I was at this bar tonight, at an almost sold out show by a production company, whom i work for. Also in attendance was a girl in a wheelchair. The promoters brought her down the stairs because the venue is not wheelchair accessible and well, there was barely any staff during load in. The venue didn't turn her away or put in their website that wheelchairs are not to be in the venue. The girl almost fell off her chair and it was a mess bringing her down. Either way, it was all fine and dandy.. until the end of the show. I see the friend of the girl in the wheelchair ask for help and nobody in the venue wanted to help. In the meantime, the promoters helped the person get in to the venue and almost got hurt.
The venue took no initiative and the staff was the most disrespectful and careless people except the security who explained that he can't help because of his bad back and the owner who said he will handle his staff and that he's sorry. One of bartenders was blatantly talking about how the girl in the wheelchair shouldn't be there and when I heard this I just watched people stand around and not say anything. I went up to a different bartender and told her how disrespectful and discriminative those remarks are. A person with a handicap is allowed to be at a fucking show. If the venue doesn't want to help or provide safety to their customers, they should state that in their website! When I confronted the other bartender making these remarks i got yelled at by her, the other blonde bartender, another dude, was told that I'm starting shit, and that I am not even a promoter and just the promoters friend.. the bartender also said "I dont care, she shouldn't be here".
It's funny, considering I've worked with Christina, Black Widow and Chord Productions since over 5 years.. once I let it go and started loading out the bands, (after I talked to the owner and he said that he will take care of it and handle his staff) I see one of the bartenders, going upstairs, saying loudly, WE ACCEPT EVERYONE HERE, i turn to the guy at the bar and say "real professional" and the guy tells me that I'm instigating and that she was talking about another incident... now I'm not one for drama or any of this bullshit but when I see these kind of people work at customer service, it makes me sick. I was told by friends to leave it alone but I am not sorry for standing up for basic human decency and rights! To the blonde bartender saying "I'm gonna fight" but didn't say a word to me after; you don't scare me or intimidate me.
And no, I didn't mind my business because that's what people do now, nobody sticks up to this kind of behaviour and it's truly saddening.
I will never go to the Brass Monkey ever again. read more
