They were not that busy and had 4 girls on hand. Waited 45 minutes to be checked out, no apologies, very rude waitresses. Don't come here if you don't intend to stay. read more

The folks at the Mabank Cafe redirected the tone of the morning.... What a wonderful spirit, nice ol' small town feel.....Christian radio softly setting the vibe for the place and patrons... Food was just like i had hoped..... cause you never know ........ But, Dang good. Simple breakfast....but dang good !.... Ladies were attentive and kept the coffee cup full. We stopped around noon for catfish lunch special. This is a great deal and we love the onion rings here. We have had nothing but great service and kind and attentive staff. It is a cafe, not a 5 star dress code restaurant. For a cafe with nice atmosphere we like eating lunch here. I saw a review commenting on the fee for using a CC, and I understand, I do not like paying a fee either, but they are charged so pass it along. I suppose it may be good for a restaurant to increase prices by 5% to everyone then charge the same. I guess a restaurant could increase prices by 5%, then give those paying cash a discount. so no fee :) read more

Food was very good and service was good as well. I don't like businesses charging a fee when using a credit card. In this case the upcharge was 3.83 percent of the bill and I believe the fee was also applied to the tax! I will not eat here again or any other place that is charging this fee. I questioned the upcharge and the cashier told me it is happening everywhere and they don't have a choice! That is TOTAL BS, each business makes the decision to charge the transaction fee. I may not have as many choices on where to eat but I DO HAVE A CHOICE and will support the restaurants not applying the fee. If they need more money just increase the price on the menu. read more

Went there for the first time this morning. They were very busy. (They had a big group in the back) even though they were slammed the servers kept up. Our food was hot and very good. They even have a breakfast buffet. Our server was very sweet. Will definitely go back. read more

Poor poor everything. Poor service, poor coffee, poor food management. Got here at 12:45, an hour later not seeing our food or much of our waitress. Had to have a different one get us a refill and tell us our food would "be right out" 30 minutes ago. They ran out of cornbread and catfish early one (it takes 20 minutes to make more cornbread, hello). Hearing other people around us complain that they have never had to wait so long for their food before. The waitresses aren't wearing masks, not a single one, despite website saying people had to, and the coffee is so thin it is light brown, not dark. We walked out after the manager said our ticket had only shown it was put in 16 minutes ago. Waitress fail, believed by the manager. Okay, scratch it off the list... read more

It's a blessing to come home. Especially to a place that hasn't changed a bit - in the best ways. I walked in on Memorial Day weekend - ight as Texas was lessening restrictions. I heard there were very few cases in Van Zandt/Kaufman/Henderson Counties, so I decided to stop in. As I recalled when I used to frequent this place more than 8 years ago, this place was quiet as could be. It was "seat yourself," and the tables were quite spread out. I noticed white poster board on the wall, and was told that was the "touch-free menu." On another wall was another, and it had breakfast foods. Fortunately, at 2PM on a Saturday, they had both. I noticed a man and his wife staring at me, but went on my way about my business. Browsing, and eventually ordering biscuits and gravy (no meat) and hash browns. The waitress served me very casually. No suggestions or comments. That was okay though. Despite the menu being written on poster board written in Sharpie, I recognized every item. I waited but a short time, looking at the Mabank Football paraphernalia and goofy signs. It was nice. I felt like I was indeed home. The food arrived and it was exactly as I remember. The place has always had dodgy hours, strange peaks and a menu that never changes, but go in and you will get a piece of Mabank's small town, slow living charm. As I went to pay, the man that was looking at me went to the register. It was the owner, Victor I soon realized. "You're that guy, right? The one who worked at Vetoni's? I heard you moved away. I wondered where and how you were. Good to see you!" It meant a lot, amid the chaos and strange times, to come back home to a place and time, seemingly untouched. read more

Wife and I were looking for a Sunday breakfast spot serving traditional southern feasts with a smile. We think we found our leading candidate. The building is nondescript. And the interior is bright and simple. Our waitress was very nice but clearly does not believe in masks. Service was slowish but we were not in a hurry and the staff were super friendly. Breakfast is not the hardest meal to prepare but still surprisingly few get it right. Our eggs were cooked to our specifications side dishes were all good. But as i write this several weeks later, I cannot for the life of me remember what either of us ordered. Either it wasn't memorable or was memorable for being decent food at great prices. I know we will be back and next time so let's agree the former is a more accurate opinion. I know not to wait so long to write a review. read more

Mabank Cafe use to be a great place with great food and service. Key there is "used to be." My wife and I went there almost a year ago and it wasn't good but I figured a year later, maybe it had improved. I was wrong. Server gave us two orange juices and two waters as we ordered. No straws. I asked for straws and only got two instead of four. The food is sub-par. I ordered biscuits and gravy to go for my father who has cancer and can't easily leave the house. I got the ticket and there was an extra dollar fee. I asked the server what it was for and was told it's for the to go container. I've never been to a restaurant that charged for a to go container. I've managed restaurants, my wife has managed restaurants, my dad owned a restaurant. Again, never heard of being charged for a to go container. Her excuse was that the cost of styrofoam went up. Sam's has 125 containers for $17, so try again in that one. To make matters worse, we live less than a half mile from the restaurant and when we got home the biscuits were already hard as rocks. The good people of Mabank deserve better service and food. We got better service when the post office was in that building. read more

The food is awesome and staff is on key but I have to share one big downfall. They let people in their that put church stuff all over the table and they interrupt your meal to ask for donations. I'm cool with God is good but not while I'm with my family trying to enjoy a night out. This guy actually went into detail on how they take in drug users / prostitution ..... I'm like dude, we have kids at the table and this not the place.. If the owners read this please know I'll probably come back for the homecoming but if another one of your holy rollers interrupts my meal I'm gonna definitely not return again. Thanks , A. The celling needs replaced and you don't want to take someone there for a special celebration or meeting. It is just an old home place. When we moved to Gun Barrel City, we tried every restaurant we could find. This place was just OK. Nothing special and everyone was staring at my husband & made him feel very uncomfortable (he has a beard and kinda looks ethnic). I think there's smoking allowed too, if I'm not mistaken. Pretty gross. The place felt ANCIENT, like it hadn't been updated since it opened. Like most places out here, they don't have fresh real food, just mostly fried or from a can. VERY hard to eat healthy in Mabank/GBC. Not for young people who may look different than your average east Texan. read more

I can't believe this is the first review of the Mabank Cafe -- where has everybody been?!? This place is special to my wife and me for a specific reason: after leaving Texas for a couple absolutely miserable years in Wheeling, WV (don't ask, it was horrible), we finally returned, and on the day we were to take possession of our just-bought lakefront home, we arrived a little early, so we stopped for breakfast at the first place we saw after exiting US 175 -- the Mabank Cafe. This is a locally-owned, family friendly place that serves some of the best southern home cooking you will ever find, and that is saying a lot out here in small-town Texas. We tend to visit for breakfast but the whole menu is a wonderful collection of culinary Americana. The Mabank Cafe is also a favorite with locals. There is absolutely nothing fancy about the place -- linoleum flooring, Texas dance hall-style corrugated steel covering the lower half of cinderblock walls, a suspended ceiling that has seen better days, and a collection of fading B&W photos of old-time Mabank that would be a lot more interesting if they each had some caption underneath them to explain what we're looking at. But the home cooking is great, prepared from scratch by experienced hands using fresh ingredients. My fav is the "Wild Pig" -- an omelet with ham, bacon AND sausage. Can you say cholesterol? I knew you could. If you're from the Cedar Creek Lake area you probably already know the Mabank Cafe, but if you travel US 175 between Dallas and Athens, exit TX 198 for a change and check them out, they're only a minute south of the highway. read more

We stopped for lunch today and ordered the lunch special which was chicken fried steak with sides. The meat was so tough and full of gristle that it was not edible. We notified management of the issue and were told nothing would be done. We have eaten breakfast at this little café previously without problems. After today, never again. McDonalds is a more viable option. If you want slow service, a long wait for your food, horrible meat quality, and unresponsive employees and/or ownership, this is your place. This is a great hometown restaurant with a wide variety on their menu. I cant speak for any meal other than breakfast, but it's good. We've been a few times. Today me and my 9 year old went. She had the breakfast buffet and Inhad breakfast burritos. Mine was great! She seemed to enjoy hers for the most part but was disappointed by the pancakes. She got one with some eggs, sausage, and a biscuit. She ate everything leaving the pancake for last. When she tried to eat it, it was hard. I told her to get another one thinking it was because it had gotten cold. It was hard too. I couldnt cut through it. Overall, I recommend this place. I would just recommend ordering pancakes off the menu if that's really what you want. read more
