This is a great little pub which somehow manages to squeeze in a wide selection of real ales, some…read moreinexpensive, hearty food, and a dart board! There are two bars, one of which is the sporting area and holds the telly and dart board and is kitted out in dark wood throughout. The other bar is comfier with cushioned chairs and stools, lots of beer paraphernalia on the walls, there is also a real fire which is extremely welcoming on a cold winters afternoon. In the summer you can use the beer garden at the rear which is surprisingly large given the location. It is worth noting that at lunchtime, food is served noon until two, but its best not to get there too late. The food is uber-traditional, from excellent soup and sandwiches with home-cooked ham to more substantial dishes such as lasagne, and just about everything comes with excellent chips. As mentioned above the beer is varied and is also kept exceptionally well in my opinion. There is normally a choice of around five real beers on tap, ranging from a porter to much lighter choices, plus a couple of lagers. All in all, the world would be a better place if all pubs where like the Red Lion!

As a former student at Cambridge, we would make the trek to White Horse Inn for warm greetings and delicious food regularly. While it's undergone renovations since I was settled there, it maintains the traditional vibes of a British inn with its original charm & old tavern details. At this Inn, you can book a stay, or just drop in for a bite. The owners are still welcoming and ready to serve up a pint. What may surprise visitors expecting traditional pub food is the traditional Thai cuisine that makes up the menu. But stay with me even if you were expecting to read about traditional pub goodness because the menu and food was delicious! It hit the spot after a few hours drive through the English countryside. It was also filled with locals enjoying an early dinner by the fireside. It's common knowledge when in London, Cambridge, or surrounding areas, you find the closest Indian restaurant and enjoy the next 2-3 hours of food bliss. I can say the same for Thai cuisine at The White Horse Inn. We ordered the drunken noodles and some amazing, authentic curries (and of course, a pint of Guinness). It was a lot of food, served up in British portions that can rival what we're accustomed to in America. We took leftovers to our VRBO and they kept us satiated for days. If you find yourself meandering across the British countryside and start feeling peckish, this is an excellent stop on your way in or out of Cambridge (an absolute must visit if you're visiting the UK) Just go. She told us that they are not taking orders for the next 30 mins, then proceed to walk away no explanation after that. Sooooo rude!!!! She said to wait for 15 mins then hand us the menu upon my colleague request. After waiting for 1hr and 30mins and finishing our drinks we decided to just leave. We only stayed for one drink and sat at the bar, but I loved the historical feel of the interior, the selection of British ales, and the friendly bartender. They have a wood fired pizza oven, so they do a variety of pizzas, as well as a traditional Sunday roast and other elevated pub fare. I'm told they completely renovated the interior in the last year or so to reduce the drinking area and increase the restaurant dining-in area. I did not try the food while I was there, but from what I see on their instagram, it looks classy and delicious. They also do a lot of events throughout the year, including live music and a big multi-day beer festival in the summer.

It's got strange live music, a pool table, a beer garden, free newspapers, a small but decent selection of beers, seating on the street, bar billiards (sometimes) and... thousands of pigs. That's right - this dark but warm little pub is brimful of random pig toys, pig posters and pig sculptures. It adds a unique atmosphere to an already well-known atmospheric pub. Being only about 20 houses away, you can trust me that this is a true local gem. After 5 on most nights you'll find this place packed with drinkers who can't be bothered to go home just yet or catch the train home to the villages. Even if it's near-freezing out you'll still see us taking our beers out and sitting on the grass by the BBC next door so that the smokers can smoke away. And on a hot summer night - it's just perfect. No need to go home until I get thrown out.
