Luckily the decor was interesting enough to keep us, although that was the first warning. We had two cocktails, possibly the first that had ever been served there...certainly the first the waitress had ever made. The starter was some very peppery and over-cooked prawn crackers accompanied with a pretty average satay which arrived suspiciously less than 2 minutes after ordering. Main was possibly the worst weeping tiger (sliced steak and fragrant dip) I have had, the quality of meat was so low even the memory of the smell still makes me want to hurl. The experience was slightly saved by the duck in Grand Mariner which gained them a star. Some of the waitresses were trying really hard, I think the service issues (slow, forgetting drinks, plates etc.) were the fault of more senior front of house who seemed preoccupied with micro-managing already competent subordinates rather than leading by example. Needless to say, this is not a good example of Thai cooking for this lovely little town.

I ordered Veggie Spring Rolls (Popia Tod), the Tom Ka with chicken and Pad See-Ew Noodles with chicken. It didn't take long to get my order and it was all still hot when I arrived back at my hotel. They also wrap it all quite tight so nothing spills out. The Spring Rolls weren't what I was expecting. I thought they were going to be fresh spring rolls but they are fried; it does say on the menu but I didn't read that part. It came with a plum sauce but would have been nicer with some hot mustard. Unfortunately, they do not do fresh spring rolls. The Tom Ka soup was quite good. It's a bit heavier than most Tom Ka soups I've had and I would have preferred it to be a bit spicy. The Pad See-Ew was fantastic. They serve a very generous portion and it's just delicious! And like the soup, it would be nice if it was a little spicy. I'm sure they can make it spicy if you ask them and I wish I would have asked. The food is very fresh and delicious and I would absolutely come back here.

Next up was Thai Prawn curry with Jasmine rice and I hardly muttered a word to my partner other than mouthing ummmm's and 'tasty'! There were lots of nice touches - hot plates to keep the food warm, limes slices with our water, a freshness to everything. I love Indian food but it can often be heavy and this was refreshingly light. The staff was extremely pleasant and the bathrooms were clean. We ended up with enough food to take a good bit home and enjoy for lunch tomorrow. Bravo Shaan!
