Great little pub, has live music on various Fridays through the month and a dj on a Saturday.

Heard good things recently so took my wife at the weekend. The place is in the former Madagascan…read moreGin Palace premises, and is run by Su (of Canal Bar fame). The place is pretty much same as the MGP days, but the welcome was good. As it was raceday Saturday at 8.30pm, we half-expected to be turned away but they had a table within 30 mins - and it was ready as they promised. Menu will be familiar to punters at Newbury's Canal Bar, but the menu's fairly simple and extremely affordable at £5 for a starter and £8 a typical main. All the staples are there - Pad thai, red/yellow/green curry, etc, but the starters are fairly limited. Food was quick, showing the kitchen was onto the menu, although I do sometimes wonder how hard Thai is to get wrong (perhaps another thread). Staff keeping it together on a raucous night - attentive but not in your face. Red curry was fantastically hot and moreish, so one for chilli fans. But slightly limited menu (a bit more proper seafood would be nice).

Steps from the train station, its a destination for anyone making their way out of Reading or Paddington. Su, the proprietor, slaved for years in the back of the Canal Bar preparing Thai meals for anyone that wandered into that pub. Now, she's got her own restaurant and it is fantastic! Try the Laab for a different kind of salad taste followed by "something special" off the menu, that included duck the night I was there.

The front door is interesting an has an interesting history with the building dating back to 1637. I was greeted when I walked upstairs and given a menu. I ordered Veggie Spring Rolls (Popia Tod), the Tom Ka with chicken and Pad See-Ew Noodles with chicken. It didn't take long to get my order and it was all still hot when I arrived back at my hotel. They also wrap it all quite tight so nothing spills out. The Spring Rolls weren't what I was expecting. I thought they were going to be fresh spring rolls but they are fried; it does say on the menu but I didn't read that part. It came with a plum sauce but would have been nicer with some hot mustard. Unfortunately, they do not do fresh spring rolls. The Tom Ka soup was quite good. It's a bit heavier than most Tom Ka soups I've had and I would have preferred it to be a bit spicy. The Pad See-Ew was fantastic. They serve a very generous portion and it's just delicious! And like the soup, it would be nice if it was a little spicy. I'm sure they can make it spicy if you ask them and I wish I would have asked. The food is very fresh and delicious and I would absolutely come back here.
