The Bookworm is one of my favorite used bookstores in Colorado. They always have what I'm looking for. And are so helpful in helping me find it. I could browse titles in her all day. The books are nicely organized. They have a pretty large children's section too. I come here often, and always leave with more than I initially came for. This is a large and well-organized used-book store, whose stock is primarily general fiction but also has a lot of science fiction. There are separate areas for mystery and fantasy. They carry a wide variety of non-fiction (divided into numerous subject areas), althogh the number of volumes in each area is relatively small. They also have some specialty areas near the cash register, such as classics and complete set of the Brittanica Great Books. There is a tiny cafe in the front of the store, but I did not try this. Prices were reasonable. I thought the lighting was a little dim, although it was bright enough to see everything clearly. read more

i love this bookstore, books are about half off of original price of a new book. the variety and magnitude of books they have is incredible and staff is friendly. unfortunately my experience was ruined after being harassed by a regular lady i see everytime i come here. i'm not sure if she's associated with the owners of the store or just an angry customer, but today she went out of her way to come up to my car, prevent me from leaving, and then bag on my car windows. it scared me so bad i was shaking and im worried about it happening again if i return. i did call the bookstore and let them know what happened so hopefully it's being handled but just be cautious. read more

I have to check myself every time I visit the Bookworm because I could easily spend $100 per visit. I've never visited the cafe because I'm always so obsessed with looking at and looking for books - this place is a book-lover's dream. Tip: If you're going to trade in used books for credit, keep your expectations low. As they should be, the Bookworm is picky about which titles they take. They are happy to donate what they don't accept. (Example, I brought in two large crates of books, mostly hardbacks, anticipating a huge credit and I only got $8, which of course I spent immediately!) I did see a woman pitch a mini-fit about them not accepting the one book (published in 1965) she wanted to trade, and one of the shopkeepers opted to work with her, which was nice/accommodating. If you're a bibliophile, you'll probably enjoy this space. Lots of esoteric sections to browse (it's Boulder, so heavy on spirituality titles and such). Just lock down your wallet. I absolutely loved this place. As a midwesterner sometimes Boulder throws me off, when I'm in the area, because people aren't friendly by default. The Bookworm is super welcoming, and unpretentious. I had very specific questions about books I was looking for and they were incredibly helpful and knowledgable about all of them. I haven't tried trading in any books (just a visitor, sorry!) but I appreciated the large used cookbook section particularly. The Bookworm is my favorite used bookstore in Boulder. It has a great selection of books, particularly fiction and mysteries. The store is quite large and well organized. The staff is always helpful. They buy books for store credit, and they're fussy about what they select. They know their market, so they accept books only by authors that are popular with their clientele, and the books have to be in at least 'good' condition. Thus it's easy to find books you'll like that are in good or better condition. I recommend The Bookworm highly! read more

We are here visiting, and used Yelp to help us find a used bookstore. We found a gem! Very large selection, numerous subjects and very helpful staff. I look for quirky cookbooks. The kind that are put together by small groups; schools, social clubs, etc. They didn't have that type when we visited. Other cookbooks were varied and good choices. Coffee sold there too. Really nice used bookstore in Boulder that has stacks and stacks of books new and old. It is off 28th in the back of a little strip mall and you could miss it if you didn't know what you were looking for. Don't mistake the little storefront as being a small store - it is surprisingly large inside with every category book under the sun. From a to z you will be sure to find something in here. It seems pretty organized and they have a well stocked shelves. Its a nice used book store! If you are looking for older items that are out of print, you may luck out. I love The Bookworm. I have made it a point to visit used book stores anywhere I can find them, and I frequent the stores in Boulder on a regular basis. The Bookworm is my favorite. Although it looks quite small on the outside, the inside is much larger and crammed with books. They have a huge fiction section which I always spend lots of time in, but they also have a nice selection of almost every genre available. If you are looking for new and popular releases but can't find them in the general genre sections, be sure to find the shelf located next to the South entrance. Any new release hardcover as well as any high demand releases will likely be located on that shelf. I do love The Bookworm. Don't be fooled by the small storefront(s), the store is huge on the inside, with wall to wall books - but nothing that you can't reach without a small stepstool. There's a large kids section in the back, they also have a small comic book/graphic novel section near the front. The organizational layout of the store seems pretty haphazard - if you're looking for something specific, or a specific section, and can't find it, it's best to ask. They also separate the mass market sized paperbacks from the different sized novels - if you can't find something in the main stacks, it may be somewhere in the middle. Again, ask. As an avid scifi reader, their section is one of the best. However, since scifi can often bleed over into horror, mystery, and regular fiction, sometimes what you're looking for will be filed somewhere else. Again: ask! The staff seems standoffish, but mostly, they're really busy. They're really quite eager to help. Trading in your own books is also easy - just head up to the register and let them know that you'd like them to take a look. Like most used bookstores, the tradein rate is better for store credit than it is for cash, but if you're there as often as I am, that's fine. read more

Pros: they have used books. they have a LOT of used books. The staff knows books. They have a lot of the popular books available. The Bookwork is a good used bookstore, filled to the brim with lots of old stuff as well as some current stuff. It's the kind of place I could wander for hours if I had the time. If you want to lose yourself in the stacks -- this is the place to go. Great selection, good prices. The employees are somewhere between bitter and neutral about their jobs. This is a shame because they REALLY know the stock and can answer questions about this series or that series with ease. And when it comes to the trade-in policy, the problem is not that they are picky -- and they should be -- but that a couple of the women always manage communicate that they are doing you a huge favor by looking through the books you bring in. I guess they are a part of a long tradition of bookstore people who seem unhappy to be working in a bookstore. BUT this is a real bookstore. A big, wonderful all-purpose, all-genre, bookstore filled with best-selling and oddball books. This alone should be celebrated! read more

I walked in expecting a little bitty shop, based on its outside appearance. I first saw the cafe, and was surprised that they'd dedicate so much room to food. As my eyes adjusted to the indoor light I realized that the store went so far back that I couldn't SEE the far wall. I wandered back, a bit dazed and overwhelmed, and then discovered that it not only went back, but then it turned left, and lo and behold, ANOTHER entrance! The check out counter was by this entrance. There was a ton of fiction, with lots of duplicates. I don't think I can randomly browse for something interesting to catch my eye the way I do at some of the local thrift shops. (the prices are a lot higher, too, so it's unlikely I'll be grabbing some quick reads here.) Future visits will involve me with a list of titles and subjects to search for. I did have a specific topic in mind, journals and letters of old West pioneers. It took a while to track down the right section, but I found it and walked out with two promising titles. They offer store credit for trade ins, but no cash. It doesn't really matter to me because I'm a book hoarder. Rarely will a book leave my possession now that I have the room to store it! read more

So, everywhere we have lived (Oregon, New Mexico) we always search for a good used book store. Well, we found one in Boulder at bookworm. Our kids love it-they will sit on the floor for hours and read. Whenever we have a major spring clean, we take a couple boxes of books to bookworm for trade in. As other people have said, they are particular as to what they will take, but I understand this AND they will donate what they don't take. Overall MUCH better option than buying new and a lot cheaper. I can also incorporate errands, swim lessons, grocery shopping and bookworm into one afternoon. :) read more

I've been shopping here since it was a musty, twisty, winding place heading through several rooms located behind neighboring storefronts beyond the main room in the funky little plaza or micro-mall where the driver's license place and the best watch repairman in Boulder are. There were even books in the restroom- I loved that room even though I doubt I ever found anything I wanted in there. When they moved Cathy had taken over, her sons were no longer in Exer-Saucers by her side and the store moved further away from musty and became more predictable; fine with me since I buy a lot more now. Actually, "buy" is a misnomer since I rarely spend cash there. Sure, they don't take everything brought in but they know their market, they tend to not take hardcover fiction (and probably other genre) and the condition of books matters a lot more than it does in for many used bookstores. The price is generally 1/2 list price and 1/4 list can be expected as credit. If the book has passed through their system they will take it back for 1/2 that-Somehow they seem to have an amazing ability to recognize their writing although it does help to go through your books and make sure they didn't miss anything. (A recycler picks up books at the end of the day so it's possible to leave what you don't want- I sometimes keep what I know they'll take later.) I'm not sure how they price rare books. I met a hoarder who fretted they wouldn't give her a fair price but I challenge her to find a better price on her run of the mill "collection". They're always busy but have time to be friendly and helpful- I suppose to make coffee as well; the coffee bar isn't stocked full time but customers can order at the front. There's a smattering of new materials that require cash but not a ridiculous amount. Seating is fairly minimal but functional-recently they lost the most comfortable chair to "an accident" but neither Cathy nor I wanted to discuss details. If you're looking for a specific book they will tell you over the phone if they have it but won't hold it, at least I think they won't. I can't imagine not having the Bookworm around and utilizing it fully. Although there are others in Boulder County this is the one I think of first. Yes, I hear there are some that take more but I am satisfied with them, considering the selection, the ease of trading there, parking, other businesses in walking distance and the general feeling of shopping there. read more

I live East of town and always look forward to my trips to Boulder if they include a trip to the Book Worm! We have found such treasures there and the kids easily want to stay for an hour. My father in law is in an assisted living situation and we also find great new DVD's for him that are in great shape. read more

Wow this is one of the best used book stores I've been to! It is massive and you can get lost browsing in there for a long while. I ended up going in there to find one particular book, and they actually had it! They also have a trade-in for credit program. I only wish their location was a little better since it's just in a shopping center. Wow, this place is huge! Lots and lots of the vintage-y paperbacks I crave - genre fiction from the '60s to the '80s. Little cafe in back (or front, depending which entrance you use) too. I found a nice stack of titles I'd been looking for for awhile - mystery, horror (shelved in general fiction), and SF - so I was quite happy with the Bookworm. Altho' like many used bookstores, you can hear some clerks talking LOUDLY over all the bookshelves. Not a big deal, but can be distracting if you're trying to have a quiet, relaxing browse. If you are considering patronizing this store, I would urge you to reconsider and take your business to an honest book-seller in Longmont or Denver. The owners and staff at used bookstores tend to have a well-deserved reputation for being curmudgeonly and stand-offish. The Bookworm is the exception that proves the rule. Always welcoming, always helpful. I have bought and traded many times, and every visit has been pleasant. Their prices are good, and the amounts they offer for trade-in credit are fair. They have a decent selection of used books, however, when I went to pay for the set of two antique books I found they refused to honor their price after hearing me say it was a good deal. One of the employees went over to the computer and was googling the set and after checking eBay refused to sell them to me and said the price was too low. I will never step foot in the store again and am curious how they have stayed in business for so long if that is how they treat customers. read more

This is a fun, welcoming and very useful place. The staff are super helpful, and keep your account going over years. (I had been abroad and went back a couple years later to find I still had a store credit in their records.)
