Ooooh, what a lovely new kid on the concept shop block! This full-service shop not only has an adorable corner café full of light, cheer and scrumptious looking treats (didn't taste anything during my visit) that would be my HQ if I lived nearby, but it's got two floors of well-selected fashion labels from France and the UK (Kenzo, Christoph Lemaire, Carven, etc..), super photo books, shoes, accessories and even really awesome ceramics. All in all, a lot of edible and inedible eye candy under one roof. The guys behind the place are super friendly, not at all like the cooler than thou dudes and dudettes that mill about blankly at Colette. What I really liked most about the space was the downstairs, lounge-like level with comfy vintage chairs, low ceilings and dark carpeting. Made me feel like I was in a cool kids chill out hideaway from the 70s. While I didn't find anything that visit that I wanted to splurge on (prices are not cheap), I definitely plan on making this a new stop in my North Marais walkabouts, if not at least to grab a coffee and a snack at the sun-filled café. read more

I headed to Paris with a list of 4-5 'modern' coffee shops to try, but found all but one closed for Christmas. What a bummer! I'd booked before they posted their holiday dates, so couldn't be helped I guess, but luckily The Broken Arm made up for it. Paris can be truly abysmal for coffee. The choice seems to be horribly extracted espresso or a ridiculously foamed construction they call cafe 'creme'! Truly the stuff of nightmares. So I was a bit desperate by my third day and took the metro here specially to get my fix. I jumped off at the sexily clad Arts et Métiers. It's then a short and pleasant enough walk to a very nice traditional Paris square which the shop over-looks. I had no interest in the trendy clothes shop section that other reviewers have mentioned, so went straight to the counter to order a little Noisette from the pleasant gentleman. He spoke good Anglaise, which helped an ignorant pre-morning coffee pleb like me muchly! The menu for food is fairly short but it was only breakfast I needed anyway, so no problem. I ordered a nice lemon cake and the house granola. The Noisette went down a treat, kick-starting my day with its short caffeine fueled synapsis bang! The cake was decent sized, moist and flavoursome. The granola, man that was so good but maybe a bit on the small side. There's a layer of Greek Yoghurt, a mightily fresh flavoured granola and carefully match-sticked fresh apple atop. Just what I needed. So the vibe is laid-back hip, but less hipster affectation and attitude and more of a clean essential minimalism and politeness about it. The clientele was quite a mixed bag of local strollers and visiting fashionista types, with a wide range of ages amongst the 10 or so folks present mid-morning. Maybe it needs more seats/tables, as a few couples looked in and went away again as no suitable seats spare. It has wifi, papers, pour-overs, nice teas, etc. I next ordered a flat white (well, I ordered a café crème, but that's just Broken Arm code for flat white). Enjoyed this even more. The blend is local from Café Lomi, a custom blend I believe, and has a mellow, very drinkable way about it without the 'trendy' over acidity you get in many similar UK places. I liked it a lot. More my style of coffee. All in I could have stayed longer but didn't want to take space from others. This is clearly a popular place to drop by and so as with similar sparsely seated places you can feel a bit rushed to move on before you actually want to - I almost dropped it a star for that reason, but decided that as there was no push for me to go from staff, perhaps I should not penalise their minimal design choice. read more

I love both the cafe and the shop! The shop: The employees here are the friendliest! The store carries the latest Y3 sneakers to Loewe and Vetements as well as rare fashion and art books. They have both a main level section and a downstairs. If there is something specific you're looking and you can't find it, sometimes they will have it in the back. The cafe: The cafe is wonderful and I love coming here several times a week. This is really a rare thing in Paris--to return to a place so often. The lunch menu is incredible and changes about twice per week (you can see what they offer on their website under food menu). The items are so fresh and prepared beautifully. They also have a permanent Tartine menu of either salmon or avocado for 8€ which are available during nonlunch hours. The coffee and juices here are also perfect. It's usually run by a long haired boy and girl with a small kitchen team in the back. Service isn't friendly or mean but it's obvious they work hard. Food comes out quickly, too! I often come here during lunch or late afternoon on weekdays and it is not busy at all. No wifi isn't a problem because if they offered it, people would seriously stay all day. This place really is worth visiting even if you aren't in the area. In addition to all of this, they have pastries and cookies available daily. A very trendy cafe turned concept store for a different coffee experience. The coffee was really good and the celebrated purple ombre cheesecake was also a winner. There wasn't any space inside so we had to sit outside which wasn't a problem at all seeing as it is opposite a very pretty square tucked away on a quiet street. A very light, airy and trendy vibe. The only thing we found slightly strange was the jolted service where every coffee seemed to come out five minutes after one another and arrived much later than the cakes. read more

Good food with interesting combinations. I had a grilled pumpkin salad with burrata, and my friend had a grilled eggplant sandwich on gorgeous focaccia bread. I also had a pretty tasty croissant. The space is nice and airy (attached to a trendy, Opening Ceremony-esque concept store). One downside: the tables are very, very close together, so a lot of bumping and shuffling any time the waitress wants to get through or someone has to go to the bathroom. Two important things: 1. The clothing store has wi-fi but the café itself does NOT! I used 'orange' wifi as that's my phone service, but no café wi-fi is available. 2. The café is not really labeled, I only knew from a small decal that it was The Broken Arm. Rather hidden. I liked my time in the café, cute atmosphere, good cookies. They let me stay there to study as long as I wanted. Cons would be not much space (so not a good idea during busy hours) and pricey menu. To stay within ten euros I avoided real menu items. It was okay, but I don't understand the hype. Saw a lot of Americans there, too. Not a very Parisian spot, it would seem. read more

I just walked out of this location after sitting down waiting to be served. I came here because a friend recommended me to so I had high expectations. The location is great and situated next door to a retail store. I sat down looking for an outlet to do work. They didn't have one. By the time the server arrived. I asked if he had one and told me no as if I should've known not to do work here? He had a smirk on his face. Then I was just about to order food but instead ordered an espresso first. He told me, 'no'. I was stunned. I couldn't order espresso from a cafe? A business stating it serves coffee? I decided not to proceed with my ordering and asked why I couldn't have just an espresso. Trendy, hyper-blogged coffee bar doing very good lattes and serving thick slices of excellent loaf cakes by Emperor Norton: black sesame pear, apple cardamom. The indoor seating area is narrow but has high ceilings and tall windows looking out on a square. As a grace, this place has one of the nicest cafe bathrooms in the city, surprisingly spacious with a large square ceramic washbasin one would happily have as a kitchen sink, two types of Aesop hand soap. The lion's share of space goes to the boutique with high-end designer preppy wear and a small self-conscious selection of accoutrements. A friend and I stopped by to grab an espresso and a cappuccino since the establishment looked quaint, laid back and was right next to a bike rental station. To be fair, I'll only comment on the coffee and service as they were the only 2 elements we experienced. As a disclaimer, I'm a native French speaker. My friend asked for an espresso and I was about to order a cappuccino when I realized that it wasn't on the menu. The closest thing was a café crème. When I asked the employee behind the counter if this was their cappuccino, he shrugged and looked uncertain. Eventually, he told me that it was after I asked, is it or isn't it a cappuccino. We sat outside and the drinks arrived. My cappuccino had big uneven bubbles on the surface, with a very poor attempt at latte art. Very thin on the palate, with not even a millimeter of frothed milk. It was an espresso with overheated milk. Oh, did I mention that it was overextracted? I brought the cup back in, politely told them that this was not a proper cappuccino as there was only a mist of foam and I asked for another cup. The second cup was brought outside and it passed as an acceptable drink, slightly better than what can be had at a coffee chain. I was told that another barista had made it and was told that since different clients had different concepts of what a cappuccino is, they hadn't been sure what to make me and that some "cappuccinos" are made with milk, others with cream. Nonsense. Going back in to pay, there was not a word of apology, nor a single question as to how the second drink was. And obviously no attempt on their part on offering the drink on the house. Cinsidering that they charge the same prices as a proper espresso bar... I was very disappointed at the service, at their lack of acknowledgement that there had been a mistake. I won't discredit the pleasant trendy atmosphere or their pastries as I haven't tried them, but I would avoid The Broken Arm for palatable coffee. Out of respect, I will not name where one can get an excellent cup of espresso or cappuccino, but there is an excellent expresso bar in the neighborhood. read more

Coming from Melbourne where coffee drinking is a serious business and expectations are high I had been disappointed with the cafés of Paris. However a bit of research found a new breed of cafe that values the beans, the machines and the barista skills. The Broken Arm is one of the best we have tried with the coffee a rich chocolatey flavour with the distinctiveness of the particular daily blend coming through. Their food is tasty with delicious lunches and a small selection of cakes and slices. Set in a beautiful square of The Marais this is a haven where you feel like lingering for ages. read more
