They don't have elevators, so you will have to take your luggage up via the stairs. The room was small. It is dated, but clean and appropriate for one night or a quick stop. The room stays pretty cool with the windows open, but if you close the windows, it can get hot.

I rarely leave negative reviews, but I felt this was worth mentioning. I had been traveling for over a day and a half and was extremely exhausted. I politely asked the front desk if there was anywhere I could sit and rest my eyes for a few minutes until check-in. The staff member immediately said no and made it clear that resting or sleeping anywhere in the lobby was not allowed. The interaction felt dismissive and not very friendly, and I noticed a similar tone when he was speaking with other guests. Another issue was the bathroom setup. I stayed on the second floor and there were no women's restrooms on that floor, so I had to go up and down the stairs each time I needed to use the bathroom. After check-in, I finally fell asleep because I was so exhausted, but I was suddenly woken up by loud pounding on my door( not a gentle knock )The staff member said he had made a mistake and placed me in the wrong room. I understand mistakes happen -- I've stayed in hostels all over the world -- but the way it was handled felt disruptive. As I was getting up to move rooms, he suddenly said I could just stay where I was. I had originally booked a four-bed female dorm because I hoped to meet other travelers, so having the room to myself wasn't really what I expected-but ultimately, I was grateful that I did have the room to myself so that was one positive He said he would make it up to me with a free breakfast token, but the breakfast ended up being very minimal (bread, cheese, yogurt, cucumber, and cereal). Overall, the atmosphere just didn't feel very welcoming. If you're looking for something friendlier with a better vibe, I would recommend Abbey Court Hostel instead -- the staff there are VERY kind, the common areas are lively- and they won't kick you out if you need to rest your eyes for 30 minutes and it feels much more inviting for travelers. They have a locked room as well to store your luggage if you don't have a room yet. Breakfast is served on the bottom floor also. The buffet breakfast was not it. Very minimal options and kind of depressing of what actually was available. The elevators were pretty sketchy. One of them always seemed to work fine but the other one we could never get to go up from the lobby. They didn't allow you to take the stairs to go up which I thought was weird. We were staying on floor 2 so it was annoying to have to wait for a working elevator every time. The beds in the room were fine. Typical hostel bed and they provided us with a pillow, blanket, and towel. The shower in the bathroom in the room was fine but the toilet didn't flush so we always had to go to the community bathroom down the hall. Not the end of the world but just frustrating at times. Best part about this place was the location. There were a couple restaurants and coffee shops nearby as well as convenience stores like a Tesco express around the corner. The Jameson distillery is literally right around the corner and you can get a discount for the Jameson tasting tour if you tell them you are staying at the Generator. It was also very close to temple bar!

The awesome thing was no one else stayed in the room with us! We had a huge 8 bunk room with our own bathroom for 4 days. The last day we had a guy show up as we were leaving but besides that it was all privacy. The accommodations were clean and in good condition. The staff was very friendly and able to answer all questions. We went on a pub crawl through the hostel and it was one of the funnest events of our trip. All of the other guests were super friendly and we had a blast with everyone. We were the only Americans as well so it was cool meeting lots of people from other countries. The name of the hostel isn't being used in vain either. It is one block away from the Guinness storehouse and brewery! This place was awesome and it was only a stones throw away! I recommend this place to anyone wanting to stay in a cheap, clean place and meet tons of new, interesting people from all over the world!

If…read moreyou arrive early they allow you to leave your luggage but it's not free, even for paying guest. Larger lockers are 4€ + 1€ per hour while small lockers are 3€ + 1€ per hour. I can understand charging non-paying but I'm already paying you almost double what I could have paid for a private room at several hotels on River Liffey. Didn't bring a towel? They charge for that too! 4€ for your stay. I was in an eight person dorm and the pods get so hot it's almost suffocating in there and this was in October. I can't imagine being in there during the summer. My pod was 70*F (21*C) when I went to bed around 2200 each night. I brought my own fan but if you didn't bring one you can also borrow one from the front desk for a fee of course (why would it be free?). The pods have no outlets but there's two old fashioned USB ports so bring your adapters since most everything is USB-C now. Want to take a shower? The water is suppose to stay on for 15 seconds but I was lucky if it stayed on for 5 seconds. Would you expect anything else from a "hostel" that charges for literally everything? Quiet hours? Good luck trying to sleep while all the drunks come in and out of the room at all hours of the night and the girl decides she needs to blow dry her hair for 30 minutes at one in the morning. Oh and the fire alarm will go off at least twice at random hours during the night. The annoying light comes on when someone sets off the motion sensor which is completely unnecessary because the ambient light from outside makes it already visible enough. Want to wash your hands after using the loo? Either dry your hands on your clothes or use toilet paper, no hand towels provided. Want to use the WiFi? It's as slow as 1997 AOL Dial Up and nonexistent in your pod. Want to cook your own food while you're at the HOSTEL? Nope because they took their kitchen out in 2019 and replaced it with a terrible bar that's more expensive than restaurants on Grafton Street. Want to store your coffee creamer in the fridge while you're at the HOSTEL? Nope can't do that either because they also removed those! Want to sit down at a table outside the bar to eat and it's dirty? Don't bother asking the front desk, they'll tell you to clean it yourself. My bad, I didn't know I had been hired! The front desk staff was so rude I thought they were joking at first but nope! In the end, this place is NOT a "hostel," It's a cheap hotel masquerading as a "hostel." Take your money and run as fast as you can away from this place towards River Liffey and a find a place to stay down there that wont scam you.

I had an unsettling experience at this hostel and will NOT recommend it--especially for SOLO FEMALE…read moretravelers. While the reception staff was friendly and did switch my room when I asked, they ultimately did not care at all about my stolen belongings, nor did they offer any real support or reimbursement. I locked up everything with my own padlock I purchased and brought with me (they don't provide one,) but in the two minutes I left my makeup bag out while using the bathroom, it was stolen. It contained over €150 in cash and special, gifted makeup--my only valuable item left out for literally one minute. I immediately reported it, but the staff just shrugged it off. No effort was made to investigate, no CCTV (which I understand in the rooms, but still--zero security otherwise), and management's response boiled down to "we're not responsible." I get that hostels can't be accountable for everything, but the complete lack of concern, even after I explained the situation, was really frustrating--especially as a college student who can't just afford to lose that much money. Additionally, I had an extremely uncomfortable encounter with a male guest in my dorm who persistently stared at me, repeatedly asked invasive questions, really had no shame in approaching me, and even physically blocked me from leaving the room to the point where I was quite scared. While I was able to move to a female dorm (which I strongly recommend for any solo female travelers), the experience left me feeling unsafe and the staff said they would 'investigate' without any tangible steps proposed. I STRONGLY advise doing your research before booking here. If you stay, lock up EVERYTHING, don't leave anything valuable out for even one minute, and if you're a woman traveling solo, book the female-only dorm. Oh and wait until prices are the usual 15-20 euros- anything above is a ripoff!!! Will NOT stay here again.

Laundry facility is terrible - dryers stop working but still uses your money. Took 2 hours to dry a…read moresmall load in the "staff" dryer. They lock you out of the laundry room 3x day when the kitchen is closed even though the laundry room door says it's open all day. No shelves in the showers or dorms so everything goes on the floor. Mold in the showers. No curtains in the dorms so no privacy. Rooms are stifling hot and arguments about keeping windows open for airflow happened. They change the gate code every Tuesday but neglected to tell me so there was a bit of panic when I got back late Tuesday and the gate wasn't working. Not a great area of the city so not a place you want to be stuck outside at night. The breakfast was bread with 2 types of jam and 3 kinds of cereal. Their photos show desks and TVs and water kettles in the dorms but maybe that's just the private rooms - didn't see that in the dorm at all. For the price, this was an awful place. I wouldn't complain if it had been €20/night for the 16 mixed dorm, but for €40/night I expect clean showers, a place to put my shampoo and soap, and the ability to move my laundry when the laundry room says it's open.

No lockers in our room (they said they're in the process of adding them), but instead there's a storage closet at reception. Towels are 2 euro from reception. There's a community laundry room and a nice big kitchen with free breakfast every morning. Free wifi in the building and paid computers in the lobby. 24-hour reception desk with friendly and helpful staff. They'll help you with recommendations and transportation and set up an airport shuttle for you if you realize at the last minute that your Ryanair flight leaves too early for the regular airport bus :) It's a busy central area with plenty of street noise and people coming in at late hours, so if you're a light sleeper bring some headphones. Overall a fantastic place to stay in central Dublin on a budget.

You can easily take the AirCoach from the Airport (buy roundtrip in advance!) and it drops you off just a 2 minute walk away. It took me a second to find it because I kept walking past the huge sign, but once you see it, it can't be missed. It's a charming red and black building, right next to a little restaurant. Again, the location couldn't be more perfect, its within walking distance to everything you want to do, and close enough to transit options if you need to go a bit outside the main city center. Now, once you go in, they have free wifi, computers and printing capabilities onsite (for a nominal 1 to 2 euros fee), luggage storage and organized events throughout the week (the hostel pub crawl was awesome!). They even have a free courtesy Skype phone! How cool is that? They offer an enormous kitchen where you can cook to your heart's desire if you'd like, fridge space to store your groceries and a small lounge/dining area. Washer & dryer onsite. But, all this wouldn't be the same if it wasn't thanks to the wonderful, friendly staff there. I stayed there for 2 nights, was assisted by 3 different staff members, and they were all beyond helpful and so pleasant (even when I asked them a million questions everyday!). I'd certainly stay here again if I happen to be in the Dublin area, and recommend it to anyone looking for a great hostel. Thanks guys (and thank you hostelworld.com!)! My trip didn't go as planned; I ended up in Dublin a day later than expected (I sent them an email to let them know, and they were very gracious. I had to pay for that missed night, but I knew that ahead and confirmed in my message that I just wanted to confirm my second night.) When I checked in, I received a warm welcome and some basic help to get me started on a fast race to try to find a place to live. The room I booked had room for 4 people (mixed), and three of us made it there for the night. The bathroom was en-suite, and all was clean and cheerful. Well-laundered, comfortable linens are provided, and you can rent a towel if you don't bring your own. Downstairs, the (slow but cheap to rent) computers are still there, you can pay for the use of laundry, and you can arrange to use a guitar or leave your luggage for the day. All of this is done through the front desk. The kitchen areas are very open, and when I was there, people used them extensively. People can label and keep food in 2 dedicated refrigerators, and if they have something leftover, there is a spot in one 'frige for food to be shared/taken. Need milk for the free coffee/tea/hot chocolate (Cadbury's) available all day? Help yourself-there's a dedicated spot for that, too. There's a nice mix of people who stay at this hostel, which has an arrangement with a local language school. Therefore, some people were staying long-term and knew a little more about the city, and some people were just passing through. Dinner times and evenings in the lounge/dining areas were casual and very friendly. Due to my delay in getting to Ireland, I'd picked up a couple of novels (I know, how old-fashioned!) that I'd read, and so I took advantage of the book swap case to leave a few and take a new one. It's touches like the bookcase, the open but tidy atmosphere, and the great staff that make a difference here, I believe. I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again, and in fact, if my niece visits, I'll try to convince her to stay here for a night or two just for a good experience. Getting there from the airport: I took the #16 bus, which stops a block or less from the hostel and at under 3 euro, saves about 20 euro over taking a taxi.

My philosophy when it comes to travel is to find cheap accommodation, eat on a budget, but splurge on the sightseeing tours! The place is located near Grafton Street, the fashionable 'village quarter' in the heart of the city of Dublin. Temple bar is within walking distance and the area is surrounded by numerous cultural, historical and entertainment attractions. The hostel is contained in a group of old Georgian Buildings which is kinda cool. However, the hallway does not have any elevators and feels a little claustrophobic, as there are a lot of stairs and doors to get to your room. This place is okay and it is safe enough to keep the crazy leprechauns outside. There are also inexpensive restaurants and coffee shops next door and an Internet cafe around the corner to keep me connected. It's a decent, clean hostel, the staff were very friendly and the luggage storage facility is extremely handy. Keep in mind, this is a hostel not a hotel, but it's good value for your money.

The room was small, the tv didn't work and the bunk beds looked like army barracks. But, I really liked it because it was clean and smelled clean. The whole facility is quirky and laid our in a strange way but again very clean and some parts were very new.. like new tile flooring. They have an covered outdoor enclosed patio in the facility which is great for smokers. They have lockers outside the rooms which is a bit of a pain but at least they are provided. It felt really secure and many of the guests seemed to be staying for longer than the 3 days I was there. The kitchen was always in use and the common room, with working tv, was usually inhabited. All the staff were friendly and helpful, even though they were not the young hip hostel types. It is located in the Georgian area of Dublin near all the night clubs ( not the temple bar area where the hen/stag nights all hang.) It was about 10 minute walk to Trinity College, 5 mins to a hop on hop off tour and only about 15 mins from the river. There are lots of busses tho and the 16A nearby goes direct to and from the airport.. Would like to say it is quiet but my room specifically was above a 24 chipee that was bustling from about 2-5am. Other rooms are away from any noise and the street. Even tho.. I would recommend it.

There's a lot of space and very nicely situated within Temple Bar. The balcony view from my room was nice too. I was even able to catch the wifi from the kitchen. They had clean rooms and a clean kitchen. It did have one downside - the bathroom need a vent and more towels to clean up water on the ground. Other than that, it was a pleasant stay. I would recommend this place.

With 24-hour front desk service, coded locks for safety, lots of areas to lounge with fellow travellers, a lovely open kitchen (with plenty of bread for toasting), plus it's central Temple Bar location putting you minutes away from almost everything the City Centre has to offer -makes Barnacles a top spot for adventurers with a taste for city life.
