There weren't a ton of dinner options in town, so we decided to give it a try with our children. The service was excellent throughout our visit. Jessica and Elle both waited on our table, and they were prompt, attentive, and very polite. We started with the Bavarian pretzel for the kids, which came with cheese. It was pretty standard as far as pretzels go - not anything amazing, but certainly not bad either. Two of our children ordered the Koegel Vienna Hot Dogs with French fries, and our third ordered a children's portion of chicken tenders and fries. There isn't a traditional children's menu, but the staff explained that they can make smaller portions for kids, such as two chicken strips instead of four. My husband ordered the special, a Chicken Cordon Bleu Sandwich with French fries, and I ordered the Pecan Chicken Salad with the dressing on the side. Jessica recommended getting a side of ranch as well in case the raspberry dressing was too sweet for me, which turned out to be a great suggestion. The kids' hot dogs were surprisingly good and definitely better than the standard ballpark-style hot dog we were expecting. The chicken tenders were pretty standard frozen tenders, and the fries were good but nothing particularly unique. My husband really enjoyed his Chicken Cordon Bleu Sandwich. It tasted freshly made, and he said he would absolutely order it again. My Pecan Chicken Salad was the highlight of the meal for me - it was amazing! I had actually been craving a salad, which is unusual for me since I normally prefer a hot dinner, and this completely hit the spot. The raspberry dressing was delicious and sweet, while the ranch Jessica suggested made the salad a little more savory. I genuinely couldn't decide which I liked better and ended up mixing the two dressings together by the end of the meal! The restaurant itself could certainly use some updating, but everything was clean, the food came out quickly, the prices were reasonable, and the atmosphere was casual and relaxing. Most importantly, the staff was friendly and attentive. Overall, we had a good experience and would return if we were in Harbor Beach again. We'd recommend Smalley's to anyone looking for a casual, reasonably priced meal with good service.

I must mention this, because it is important: they do not use Canola Oil for frying, as *most* restaurants do these days because it's cheaper than corn or soy. Eating anything fried in canola makes me violently sick after (3-4 hours of eating.) I wonder if IBS and other ailments of the like might possibly be what I experience? Fyi. It has a charming, cozy feel and was definitely a cute spot to stop while we were in town. We were seated right away by our server, Lily. She was polite and informative about the menu, although when we asked for recommendations, she unfortunately didn't have anything specific to suggest and mostly just told us that everything was good. We were originally seated in a booth to the right of the entrance, but once we placed our order, we asked if we could move. Freezing cold air was blowing directly onto the table at full blast, and after sitting there for a while, we just couldn't take it anymore. Once we moved to another table, it was MUCH more comfortable! Our children ordered a bagel with cream cheese, chocolate chip pancakes, regular pancakes, sausage, and fruit. They don't have a traditional children's menu, but we found out that you can order a child-sized portion of pancakes, which is one pancake instead of a full order. This worked perfectly for our youngest. I ordered the Monte Cristo crepe with a side of hash browns, and my husband ordered the Eggs Benedict. Our youngest child's pancake was initially forgotten, but once we mentioned it, they were able to make it quickly and get it to the table. The food itself was good, and we really didn't have any complaints about what we ordered. Unfortunately, the service after our food arrived was where our experience started to fall short. Our waitress didn't return to our table for quite a while, and we eventually had to flag down other staff members to get syrup, ketchup, and hot sauce that we had requested but never received. At the end of our meal, we asked for a carryout box and our bill, but unfortunately seemed to be forgotten again. After waiting around 15 minutes, I was getting up to take the kids outside because they were understandably losing their ability to sit still. Our waitress made eye contact with us, seemed to realize we were still waiting, and quickly brought the bill over. Thankfully, we were able to get out pretty quickly after that. Overall, the food was good and the restaurant itself was adorable, but the service could have been much more attentive, especially considering it wasn't very busy that morning. That booth directly under the air vent also definitely needs to be addressed--BURRRR! The food itself isn't the reason for the drop in stars. Our rating is based more on the lack of attentive service and the uncomfortable temperature at our original table. Hopefully those are things that can be addressed in the future, because eighteen87 is a cute breakfast spot with good food and a lot of potential.
