I must admit, I was a bit hesitant to enter the business, given a reviewer's unwelcoming experience. Lucky for me, my experience was quite the opposite! We were politely greeted upon entering, and leisurely browsed the store without any issues. The chocolate covered graham crackers, and fudge were so fresh, and rich in chocolatey flavor. Do NOT go to Candyman. There are better, safer, nicer candy stores around. RUDE STAFFER YELLED AT MY WIFE AND FOLLOWED HER OUTSIDE!! Never again will we give our business to Candyman in Kennebunkport. You might want to go to one of the other many better candy stores in the area instead. A tall long haired male staffer crossed the line and was RUDE and THREATENING to my petite senior wife. His behavior was totally unacceptable. I can't believe any business would allow their employee to act so poorly, let alone in front of customers. He yelled at my wife that I was "parked" in front of their store and refused her service. Then, the bully came out to yell and threaten her while she sat in the car. In fact - I was standing across the public street, not in front of the store - on the other side of the public street with my car running while my wife ran into the store to grab some candy. He then came out to yell at her. Note when I told him to speak to me outside the store (at least I was not going to make a scene like he was) he complied and wasn't threatening to a man. It's apparently only women that this Candy Man employee can bully and be rude to. His behavior was beyond unacceptable and he should be fired. What kind of business would condone employees that are rude and threatening to customers??? We will never ever buy from Candyman again. There was so much to choose from at this cute little candy store in a charming little coastal community. We choose the yummy salt water taffy, and they had some very interesting choices. One of my kids chose chicken and waffles taffy. I'm not sure about that, but the kids had fun with the flavors. The fudge was a little dry, and not quite as good as I was expecting. In season, they salt-water taffy is great! Out of season, very stale as I recently discovered. A waste of money to be honest, it was so stale. I'm writing this hoping the person who works there reads it and improves her customer skills; she is incredibly rude& very dismissive. I've been in several times and each time, met with utter rudeness and when I ask a question, she says, she has no idea. If she can't be more welcoming and at least pleasant, you shouldn't work front facing with customers. As others have stated, "horribly unpleasant" really sums it up. Its a store in a great location, they should try and do a lot better. read more

Enormous candy selection! We love visiting local candy shops, particularly to taste, and then purchase, fudge. NO samples here...? We've never encountered a place that doesn't give samples of fudge. Then I asked to have the pieces cut into smaller segments which they wouldn't do either! The pieces were fairly small but we wanted smaller pieces of more flavors. Pretty bizarre. We stop at the Candy Man on every visit to KPT (VERY often), making sure that we stop for my requisite piece of penucci. December 1st, just after an early birthday dinner at the Boathouse, all I wanted was a piece of fudge for dessert. We arrived at The Candy Man just as Valerie was turning out the lights and locking up. As I mentioned, we stop there often. The Candy Man in The Port is a timeless treasure in my life... been going since I was little! Great selection of fudge - probably my favorite way to spend an extra few dollars. They do a great job of sectioning off the store - do you like gummies then stay here, like taffy go there etc. Kuddos on store set up. The people who work here are always happy (maybe always on a sugar high? - no judgement there). They give great advice when picking a fudge. The spot is a little tiny but hey who doesn't enjoy a little elbow rubbing while filling a bag of candy with gummy rings and chocolate covered pretzels. read more

It's a candy shop, so everything is the same as any other candy shop. The only variable are employees. I just went to this place, on 4/23/2021, and the guy working was the most miserable person I've ever met in a store. Ask a question and get a mumbled response, after asking twice because the first one was ignored. Buy your candy at a convenience store and save yourself from being insulted by such a depressing experience. We were passing through Kennebunkport on the way to Bar Harbor and stopped for lunch. After lunch we strolled around the square to stretch our legs before getting back in the car and came across this store. Once inside we couldn't help ourselves - just had to get a bag of salt water taffy and some fudge. Had I known how fabulous both would be, I would have made an effort to buy more! The taffy was soft and delicious - haven't had such good taffy in a long time. The fudge was amazing - they had penuche which many places do not carry. The display case with many varieties and flavors of fudge is very inviting. Bought $13.00 worth of fudge. Took it home and discovered I had purchased a box of inedible rocks. It couldn't be cut, even with a sharp carving knife. This fudge had to be weeks old, there is no way the clerk couldn't have known, simply by touching it. My advice is to ask for a sample taste before buying. If they decline, walk away and save your money. read more

My daughter and I walked in the store this afternoon - literally the only customers in the store. There were three people working- not one of them even said hello or welcome. Candy was decent, fudge was middle to sub-par. But the worst part: rude, unhelpful staff. For background: I'm an easy going person who doesn't complain much, and I don't get offended easily. I only wrote this review because I was taken aback by how rude she was, at one point even having to stop HERSELF from spitting rude things at me - I just expected more from a CANDY store which is supposed to be a happy place (haha). I am hoping the owners see this to know how poorly she represents their business!! The woman behind the counter was rude, dismissive, and couldn't answer basic questions without an attitude. I asked her how much something was, her response "I don't know " (emphasize on the "I", like I -the customer- am supposed to know). I asked her who makes the candy and fudge, her flat response while she also refused to look up from her checkbook: "The owners." And finally, I went to the counter and let her know that I wanted to browse the truffles first before paying. Well, this set her off. "Well *scoff* you just let ME know when YOU're ready. Do you even know what size box you want??" She went back to doing her checkbook. I browsed around for a minute, then when she turned around and I said "OK I'm ready", she scoffed loudly again and said "Well you were SUPPOSED to tell me when you were - NEVERMIND. [slams down her checkbook] How many do you want [picks up both sized boxes and waves them at me like I'm an idiot]. I tried to laugh it off, but she continued to throw herself around until the transaction was finished, complete with tossing the pen and my receipt across the counter at me. I was grossed out by the flies in the fudge and chocolate case. The front door was wide open (no screen door) and when I tried to shut it was told to leave the door open. The fudge case doors were open and I couldn't even stomach looking into the case with the flies in it. The case with the chocolate covered strawberries had fruit flies in it! This review was flagged last time and for whatever reason I was flagged as a shill?? this is the only review I've ever written so maybe thats why. Anyways not a shill - I am a real customer. I have had the same kinda of experience as Lindsay M above - except for several times now. They make the best salt water taffy I have ever tasted. When I first moved out to Kennebunk my parents helped move me and they actually found the store while I was at work. They love the fudge and taffy so I frequent the store to send them back surprise treats every so often. Like I said, love the candy - but the workers/owners are jerks. It feels like they do not want you there - like you're intruding on them. One time I was even yelled at for using the "wrong" scale. I thought she was joking so I laughed it off but she did not return the smile. I guess will continue to go there because the product is so good but I can only imagine how much better this business could thrive with a better attitude. I think they can get away with this because their main customer base is probably tourists that will only come once or twice so they don't need to build a returning customer base. Hopefully they read these reviews and lose the grinch attitude - I can totally see them not wanting to give a single candy out for free for Halloween. UPDATE: I recently found out they do not make their own salt water taffy like they told me. I found the exact same taffy from the name on the taffy wrapper. We are loyal customers at the Candy Man and have been for many years. The store is quaint, charming , immaculate and the homemade chocolates are awesome. We always get great service and workers are nice and accomadating, which must be a challenge knowing how busy the store gets. We have gone to the Candy Man on Halloween of 2008, and the store put on a Costume Contest for children - awarding gift certificates for the three best costumes. We recommend the Candy Man as the best store in Maine! read more

If you like taffy, I'd recommend it. They have a big variety in flavors (like frosted cupcake!), and the price ($9/lb) seemed to be about the going rate. The majority of the store is just bulk of commercially available product (like Lego candy, Jelly Belly). As for their chocolate display....I liked the dark chocolate covered marshmallow squares, which one of the girls swore were handmade for them in another candy shop in town. The milk chocolate ones all tasted stale, like old Peeps. And the chocolate tasted like the Wilton melts one buys in the store - cheap. And for the LOVE OF GOD, stay away from the chocolate dipped Devil Dogs/Twinkies!! I bought one, bit into it, and the cake part was dry, crumbly, pale....exactly as if it had been sitting out for days before dipping, then left out for longer. Totally blech! When I came back later that week (I bought taffy for co-worker presents), I told the girl behind the counter about it. She was totally unimpressed.
