This place has great baked goods. I got a croissant and a sourdough today and they were both awesome. I'd put the croissant on par with a French bakery, which is nice to have in your town. I'm not sure if they are mostly a commercial bakery that is sometimes open to the public, but the oven there is massive and what you'd expect for a good bakery. The sandwiches are also good. I like the BLT and chicken salad ones. They usually take around 5-10 minutes to make them, but they are fresh. My only nitpick are the hours. I kind of wish they had a bread vending machine for when they aren't open. read more

Get there at 9am when they open and they are still warm and gooey. Also love the trail mix cookies, really delicious. And coffee, their nitro coffee; very smooth. I decided to pop in around opening for a breakfast sandwich. I'd never gone early in the morning and had only bought bread previously. There were three people in line before me waiting for it to open and the line grew to at least 12ish before they opened (slightly after 9am). At the door, a staff member explained it was max 4 in the store at a time and this is a good policy if enforced. It's not written on the door and as I was waiting for my breakfast sandwich other customers were completely ignoring the max 4 rule and it was a small space so I felt uneasy with people crowding me and having 7 customers in the store. They have a lot of breads (obviously) freshly baked that smelled amazing. They also have a lot of treats and a few breakfast (and later lunch) sandwiches. I learned while waiting that they were recently featured on television so that could explain the long line. The line went fast and I ordered a trail mix cookie (five stars on that - it was delicious) and the egg and cheese breakfast sandwich. I had a fairly longish wait to receive the sandwich compared to places like bagel shops that get that stuff out to you super fast. The sandwich was very disappointing, especially for the hefty price of $7.99. I did ask for it without dijon sauce and I'm sure that made a small difference but what I received was a burnt bread (French grilled) with way overcooked and dry egg on one plain side with burnt bacon on a nice cheese. Pretty sloppy and very overcooked on everything. It was not worth the price, not even close. I would skip their breakfast sandwiches again, not go if there were a line like I faced and probably just buy a cookie if I return in the future. read more

YES!!!!!! Freshly baked bread (and pastries) right in Wakefield Center (Corner of Main and Richardson). Breads are nice and big and reasonably priced at $3.50 each. Looks like they now range from $3.50 to $4.25. Purchased a French and a Maine Grains Wheat and my only complaint is that they are both so delicious I could easily eat both of them in their entirety. I really hope that this business makes it in this location as the area was really lacking a place to purchase freshly baked breads prior to their arrival. I have tried to visit daily since they opened. They are closed on Monday's. read more

I had high hopes for an excellent bakery nearby and decided to finally check out the Break Shop in Wakefield as a relative was coming over for breakfast. I ordered blueberry muffins and chocolate "croissants." The muffins were so dry and the "croissants" were terrible. Very little chocolate, not buttery, layered or crisp. We threw them away. A waste of money. And the price for these lousy breakfast items was so expensive. It's very difficult to believe they still do not have air conditioning in the summer considering the prices. Maybe the bread is good. Definitely skip the breakfast items. read more

I have been refraining from writing a review for a while, given that I really want a local place such as this one to succeed, but yet another disappointing visit today has "pushed me over the edge". My daughter wanted a snack and very excited to try their cinnamon buns. After checking on their website, I thought it would be safe to assume they are open after 9am today (despite never knowing whether they open at 8, 8:30, 9:00 and what the product availability be at any given time). As of today (1/31/21), their website still displays a note about them being closed the week between Christmas and NYE. (see attached picture). However, after heading over earlier, there was a note on the door saying they are currently on vacation. How hard is it to update the website and not have a month-old statement on it, especially given how wildly their hours fluctuate in general (partially due to the pandemic)? Speaking of the pandemic, several months into it (the last time I was there), they were still selling their oversized, 1/2 lb. rolls (which they call "bread") in paper bags that only cover three quarters of the "bread". Slicing is not an option, product availability and hours vary wildly as mentioned above and prices are astronomically high for what the products actually are. Sorry to say it, but I am just tired of being disappointed by this place in various ways. No reason to ever go there when there is a place like Iggy's Bread around. read more

The Bread Shop is an unassuming little bakery and eatery that consistently turns out excellent yummy baked goods and sandwiches both sweet and savory. We are totally addicted to their blueberry muffins. For those of us who remember, the Bread Shop's muffins are better than the legendary ones at Jordan Marsh (the long-held gold standard)! In fact, their blueberry muffins are so good that I call ahead to reserve me two to hold for me until I can get there. And they do so happily. They sell out quickly. Their breads, cookies and sandwiches are made with great care and artistry. I'm looking forward to cooler weather to try their soups. They've gotta be delicious. Terrible customer service. We have always loved going here for breakfast but after today never again! My husband ordered something's over the phone and then I called ordered a few more things to be added to the order. After waiting for the food my husband checked the bag and something was missing that he ordered. He spoke with the staff and the woman told him that he didn't order it when I know he did. She then began yelling at him and swearing and told him she didn't need his business. She then told him he should have ordered the day before if he wanted something special. We wanted a chocolate croissant which they always have. I understand it's Mother's Day but they didn't advertise on Facebook or instagram stating to order the day before. Too bad because we really liked it there but they lost some customers. Here we are trying to support local businesses during this terrible time but they don't deserve it! read more

Love this place! Came for sandwiches just after they opened and was very pleased with the quality and freshness. I am a bread snob and was so impressed the the quality of the crumb on my sandwich I took home a loaf of the sourdough. Since the bread is fresh, it lasts much longer and is a good value for my at home toast and sandwiches. I've been back many times for lunch and bread. I finally gave in today and split the giant cinnamon roll with my partner. The roll reminds me of the Scandinavian style sweet rolls my mother bakes; light dough with not too much sugar or icing. I love it because it doesn't overwhelm with cloying sweetness. Now to see who want to buy me a 'The Breadshop' sweatshirt! read more

I've been to the bread shop a couple times and the food/ selection is great. The reason I'm giving 3 stars is because every time I go in there the staff seems stressed because of the poor treatment I have seen. The women who works there in the glasses (I believe she is the manager) seems to always be in a bad mood. I've seen her talk down to, belittle and overall just be rude to staff which makes it an uncomfortable environment. Great food...manager needs to work on respect read more

My girlfriend and I went to the Bread Shop for lunch looking for meatless options for Lent. I ordered the Tuna Melt and my girlfriend got the Mediterranean Veggie... And we absolutely love it! The Tuna Melt has fresh tuna instead of the canned stuff which is awesome. The French bread is wicked yummy - crunchy on the outside and soft in the inside. Altogether I was in heaven! Definitely my favorite so far! The Mediterranean Veggie also was awesome! My girlfriend loved the olive spread and the roasted peppers in them. She mentioned that she loved how the peppers weren't skimmpy but rather substantial. Overall great choice on her side! We will definitely come back. Stopped by today and bought a loaf of Cinnamon Swirl and one loaf of spicy bread with green olives. The latter may be made with rye flour but whatever it is, is outstanding; huge hit at home. Ordered a loaf of French bread, some croissants, and a cinnamon roll the other day and they were all so good!!! They delivered them right to my door and everything was super fresh and yummy. I just feel bad that I didn't leave out the envelope with the tip sooner. The French bread is very good. Cheese bread is supposed to taste cheddary throughout. This cheese bread had a small plug of Velveeta in one spot through the bread. The rest was like regular bread, although good regular bread. The blueberry muffins were great, but not even close to Jordan Marsh like someone mentioned. I heard about this place from a few people, saw it on The Phantom Gourmet, and read the reviews here on Yelp before I went in. Maybe it was over-hyped, but I was not blown away. It was a Thursday afternoon at about 12:30 pm. There was only one woman behind the counter and there were no customers in the place. The woman was very nice. She answered my questions about the various breads and even made chit-chat with me, making feel like a regular customer even though it was my first time in the shop. I bought a loaf of sourdough and because everyone raved about it, I bought a cinnamon roll. First the good news - the sourdough is very good. Super fresh and tasty with the right amount of chew on the crust. I have had sourdoughs that have super hard crusts that hurt my jaw chewing them. This one was just right. Eating it fresh and also toasting it - a very nice bread. Now the not-as-good news - the cinnamon roll. Yes - it IS as big as a child's head and can easily feed 3 people. It was fresh and moderately tasty. But it was just okay. It was not this unbelievable thing that melted in my mouth and made me want to eat the entire roll in one sitting. If it were not for the generous amount of icing on the top and down the sides, the roll might have been a little dry. Again - it was good - not great. I am very happy that a small bread shop is open in Wakefield. And I want to go back and try some of the other breads. But I am only giving this place a three-star rating because the item that I was looking forward to trying, the cinnamon roll, was just average. read more

I was finally able to stop into this gem yesterday right before it closed for the night, and I am so happy I did! First of all, customer service is everything - and they seem to get that! The woman who took care of me was super nice - despite the fact that I was running in there literally 2 minutes before closing time. Friendly, happy to see me - things like make me come back even if I didn't love the product (which I do!). Anyway, I bought two loaves of sourdough asiago/pepper (as gifts for my mom & grandmother) and one plain whole wheat for me. I just had a slice of the wheat - lightly toasted with a little PB - and it was delicious! Perfectly crusted on the outside, soft on the inside. I haven't yet heard from my mother/grandmother about their sourdough loaves, but I'm sure they will love it just as much as I did! Drop in and give it a try - you won't be disappointed. The baked goods looked like they might be tasty, but we went on a recent afternoon for coffee/tea and a pastry. We found a pot of coffee that seemed to have been sitting a long while, no decaf, and no tea. (No tea? Is it that hard to stock a few tea bags?)
