pint straight away and the gent walking behind the bar with the child on one arm. Whenever a customer wasn't being served he seemed to be supping at a pint of beer himself, which I found very strange. Other than this one thing that wasn't necessarily a problem for any of the punters as the child turned out to be a lovely and very interactive little girl who was all smiles and laughs.

Reverse psychology perhaps? No handpulls at the bar but at least one good keg beer if you're not after a lager or Guinness.

My plate was snapped away before I'd weighed up the options of finishing my chips and watched astonished as a member of staff asked a table in the outer fringes of the garden to come and collect their food from the patio area - presumably they couldn't be bothered walking to them. All that said though, the pub is well positioned and the beer garden is a great wee sun trap. The beer is cold and much needed after a wander around the castle opposite.

For a pint of McEwans 70 shilling & a JD and diet coke it was £6 which is about the price of tap water in some Edinburgh bars and clubs. At first the girl behind the bar didn't seem too keen on as "tourists" but that soon changed and what got off to a bit of a shaky start ended up being quite a wee visit.

Our main reason for choosing this place was the fact that it was located a little way out of the town centre (but still in easy walking distance), and that their menu looked good on the seafood front, as they have a connection with the Lobster Shack on the town pier. We stayed for a couple of nights on a weekend getaway. Be warned, the hotel is popular with golfers so you need to book up well in advance. I'm more of the Mark Twain "a good walk spoiled" school of thought when it comes to golf, but apparently it's quite the thing around North Berwick. Our room was on the top floor at the front, and was spacious and well-appointed with all the usual accoutrements. Being on the street side, there was a fair bit of traffic noise, but then we did have the windows wide open as it was so hot (yes, Scotland has been known to get quite warm at times!). The en-suite was large, and had a deep bath with a good shower - although the shower curtain did seem overly long and you couldn't avoid standing on it if it was inside the bath. Breakfast was pretty epic. We had smoked salmon with scrambled egg the first day, the salmon being wrapped round the eggs to make a cylindrical pancake. On the second day I had the full veggie, with sausage, haggis, poached eggs, beans, mushrooms and tattie scone - again all artfully arranged in a pile. Our one evening meal was of course based around the lobster option. It's not cheap, but we both splurged on the whole lobster at £39.95. I had avocado sushi to start, which in retrospect was probably a mistake as it disappeared in 3 bites. Herself went for the 1/2 kilo of West Coast rope-grown mussels, which seemed a better choice. I was impressed to see a vegan option of Key Lime pie on the dessert menu, which was just the right lightness to top off the lobster. There were one or two very minor issues, both with room maintenance and with service so I'm only giving it four stars; but it's a family-run hotel and they are all very dedicated to providing a good experience, which it certainly was. There is a warm homely atmosphere to the place and the staff were all very friendly despite how busy it was. We both really enjoyed our stay and would happily stay again.

Started with their house made chicken liver with oat crackers - yumm and very generous portion of the liver pate- asked for more bread to spread the creamy pate on it !! Gotta love pate done right! Entrees were amazing . Lamb was tender served on a heaping serving of mashed potatoes with a yummy gravy. This was husbands favorite meal so far - his eyes, nose ( smelled divine) and stomach thank you ! My battered haddock was very good! Huge and I say HUGE haddock was battered and fried to perfection. The fries were good too- just didn't have much room for them. The best part ??? I think we were the only non-locals in the joint! The place is adjoins the Victoria Inn so that's a nice surprise. The town is small and everything closes by 5pm so needless to say we didn't get to explore much. But town looked quaint and historical brick buildings everywhere !
