It's a small space, and I can't imagine there being space for more than 25-30 diners (or even less), and each table as relatively small in size (more on this later). First, the good part. The food remains the main attraction, and ingredients across the board tasted consistently fresh. Whether it was the HAZELNUT RISOTTO, the ROASTED COURGETTES/ZUCCHINI, the BEETS, or the TOMATO SOUP, I found they were prepared to a high standard. The dishes are meant to be sharing plates, but this can cause some table real estate problems (also, more on this later). But now, the not-so-good part, the comparatively poorer service, especially when compared to similarly-priced restaurants (e.g., Sotto Sotto), or even less (e.g., Sally Lunn, Yak Yeti Yak, etc.), and then the gall to charge a higher service percentage of 12.5%. For example, my group of 5 experienced both the problems of servers removing plates prematurely (when there was clearly uneaten food), but also not removing plates UNLESS requested to do so, despite finished plates being stacked to make room for new dishes. Similarly, beyond the initial ordering of water and drinks, staff didn't follow up on this, and we had to request new water jugs throughout the meal. Finally, although staff atitudes weren't negative per se, they did seem somewhat indifferent/detached. All these points may seem nit-picky, but I think it's not unreasonable to expect better service at these prices. Ultimately, Oak comes up on many recommended restaurant lists, but after this experience, although I'd still recommend it, I wouldn't be too upset if you can't manage to get a reso here given so many other great alternatives.

Keeping to our healthy January we opted for salad. You have to pop up to the counter to order and it's cash only which we didn't realise luckily there was a cash machine close by. New to my husband, who grew up in the town, we ventured in for some brunch. Technically breakfast, which was the menu available to us pre midday. But it could double as a brunch menu too. I had the Eggs Benedict and my husband the big breakfast. The eggs were poached perfectly and the accompanying bread, hollandaise and ham top notch. Really good. My husbands big breakfast was just that. Big! I sampled some of the hash brown and black pudding. Both were excellent, the best black pudding I've had outside Ireland. The staff were very prompt and courteous. We'll definitely be returning when we are back on future visits.

It's a standard NT cafe, with the emphasis on cakes, scones, etc. (They apparently also do proper meals but these were not available when we visited as it was mid-afternoon). We had a scone (with clotted cram and jam) and a slice of orange and poppy seed cake, with a pot of tea each. I tried the cake as it was an unusual flavour, and it was delicious. My partner's scone was nice but the (pre-packed) clotted cream was crumbly rather than smooth. (In hindsight we should have asked for another portion). We found the staff to be very friendly and helpful. The interior is a little rustic (wooden furniture, stone floors): fine if you are walking and having an outdoorsy sort of day. The menu has dishes ranging from 6-12 pounds, with an option for everyone. We tried multiple dishes during our visit ( a mistake because the portions are generous) and all were delicious. Each of the dishes we tried was full of flavor and had that homemade feeling. The one downside we experienced is that the food did take a while to be ready, but aside from that if you are in the Bath area, The Green Rocket Cafe is an excellent choice. My Criteria 5 stars: The best food I have ever had, or an excellent option given the price. 4 stars: Good food, a restaurant I look forward to trying again. 3 stars: Good food, a restaurant that I am indifferent to. 2 stars: Below average experience, will not go again. 1 stars: This restaurant should be closed.
