The veggie burger appeared and tasted like real beef. It's offered as a single or double where you can choose from different condiments such as garlic mayo, mango chutney, burger relish, curried mayo, chili sauce, or your standard mustard. It comes with a generous serving of chips (fries). For a veggie burger, it is surprisingly filling. This place made such an impression on Ryan S. and I that we came back a second time. I couldn't do another veggie burger but ordered the Greek Salad. Prices are a little higher than other places but they serve pretty big portions. Beers are solid. Have a seat out in the backyard if the weather is warm.

After already having two successful restaurants in Manchester, I was very excited about visiting Bistro 1847 after hearing only good things about it. Set in the beautiful Great Western Arcade, I thought it was strange to open a restaurant here. Especially after 6pm it is the only place open usually! But the atmosphere of the restaurant complements the peacefulness of the arcade. The interior of the Bistro is minimalistic and modern. Being someone who is allergic to Dairy and Wheat intolerant (I know!), Bistro 1847 is one of few places I don't feel weird at. The whole menu is Vegetarian, with dishes that can be adjusted to vegan or gluten free or both in my view. My and my friend were feeling fat so we both went for three courses. I had the curried Swede Cauliflower, Cashew nut butter and cinnamon cornflakes. So many flavours going on in a small parcel was a great choice. For the main I had "Oh I do like to be beside the seaside" (all dishes have these quirky little names!) which is a modern Veggie twist on fish and chips in case you hadn't guessed! I had the vegan version which had two huge pieces of smoked tofu which I really struggled to finish along with the chunky chips! I wasn't defeated and enjoyed all parts of the meal. For desert I had the "Good ol fashioned lover boy" I enjoyed it although I thought maybe the chocolate was a bit over powering as was so much going on. But the jelly was a nice compliment to the richness. The menu contains a large selection of cocktails and deserts for sharing if you and your friends are in search of lots of sweetness. This was my third visit on a Sunday since opening and has been progressively busier each time which is great to see. Bistro 1847 is a very relaxing experience and ideal place for a date or a catch up with a friend. And of course the food is amazing!

Oo-ee this is indeed a very classy vegetarian restaurant…read more The decor is modern, simple and stylish - shades of white and grey, nice white table linen, with a few tables downstairs, and more upstairs on the mezzanine level. There's a large window looking on to the arcade, which is great for watching people come and go. The food was fantastic. It's a fixed price menu, at £19 for two courses, and £25 for three. There's also a pricier tasting menu - the couple sitting next to me had chosen that option, and were really enjoying it. To start, I had the puy lentils, with roasted carrot, spring onions and garlic tofu. The tofu was done as a silky sauce - I'd never had tofu prepared in that way, and I thought it was really delicious. For main course, I chose the bell pepper ragu, with polenta. Again this was superb, with the polenta served as crisp little triangles on top. Both my courses were gluten free, as well as vegan, and their menu is very clear to understand. It feels like the sort of place you can completely trust to get things right. Service was quick and friendly, and there was a nice atmosphere, with other diners just quietly enjoying their meals just as much as I was. I'll definitely be back here next time in Birmingham, and I'll look out for their restaurants in other cities too.

BOTTOM LINE: Although the food was great, the service left a bit of a bad aftertaste…read more Located next to the infamous Sally Lunn's, Oak (previously known as Acorn - get it?! - and still listed as such on Yelp) is located in the core area of Bath. It's a small space, and I can't imagine there being space for more than 25-30 diners (or even less), and each table as relatively small in size (more on this later). First, the good part. The food remains the main attraction, and ingredients across the board tasted consistently fresh. Whether it was the HAZELNUT RISOTTO, the ROASTED COURGETTES/ZUCCHINI, the BEETS, or the TOMATO SOUP, I found they were prepared to a high standard. The dishes are meant to be sharing plates, but this can cause some table real estate problems (also, more on this later). But now, the not-so-good part, the comparatively poorer service, especially when compared to similarly-priced restaurants (e.g., Sotto Sotto), or even less (e.g., Sally Lunn, Yak Yeti Yak, etc.), and then the gall to charge a higher service percentage of 12.5%. For example, my group of 5 experienced both the problems of servers removing plates prematurely (when there was clearly uneaten food), but also not removing plates UNLESS requested to do so, despite finished plates being stacked to make room for new dishes. Similarly, beyond the initial ordering of water and drinks, staff didn't follow up on this, and we had to request new water jugs throughout the meal. Finally, although staff atitudes weren't negative per se, they did seem somewhat indifferent/detached. All these points may seem nit-picky, but I think it's not unreasonable to expect better service at these prices. Ultimately, Oak comes up on many recommended restaurant lists, but after this experience, although I'd still recommend it, I wouldn't be too upset if you can't manage to get a reso here given so many other great alternatives.

Absolutely scrumptious vegetarian and vegan dishes that leave you feeling refreshed and satiated!…read moreAs a tapas style, the small plates are well-priced with the recommendation of ordering 2-3 per person and sharing amongst everybody. Note that the restaurant has rebranded to OAK Restaurant with a new website, but still has the same address and contact information. The menu is quite short with only a dozen choices or so, but each dish has the finest quality of ingredients and refined yet light taste. We ordered all the dishes recommended to us by the server and loved each one: - Nocellara olives (£4.75) - Beetroot tartare, smoked almond cream (£8.95) - Heritage tomato panzanella (£8.50) - Black pepper chickpeas, smoked cashew butter, summer greens (£9.45) - Jersey curd agnolotti, hazelnuts, spinach and butter emulsion (£10.75) Dessert was delicious as well: - Stewed plums, brandy ice cream, almond crumb (£8.25) - Dark chocolate and salted caramel tart, mint ice cream (£8.25) The restaurant was not that busy with only a couple other tables filling in after coming in for our Tuesday noon reservation. We were seated at a corner booth next to a window on the ground floor, which had a relaxing breeze coming through. The cost of five open jars of sparkling water was £3. A 12.50% service charge was added onto the bill.

Even though it was a wet day (or maybe because of it) it was very busy. It's a standard NT cafe, with the emphasis on cakes, scones, etc. (They apparently also do proper meals but these were not available when we visited as it was mid-afternoon). We had a scone (with clotted cram and jam) and a slice of orange and poppy seed cake, with a pot of tea each. I tried the cake as it was an unusual flavour, and it was delicious. My partner's scone was nice but the (pre-packed) clotted cream was crumbly rather than smooth. (In hindsight we should have asked for another portion). We found the staff to be very friendly and helpful. The interior is a little rustic (wooden furniture, stone floors): fine if you are walking and having an outdoorsy sort of day. There is also seating upstairs which has views over part of Avebury Stone Circle.

As you would expect they are focussed on fair trade, organic food, coffees, teas and seasonal dishes so five green stars. We only got there late on a Sunday afternoon just about an hour before closing so there wasn't much left to eat. They had afternoon teas (scones/clotted cream/jam) but we'd consumed a lot if this English treat in recent weeks so we settled on great cappuccinos, sparking water and tubs of delicious ice cream from a local organic farm - I had ginger and my wife had mint choc chip and they were wonderful tasting. The scones did look lovely though. It was a really hot afternoon so we sat outdoors at one of their large shaded tables and enjoyed our fare. Again really worth supporting as there nowt coming from a crooked Westminster government who know the price of everything but the value of nothing abd know how to claim eye watering sums in 'expenses'. It these dishonest crooks could flog this place circa cut to a private operator based in the Cayman's it would be gone in a heart beat, as so much already has.
