We went to the bull tonight as a treat. As we drove past with the window open the wonderful smell actually made us turn around instead of carrying on to Reading.
The service was great, friendly, helpful staff. And the seating area was comfortable and cosy.
I had the pate to start and the chicken, bacon and goats cheese for main. They were both very nice, thou the side order of salad appeared to have been floating on olive oil, not dressed with it.
My husband had the garlic mushrooms to start and the chicken caesar salad as a main.
This is were there was a problem! I tucked in to my meal and it was wonderful. I gave my hubby some of my chicken to try and then he asked me what caesar salad usually contained.
Now ever caesar I have ever had has contained leaves, anchovies in some form or other, parmesan and croutons with chicken, plus a creamy dressing.
This had no visible dressing, no parmesan and a VERY strong taste of fish. Not anchovies, which have a rich, salty depth, but something very fishy, like tuna or mackrell. We mentioned this to the waitress, who took it back and came back to say the chef had tasted it and that was how it should be! They offered to make a salad with plain chicken and the regular dressing (in my experience that consists mostly of oil)by this stage hubby was put off it all by the lingering taste of mackrell.
We asked for the bill and they had put the caesar salad on it. They did remove it when I pointed out that is was sent back because it was inedible.
All in all quit a disappointing visit, which is a shame as we only live a mile away and it would have been nice to have found a new option nearby. read more
