    Bowl of Mac and Cheese
    Terri B.

After a day of hiking in Joshua Tree National Park, we were looking for a light lunch, and found The Cactus in Twentynine Palms. The restaurant is quite large and has a pool table. The bar area is in the front and dining in the back. Since we were here in the middle of the afternoon during the week, there was no one in the back, a few seats were taken at the bar, so we grabbed a high top table in the bar area, ordered drinks and checked out the appetizers. I went with mac and cheese, and Mr. B had the shrimp quesadilla. My bowl of mac and cheese was the perfect size for a light lunch. The pasta was cooked well, and there was plenty of gooey cheese, it really hit the spot. The shrimp quesadilla was large, stuffed with shrimp and he loved every bite. Service was good, parking in the back was easy and the place is cool.

A couple of friends and I found The Cactus on a recent trip to Joshua Tree and Twentynine Palms. There's a bar up front and dining space in the back and it's obviously the sort of place with a group of dedicated regulars. One of the regulars greeted us when we entered, made sure we had menus, pointed us to the dining area, and told us he'd send the owner back for our orders. We had a great conversation with the owner when he came to take our orders. He'd owned another restaurant that he had to close during the pandemic and brought the customer favorites from the old menu to his new bar. All the food we had was fresh, filling, and tasty. Definitely stop by if you're in the area!

So we came out of the park looking for a little late lunch and found this unexpected surprise. They have a really interesting Middle Eastern menu. We had the euros, which was delicious though it's not really homemade meat, but it still was fantastic. They have Coke products which if you read, my reviews is important to me. The fries were a very generous portion that you can split And well seasoned. Great beer, selection, and liquor. This is probably a fun place to watch a football game with the locals. Totally great stop in 29 palms

The best Cobb salad I have ever had?!?!

Wow. Why am I having the best Cobb salad I've ever had at a bar in 29 palms!!!! On our way into Joshua tree we decided to make a lunch stop here and it's been the absolute height of our trip. When we stopped by at around 1 on a Saturday and the place is alive with regulars. It was a pleasure chatting with patrons and waiting on our food. The food is the absolutely highlight. We ordered a Cobb salad, quesadillas, chili fries, and brisket. The serving size is large and colossal. The server actually told us no one ever finishes these giant portion sizes. The food is so tasty too. Fresh ingredients cooked to absolute perfection. We are only passing through town but it gave us glimpse into what this place is and means to the community. I feel so lucky to have stopped by. It gave us a delicious (and super filling and reasonably priced) meal and a great sense of how great the locals are here. Dog friendly too! We got our pup a plate of grilled chicken with no seasoning and he loved it of course! :)

Thank heavens for the late night kitchen at this hoppin spot! Needed dinner with a late arrival time and was excited to find some healthy, fresh options. Even cooler is that this was def a hot spot bar/dance spot with fresh food options. Called about an hour before picking up and spoke to a really lovely gal on the phone. When I arrived it took about 5 mins to pay and get the food so that's how you know it was fresh. Price point was good for a salad and it was chalk full of yummy extras like beets, olives and a generous portion of chicken. Don't hesitate to pop in anytime but especially if you need dinner @ midnight!

    A happy customer!

My colleague and I were working in town for the week and went here twice. The food is excellent, the drinks were on point, dining area and bar very clean and staff were inviting and very attentive! They also have two pool tables so you can school your boys. Awesome bar and grill. A+++++.

Delicious. Only picture because we ate everything before taking pictures. Lol.

It's certainly a dive bar in the desert. Lots of young marines getting loud and rowdy on a Friday night.

Hello, First off, I…read morehave to say that we absolutely love your place! We have been customers for several years. I feel like we need to bring this to your attention. Me and my husband, along with the a group of friends were in your place of business last Saturday night to watch Red Rabbit, who we love and follow. Around 12 or 1230 we noticed some commotion at the bar. Much to our surprise, your "new manager" was causing quite the issue with his boyfriend. Earlier in the night, he seemed to be actually managing the bar, however, at this time he was what seemed to be belligerent drunk. This went on for some time, even continuing out to the patio with customers trying to end the chaos. He was cussing, yelling at his boyfriend and demanding the Bartender serve him another drink. Once his boyfriend, was able to get him to leave, we even witnessed him punching a chair on his way out of the bar! I don't know the owners of this bar. I think they would like to know what happens when they are not there. This place used to be a great place to hang out with family and friends. This is not the first time we've witnessed drunk behavior from this manager. I have to say,, your Bar has a couple really good bartenders. And that is a reason we continue to come back. If this is the way the new vibe is in this bar, we will find another place to hang out. I truly hope that it gets handled. It is not fair to the customers, nor the rest of your staff.

We chatted with our waitress about the upcoming events being hosted such as country night, karaoke night etc. Sounds like a lot of fun. The high desert needs places like this available to hang out in rather than having to travel up and down the hill just to get out for the night. Pool table, darts, and even board games available!

I wanted to clink glasses with locals who could tell me about the fun and flaw of growing up in a small town. And I figured that local dive bars would allow me to check off my hopes. Plus, the word on the street was that the Virginian was a local haunt for marines. I wanted to party with marines. Spoiler alert: I did--and it added an extra layer of crisp and pop to my night. On my first night, I went there, by my lonesome, and I was surprised to know that it was a cash-only establishment. This worked to my favor because I did not want to drink too much and then go to my hotel. I did not aim to get a DUI, I just wanted to have fun. When I go alone to a bar, I have a primary objective: to find friends to drink with and talk to. Especially on vacation, I wanted to find an experience that would lead me to a "hangover-like night." I know it might be impossible, for sure, but that does not impede me from trying. And when one tries, one might be successful. I was. I went to put my name on the chalkboard to eventually play pool. I gathered around the others who were waiting for pool. I quickly made friends with a marine. He was not the marine I had my eye on, but he was the one who entertained my advances. Soon after, we went to the bar to get him a drink. One for me too. We were getting shots. The wait was long-loving for it gave him and me the opportunity to connect. Let's call him Lalo. He told me about life as a marine. I told him about my life. He told me that he had found a girl--now his fiancée--on an app called Chispa. Basically, a dating app for Latinx people. I did not think he had found a fiancée, but rather a person he could fall in love with. He was young, you see, and love for marriage seems to be a long game best played by those who are at least in their mid-twenties. Regardless, I will root for those two crazy kids. As we drank and grew closer, Lalo and I just became friendlier and friendlier, which led to friendly hugs. On one particular long and gripping hug, I uttered, "This feels so nice, Lalo." His reply was, "I am glad, Frankie, I am glad." My chosen name is Frankie. His words comforted me because they sounded sincere, and words I had not heard before, within this context. Here in the middle of a desert, I had found comfort in the arms of a marine. I never thought I would, but like I said, I tried, and I was happy to be successful. Soon one of his friends came and requested to leave. Lalo did. I was irked. I wanted him to stay with me for a few more drinks at the Virginian. It did not happen. I got lucky, but my luck did not extend the night. But I did get lucky the next night. I went again after my day at Joshua Tree. It was a Saturday night. The place was full but not so full that it was overwhelming. I saw three young men sitting. There was a stool next to one. They had the build and essence of marines. So, I sat next to one. And again, I made a quick friend. He was from South Dakota. I can't remember his name, so let's call him James. James introduced me to his two friends. One was from the same town I grew up in. Happy coincidence. James and I spoke. He was kind enough to get me a glass of water. The service of the armed forces rings high and small. They were taking shots, one after the other, without restraint. One of James's friends stepped outside and puked. The bartender reprimanded them. He gave them a mop to clean their own mess. Wow, this would not happen in an LA bar, I thought. The marines were put to work. James took the mop and finished for his friend. The bartender inspected the mess and green-lit for them to go. Again, I wanted a marine to stay for my own selfish needs. He did not. He grew and gave me a smile as he went. This bar is a local haunt, but great for visitors. So, if you go to Joshua Tree or a nearby town, don't be shy and stop in here for local color. I got to see small-town vibes at play. It was great, and I met my own personal goal of partying with marines. The Virginian may not be sophisticated, but it is a place to have fun and engage in a way that feels homey yet exciting. Please remember it is cash only but it has ATMs. If you use credit cards, to get by at times, then skip this place.
