I've lived and worked around Eustace, Texas for years, and I know most folks in this community…read more That's why it bothers me to speak up, but what I've seen over at The Roost just doesn't sit right. From what I've experienced, it seems like the place hires people who are already having a hard time finding work elsewhere. There's one waitress who, as I understand it, lost a previous job at a vet clinic after some issues with missing medication. These days, she'll sometimes show up with her own mix of what she calls a Bloody Mary--heavy on the vodka--and while she might offer it around, she mostly drinks it herself during her shift. She's married to a local police officer, and I've even seen him there in uniform helping bus tables. Another waitress is a local girl--friendly enough--but not very sharp, and she ends just about everything with a nervous little laugh that wears on you after a while. In the kitchen, things are worse. One of the cooks reportedly brings in liquor in the mornings, keeps it in the cooler by the register, and drinks from it throughout the day while working. I've also noticed basic cleanliness and food safety don't seem to be taken seriously. Hair shows up in food more often than it should, and when it's pointed out, it's sometimes just picked out by hand and tossed aside, no handwashing after. I've never personally seen staff washing their hands the way they should, and gloves and hairnets don't seem to be used. Food handling practices raise a lot of concerns--things like cheese and ingredients sitting out for hours, reused bowls without washing, and no clear labeling or dating on food. The equipment doesn't seem to be working right either. Freezers and refrigerators aren't holding proper temperatures, and instead of fixing them, it looks like staff are working around it with ice or just using the equipment anyway. I've heard of meat and seafood being served even when it didn't seem fresh. There are also bigger issues. The building doesn't appear to meet basic accessibility standards for folks with disabilities--parking, entrances, and restrooms included. Plumbing problems have reportedly backed up into the café area, and instead of shutting down to clean properly, the same mop used in the dining area was used to deal with it. Altogether, it paints a picture of a place that may not be taking health, safety, or basic standards seriously. I care about this town and the people in it, and I believe folks deserve to know what they might be walking into.

Our app came quickly but the drinks and food came so slowly. Also between us asking for waters while we look at the cocktail menu was a lot of elapsed time. Food: the steak frites were very salty (and I love salt) but definitely the best meal ordered. The "Mac attack" tasted cheeseless -- literally tasted like water. The chicken Alfredo was "mid" but also a super tiny portion. Both pastas looked like kids meals. I guess they were priced appropriately at least. Not pictured was the Donny burger -- described as "eh it was fine". All left more to be desired. We really wanted to try the cinnamon cake but decided against since service was sooooo slow. The peach tea was bad. The oasis marg was okay. When we asked for wine, we were told "I don't know what we have let me show you" and were shown the screen that listed: white, red, rose, and sparkling. The wine should be listed on the menu with the beer and the cocktails. I'd maybe come again to sit at the bar and have a drink or two if there's live music, but otherwise, this is skippable for a full meal service.

The restaurant is spacious with a casual, old-school diner atmosphere, although it was absolutely freezing inside. There was also some signage around the restaurant that felt a little random and odd. One thing worth knowing before visiting is that the restaurant has both a smoking and non-smoking side. To their credit, they actually do a relatively good job of keeping the cigarette smoke contained to the smoking section, and we really didn't notice much of it while sitting in the non-smoking area. The downside is that the restrooms are located all the way in the back of the smoking section, so you have to walk through that area to use them. That's especially not ideal when you're there with young kids. Food-wise, the salsa was extremely bland and had basically no flavor. But our biggest issue by far was the wait for our food. This was genuinely some of the slowest food service we've ever experienced. What made it even harder to understand was that there were very few other guests in the restaurant at the time, so the extremely long wait didn't seem justified by how busy they were. There were definitely a few bright spots! They brought my daughter an adorable Minnie Mouse pancake, which was such a cute touch and made her meal feel special. The food also looked good once it finally arrived, and the portions were decent. Unfortunately, a couple of our requests were missed as well. I specifically asked for grilled onions, but they came out barely grilled. I also asked for raw onions on the side, and those never came at all. Overall, the quick initial attention from our waitress and the adorable Minnie Mouse pancake were appreciated, but the extremely long and seemingly unexplained food wait, bland salsa, missed requests, freezing dining room, and having to walk through the smoking section to reach the restrooms made the experience disappointing. There are some things to like about Lakeside Cafe, and I can see the potential, but based on this visit, the kitchen timing and attention to food requests definitely need improvement.

She was attentive, kind, and always paying attention to whether we needed anything without hovering. We started with the appetizer sampler and chose the fried pickles, okra, and green beans. Everything came out hot, fresh, and lightly breaded, which I really appreciated. Nothing felt greasy or overly heavy. Also, the sweet tea was actually sweet and delicious, not that sad "dark water" tea you sometimes get other places. We split the chicken fried chicken sandwich and an order of 8 honey BBQ wings. Both came out at the same time, and honestly, we probably could have chosen just one because the portions were huge. For the price point, that was a big plus. Everything I saw on the menu looked reasonably priced and fair for today's economy, no price gouging. The chicken fried chicken was cooked perfectly. The breading was light, the outside was crispy, and the chicken was still juicy. The wings were fried naked and crispy before the sauce was added, which I loved. My only tiny nitpick would be that there was a little more sauce than I personally prefer. I would have liked the option to add more sauce if needed, since you can always add more but can't take it off once it's on. Overall, this was such a good experience. Great service, fresh food, big portions, fair prices, and a true local restaurant feel. I'm so glad we chose this place and will definitely be sending people this way!
