You have to go here just for the decor and all the quirky paraphernalia and stuffed animals! And the roaring fire was perfect.

Lovely dinner with my family last week, they were staying in Gullane and we all fancied something relaxed and nearby so no one had to drive. This was the perfect choice, great atmosphere with a roaring open fire and plenty of locals with their canine friends. Food was good, just what we wanted, pub style and big portions. My steak pie was delicious! Decor is great, lots of golfing memorabilia and antiques. I look forward to going back after a long walk down at Gullane bents

Waterside Bistro - Great waterside setting with seating outside by the river.

We visited The Waterside last year and were quite impressed so decided to make another visit and…read moresee if things had changed for, either, the better or the worse. First thing, driving we noticed Scottish Tourist Board signs directing the way. Wow. Bistro is on the map. On arrival there was a carpark at the rear, something we didn't find last year. So many cars, would we get a table? The reception was second to none with a choice of a table in the bar, if we didn't mind waiting ten minutes or, immediately in the Bistro. We took the second option. Shown to the table in this very busy restaurant. An order for drinks was taken at that point, no 'someone will be with you in a moment'. The drinks arrived promptly with the menu. 'No rush, I'll be back in your own time'. Impressive. Bread arrived, delicious fresh bread and a bottle of water, and that without asking. After about ten minutes he came back asking if we were ready and then mentioning the specials of the day. There were two starters and two main courses on offer but our ears only heard lobster bisque and freshly caught lobster. Impossible not to order. The bisque was subtle but extremely flavoursome. The lobster arrived, in the style of thermidor, on a bed of salad. That lobster was extremely fresh as the sea could still be tasted. We were totally full and when a dessert was offered we asked for a short break. At this restaurant there was never any rush. When ready we ordered a 'simple' three scoops of ice cream and two spoons from the lovely young lady serving the desserts. It arrived in a very tall glass with whipped creams and biscuits. The server had a smile on her face. I think she made this dessert special. All in all a wonderful experience. Glad we tried The Waterside again. Thank you to the Maitre d' who received us, he is a 'good choice' (that's an in joke between us). All the staff who serve and we mustn't forget the chef and his helpers in the kitchen. The Waterside is a MUST visit if you are in the area but, I feel, with that quality of food and service very soon a reservation will need to be made. Thank you one and all.

Attentive and charming service, but the best part is the namesake of the restaurant, the waterside view! I enjoyed the mushroom, pea, asparagus risotto, and my companions savored the pork loin, sea bass, mackerel, and prawns. A magical place!

The Fisherman Pie, which was Haddock, Smoked Haddock and Salmon in a Creamy Leek & Chive Sauce, topped with Mash Potato and Isle of mull Cheddar, was delicious. Even the Seasonal Vegetables, which were served with the pie was really good. On top of that, they had a nice long list of ciders to select from and they had the Kopparberg Strawberry & Lime, which is one of my favorites.

On entering it is a spacious and cosy looking bar that is definitely suited for tourists with a collection of beer mats almost being used as wallpaper to cover most of the free space behind the bar, some of which I had never even heard of! The decor and feel to the sitting area itself is traditional with a modern fusion, little tweaks like old spirit bottles (JD mainly) being used as candle holders are excellent to the vibe of the place and really let you settle happily in to one of the booths and take the surroundings in. We went in here because my better half was feeling hungry (I was saving myself for the North Berwick Fry which is just next door to the Ship Inn, in hindsight I should have eaten here) and decided to pop in here for a drink & a bit of lunch/dinner, we definitely weren't disappointed. A chicken and bacon burger was ordered and a chicken and bacon burger it was. Where the chicken that this chicken breast came from I don't know but it was definitely doing some serious weightlifting and bulking up. It was MASSIVE, in all it's chickeny beauty I found it hard to resist taking a huge bite out of the burger. Long stoy short, I ended up taking a huge bite out of the burger. The chicken was beautifully juicy for general pub grub and the bacon was lovely, sweet but slightly salted which gelled all the flavours of the breaded chicken and the toasted roll together. Thinking about it now, I'm getting hungry again. Every time I have a pub burger, the side salad always lets it down, every time, it's like the bars expect people not to eat it, but not this bar. The salad was crisp and fresh, served up with a deliciously sweet vinaigrette that was perfect for dipping a wee bit of the roll in. The spirit measures were 35ml and the guest ales on offer covered breweries such as Innis & Gunn and The Inveralmond Brewery (who do beers such as Lia Fail and Ossian) which justified the bar being about 60-70p more expensive than the others we visited.

New menus daily, wow...chef is really good at his job, fresh bright food, locally sourced; find out more amazing passionate food combos from their website. We tried Haddock and Salmon dishes, they were supported by variations of potatoes, blanched asparagus, but the chef satisfied the buttery hollandaise sauce complimenting the salmon wasn't up to standards had more brought out, not sure why he didn't notice this before it was presented, but hey it's his creation so why grump it was still devine. Not content with the main my friend who lives out of hotels due to business connections managed to easily scoff profiteroles with chocolate sauce and a latte. Desert menu chalkboard is in their other dinning room, so has to be brought through and placed nearby to read. It was after 8pm but was unsure if the desserts change then? Service was top notch and worth it's double AA rating, bringing Ducks to the forefront of luxury dining in East Lothian. Around £40 for two mains, a dessert, coffee and two beers, didn't break the bank as I wasn't paying all the better! Certainly, I will go back to Ducks but next year, and possibly sooner to their Edinburgh venue to see how it compares?

Still, there are precious few places in this neck of the woods that can do food of this standard, so don't be put off. For starters, I had the scallops (without the bacon and black pudding), which were so succulent that they practically melted in the mouth. That was followed by an evening special of halibut, which arrived with two round slices of what looked like cheese on top, but which turned out to be a slightly spiced butter concoction. Yowza! It also came with samphire, one of my favourite greens. I was pretty full after that, but manfully struggled on to the dark chocolate torte (sans ice cream), which was a perfect finishing touch to the meal. Herself opted for the cheeseboard, which had a nice selection of local cheeses (but not too much) with grapes and water crackers. Full marks for the cuisine, slightly less for decor and service.
